This takes me back to my early boyhood, so many years ago as to make me feel ancient just thinking about it. It was our town's fourth of July parade. Out front was what today is called a drum line that included several base drums. Next, a team of six huge white long haired horses with the fanciest ornate harnesses and other embellishments including a lot of ostrich feathers and all manner of sparkly things pulled this gigantic monstrous mechanical wonder. It played this very piece of music and others and every note was accentuated with a blast of steam each coming from a different part of the thing. There was a teamster up top guiding the horses and two or three attendants all wearing old fashioned band uniforms. This led an army of clowns performing various tricks including a lot of jugglers. That was followed by a train of elephants some with riders. I think it was part of a circus that participated in our parade every year. Then in the late 1970's it stopped. By 1980 we no longer had the parade in any form. I sure miss that calliope. I haven't seen one like that in over 40 years.
