This shows an in-game round of Halo 2's unranked "Rumble Pit" public matchmaking. We hope to get Halo 2 completed ASAP, and welcome you all onto the service soon!
Think about it: This is technically the first halo 2 original xbox live video since 2010. That is crazy to see.

@@CrAzYpotpie It's a hard one. It's not but it replicates the entire service (for games currently supported) with all features back, so in a sense it is 'Xbox Live' as that's what your console/games see . But just not made by Microsoft.

The first unofficial Xbox Live Halo 2 match since May 2010. It's been almost 14 years...
Insignia seriously needs more public attention, reviving the Original Xbox Live servers was only theorised in forums back in the day. To see it actually happening is something else entirely.

When a Halo game from 2004 has a better UI than the most recent Halo game. Bungie was truly something special
It has a better UI than most games, period. The menu was better than all future Halo titles, as well, as all of those would juggle between in game menu and Xbox dashboard functionality, which created unnecessary lag and looked ugly as sin.
The UI in this game is a masterpiece. Bungie was so ahead of their time, and seeing it all functioning again is making me legit emotional. Congrats to the Insignia team - this is unbelievable work.
Agreed. I was kinda disappointed when they got rid of it in Halo 3.

It’s like a dream come true. It may not be fully done yet, but we are getting really close to play one of the best games on Xbox Live with Insignia.

Important note: many testers and some devs were online testing for many hours before I hopped on and recorded this. They just didnt get much footage.

@@CrAzYpotpie too little? It's a massive undertaking reverse engineering everything! 5 years just about now. Too late? Perhaps, but the last undertaking of rebuilding everything had a cease and desist issued in 2016/2017 by Microsoft, and that was only when the Xbox Live dashboard was able to be accessed, with no games.
But to be fair, it was called "Project Xbox" so the name alone brought their attention.

When I first got my original Xbox years ago, Halo 2 came with it and it was still in the disc tray from who had it before. Never knew about online at all at the time. I'm so glad this is going to come back, not just this game but online on the original Xbox again. I'm really glad for your team, thanks for making all of this even possible!

Any chance of this eventually working on the 360?
Very very very slim chance. A good portion of the Xbox 360's version of Xbox Live would need to be reverse engineered and implemented due to how Microsoft designed the backwards compatibility system. It would also require a modded Xbox 360. While this is technically possible, it's not something the Insignia devs are interested in tackling at the moment. Never say never though.
In contrast, the original Xbox just needs a one-time exploit to dump your Xbox's unique keys and "register" them with the Insignia server.
It's time to bring out the Xbox Communicators, because HALO 2 IS BACK BABY!

Does Insigna support servers in Australia? Or will I be forced to play US servers?
Matches are peer to peer - the game should prioritise closer players, but if you're the only AUS person searching when matchmaking, you'll likely be put into a US room.

Will Halo 2 have any inherent latency advantages over Insignia as opposed to lan tunnelling services like XLink Kai? I know some games handle their LAN code and their actual Internet code differently.
I believe so, as system link really was meant for just about zero ping whereas Xbox Live implementation of networking was meant to compensate for possible lag.
It's looking smooth so far here! And the lobby in the video has players from across the world running flawlessly.
Halo 2 over xbox live has an actual netcode that was made for online play. Xlink kai is just… not that lol
