- The use of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) technology is a driving force in the development of particle accelerators. Scientists from around the globe are working together to develop the newest materials and techniques to improve the quality and efficiency of the SRF cavities that are essential for this technology.

Thanks. Nice to hear what's happening at Fermi. I worked at Michigan State back in the early 70's when we projected frame by frame photographs in a dark room and plotted the decay. The dark ages.
Where's ma man Don Lincoln?

thank you for the beautiful videos, Doug
wow thank you for sharing! I loved seeing the manufacturing processes.
fermi lab is awesome! 3:23 that vacuum chamber for coating was massive.
This was Breathtaking......
Bravissima Martina!!!
great work!
Fermilab, do you offer internships or student programmes for 4th year students (i.e. 1 year left of MSc programme) in theoretical/applied physics?
Could you imagine what a nightmare it'd be to troubleshoot at this facility

Or even just to know the name of the part. The "long bumpy thing that looks like a worm frozen in mid gallop" is broken.
I live for that kind of stuff.
Will this device be used in the Muon experiments?
Why niobium? Why not any other superconducting material? Does it have something to do with the actual mechanical properties of niobium in addition to its superconductivity?
If this is more efficient, can it make antimatter more economically?
Those cavities have standing RF-waves in them, right? that would mean their geometry must be very precise. How is this precision ensured when it is electropolished on site?
At least the fancy spoke cavities at ESS are dynamically tuned with motors and piezo-actuators.
Can someone explain the difference between a particle interacting with a electromagnetic field vs a photon intermediary? Can you have an electro magnetic field where a force on a particle occurs but with no intermediate photon?
In this video, first time I saw Prof. Hasan padmsee. Before that I only read their book and papers and I am a big fan of his.
I am work solid state mega watt.
Thanks,
my man Don
I heard room temperature super conductor materials were recently developed? I worked on RHIC and AGS at BNL. Liquid helium refrigeration system was very expensive and complex to maintain. Is this true ?
Nope. We got a ways to go before RTSC's are a reality.
I had a very difficult time understanding Dr. Martina Martinello. Is it just me, or her accent? My apologies, I'm here to learn, I don't mean to criticize.
New frontiers.
A 'Surrealistically Unbelievable Reaction Filter' would be 'SURF' Technology.
How are high-energy particles accelerated to superluminal velocities, and how are their speeds measured?
Millions of higgs boson? 😳
Who else checked their mail at 3:33 and 3:41, lol?
I want to see what a cavity failure looks like 😁
Man this is so important, I forgot about most of the world starving.

1:14 - I understand that Niobium is not simple to weld but those Welds are not very good.
There are many Companies that could do a better job. Apex EP claims to have a Clean Room and do Niobium but I've seen better than that also.
Wouldn't machining and using Choke Joints www.radartutorial.eu/03.linetheory/tl13.en.html allow easier manufacturing and cleaning; avoiding the difficulty of finding someone to weld Niobium decently (close to perfect).
Electropolishing would smooth the surface followed by a finish of Electron Beam Deposited Niobium or Laser Gas Nitriding.
You need to *improve those Welds* or manufacture them differently.

Rob
that's just a model... not the actual thing
I'm always curious. As of 2/3/18, there are 538 likes and 12 dislikes. Now, while I could go off on a rant about the sad state of the world when a 1 year old video like this only has 17K views and 538 likes, I am more curious about the 12 people who hit the thumbs down. What could have possibly caused 12 people to go out of their way to dislike something that has zero objectionable content? I mean aside from ETOH induced dementia, Traumatic Brain Injury or a host of other neurologic disorders.
science is boring.
I love that I can come here and be away from Tesla fanatics!
Tadesan Tesla was going to make free powa fo da whole world but da gubmint kilt him. Those people? Lol
