As a Redskin fan growing up, have nothing but respect for the greatness of Roy Green. Lomax is an underrated quarterback that doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
my dad worked security for the Pats for many years and I got to see many games back in the 80s and meet many players, home & away, over the years. the 84 Cardinals were by far the nicest bunch of visiting players Id ever met. Coach Hanifan too, who I was saddened to hear about his passing today, was a great guy. Im still disappointed over that stupid Washington game and wished the football gods would have smiled more on this team. they deserved better. awesome guys & so fun to watch.
The missed extra point in week one hurt more than a missed rushed 52 yard FG. Losing to 2 mediocre teams in Green Bay and New Orleans crushed this team.
The St.Louis Cardinals Football highlights a special to me. And hearing Jack Buck make the calls on Roy Green’s touchdowns bring back sweet memories of the 1980’s in my beloved Busch Stadium.
I am so glad to hear that, Jamearl, and I feel exactly the same way. We had a tortured existence as NFL fans in StL, but the Big Red were the team most of us loved the most. We grew up with them, and win or lose they were our team. I will always miss them, but love looking back at those days.
@@dn35243524, the CBS station where I live (WKBN-TV 27, Youngstown, Ohio) carried 6 of the Big Red football games in 1984. Week 6, Big Red at Dallas; Week 10, Big Red vs. L.A. Rams; Week 11, Big Red vs. Dallas; Week 13, Big Red vs. Philadelphia; Week 15, Big Red vs. N.Y. Giants and Week 16, Big Red at Washington.
Team never really recovered.....I was sad but proud they went to RFK and gave them damn Skins all they could handle. Scared the sh** out of everyone in the stadium. I could live with that for 35 years to this day. A Cardinals fan since 74 and give NO apologies for that either.
I still say the roughing the passer penalty on EJ Junior that had the Deadskins go from 3rd and long to 1st and ten allowing them to kick the winning FG was one of the biggest BS calls in history. I rank it up there on the same type of call on Sugar Bear Hamilton of the Patriots against the Raiders in the 1976 AFC divisional game.
That 84 season and the 74 and 75 were my favorite Card years. I agree that was a nonexistent pass interference on Green which robbed them of the playoffs. I really think there were those perhaps in Vegas who had an interest in other teams. The team would have run the table in the playoffs. It really had far reaching implications because a playoff run would have gotten them a new stadium to prevent them from moving to Arizona years later. Also Roy Green is far underrated. Hall of Fame voters should have considered him losing two and a half years on defense and the injuries to Lomax later.
Not only the phantom offensive PI call but the BS roughing the passer call on EJ Junior in Washington in the last game. That would have put the Redskins at 3rd and long. On the self inflicted side, missing an extra point in week 1 didn't help either.
I completely agree re: the new stadium. If they beat Washington in Week 16, they play a playoff game at home vs. the Bears and somehow they figure it out with Bidwill
"Green's knowledge of defenses was unsurpassed". Being a former defensive back definitely helped. And 10:50, the Cards picked apart the vaunted 4-6 defense that ended up being so dominating the following season.
Even though the Cards didn't make the playoffs that year ('84), they were still impressive that year!! One of my favorite games in that season was their first game in the season against the Redskins (@ St Louis), the Cards won that game (26 - 24)!!
Would have been nice still having 2 teams named the Cardinals in St.Louis ..all big red owner Bill Bidwell wanted was another Stadium for the football team and he didn't get it so he left
The Cardinals are a team that has experienced a lot of missed opportunities. The 1968 team would've made the playoffs if the Cardinals hadn't tied the Steelers. Finished a half-game behind the Browns who they beaten both times that season. I hope that the Cardinals can win a Super Bowl someday.
David Newman, if I remember correctly, the Big Red football KMOX radio broadcast team for 1984 were: Jack Buck (PBP, Regular Season Games 6, 8-16), Dan Kelly (PBP, Pre Season Games 1-4, Regular Season Games 1-5), Ray Scott (Regular Season Game 7) & Dan Dierdorf (C).
I'm inclined to agree. Winning the division, hosting, and winning a playoff game would have gone a long way. That year they showed they could hang with anyone even going blow for blow with Dan Marino.
Times change, situations change, but I always hated it that there were no longer BALTIMORE Colts, and ST. LOUIS Cardinals...just terrible that the franchises left the fans, threw tradition away. That's what's wrong with the whole thing now. Take the hitting out of the game, inject a bunch of political stuff, turn it into a glitzy circus, take the realness out of it. I haven't watched it in maybe five years. It's a big drag now.

One of the greatest team that miss the playoffs

I remember my 1st year as a freshman and was lucky to wear #15. It was an awesome underdog season. They had speed, grit and lots of guts.
Agreed ... maybe the best Cardinals team that everyone forgot because of a missed field goal
So true. My favorite team ever. Plus they blew the game in New Orleans. Which I live in New Orleans and went too. I was so mad they lost
That was a tough field goal though

Jim Hanifian best offensive line coach ever

I really feel if they had won the NFC East that year, they never would have moved. They were never the same after '84.

Some of these mid/late 80s Lomax' Card teams were really good.. but overshadowed by better, division rivals (Redskins & Giants)..

The silver anniversary of 84 with Jack Buck , Dan Dierdorf , and Dan Kelly

At that point and time, where were they gonna put a new stadium? Wentzville? God forbid, east St. Louis?
@@derricdueker64 probably the same spot the DOME was built

This team should have made the playoffs. Would have been fun to see how far they could have gone.
Would have probably fallen to the Niners, but yeah, what if

The Ray Scott?
@Rockhound6165 If they made the playoffs in 1984 could they defeat the San Francisco 49ers cause nobody in the nfc did

St Louis Cardinals has a much better ring then Arizona.
