      Bill Taylor I also see 2 front sights and 2 targets. I just focus on the left images since I’m left eye dominant. I’m new to shooting and hoping my brain will eventually work it out. If it’s too distracting I end up just closing my right eye but I try not to do that.

    As a certified NRA instructor for many years teaching malfunction clearing, I can say that this gentleman did things quite well. His explanations were on point and he believed in the kiss principle. Keep it simple stupid. It took me awhile before I became an instructor to understand there's actually a difference between a failure to eject and a failure to extract and how they are handled. A stovepipe is it type of failure to eject. Kudos to the both of you. Job well done.!

    I’m a guy who found your channel about three years ago while trying to help my wife. We both started shooting and carrying later in life (60s). Here are some take aways: 1) We love your videos. While aimed at women, I still learn a great deal from you AND Mack. 2) Having him involved adds a great deal to the information and impact of your work. Please don’t take this wrong. It is still your channel and wouldn’t be the same if he did it alone. You are what makes it work. But adding him is a huge plus. 3) We’ve enjoyed watching your relationship grow. PLEASE keep your lives private, but let us be a part. 4) Whatever you do, please don’t stop doing this. It means a great deal to us. We would have a huge hole if you were not here. We might still learn and develop, but we wouldn’t enjoy it as much. I’ve tried a few other channels. It isn’t even close.

      I was too. Buy some dummy rounds (they're super cheap. You can find them at gun stores and even on Amazon) and mix them into your magazines when you go to the range. Not only does this help you learn to clear malfunctions, using them will improve your accuracy BIG TIME. Stav did a video on using dummy rounds to improve accuracy fairly recently. The thumbnail is her looking at the camera with a surprised look on her face lol

      Mechelle Wiesenthal, your new gun should come with an owner's manual. Read it from cover to cover. It should have field stripping, cleaning/lubricating, and reassembly sections. Every gun is different and requires different care (for example, one of my guns requires a dab of lubrication on all its moving parts, whereas, another one requires virtually no disassembly with only minimal areas to keep clean). Also, be sure to clear the gun FIRST, and clean in a well-ventilated area, and wear eye protection! And don't ever clean your barrel from the muzzle end. That's how you can scuff the muzzle, making your gun lose its accuracy.
      About 15 years ago, I took the NRA's Pistol/Handgun Safety Course, and we spent a lot of time on learning how to clean our firearms. It was a 10 hour course (all day... but went quickly). I learned things there that were very valuable and not commonly discussed (like, washing your hands with COLD water after you're shooting, so you don't absorb lead into your skin). Of course, SAFETY was their priority. If you're a new shooter, I strongly recommend that you take that course, and if you can afford to get some private instruction, do that too!
      Welcome and best of luck to you!

      @mechellebowman3365 3 года назад +1

      Donya Lane Thank you! I looked in to the NRA class and unfortunately it’s only online right now. My owners manual doesn’t include it either, I checked. I’ve watched a few RUclips videos on it but would love to see more. Ideally I wish someone would show me in person but so far no luck with that lol.

    I love your videos and recommend them often. One tip for those of us who enjoy introducing new shooters to the sport: When your newbie has the gun and experiences an issue, don’t be quick to take the gun back and fix it. Instead, make sure they keep the gun pointed down range, finger off the trigger, and patiently walk them through whatever needs to be done. That will build confidence and independence. Once I hand the unloaded gun (in its zippered or hard case) and ammo to someone I’m helping, It’s my goal not to touch it again until it is back in its case. I only break that rule if the person lacks physical strength to fix the issue, or if I am unable to effectively communicate what needs to be done. This assumes you gave a thorough initial briefing before putting the unloaded gun back in the case and handing it to them. After that, just use your patient, encouraging, soothing voice to empower them to handle everything.

    • @MtnBadger
      @MtnBadger 3 года назад

      The problem you mentioned with the slid lock/stop is one of two problems that using the slide stop causes.
      I try my dangles to teach people, be it guns (I was a munitions specialist and small arms expert in the military) or any other type of repetitive, mechanical action, to build up the good habits, first (the habits that cause the least amount of nalfunctions/anomalies and breakdowns of any kind, even if it's a bit slower, then work in the appropriate "shortcuts" later, after mastering the basic functions of the gun/equipment at hand. There's no difference except that a gun will kill a cohort much faster than messing up a machine. It's learning a concept, not just "acknowledging a sentence."
      Learning the right (slower, more deliberate) way means much less initial problems and reinforces the shooting experience.
      The second (and much less serious) issue with using the slide-lock to release the slide is that the repeated motion wears the related parts much more quickly than using the "slingshot" method. :)
      No.1 is what you mentioned, you get overzealous and release the slide before seating the magazine. That problem is 100% eliminated when you seat the magazine and then reach up and release the slide ("slingshot") manually. You cannot "jump" the magazine seating with an early release of the slide stop if you *don't use the slide stop!*
      For new shooters who are learning their weapon and how to run it as smoothly as possible, before picking up any "shortcuts" or bad habits until they truly get the function down, use the offhand slide release all the time and the gun will go bang on the first shot, everytime. :)
      One other thing to keep in mind... When you have a failure to fire, if you're not in actual combat, there is a real safety issue that must be addressed and kept in mind.
      The old phrase "It's the one you didn't expect that gets you..." Well, it's true. One thing that can cause a failure to fire (FTF) is contaminated ammo.
      Ammo present while cleaning a firearm (a big no-no, btw) can get sprayed with cleaners... Ballistol, WD40, whatever, can degrade the ammo causing hang-fires.
      They're few and far between with modern ammo but, search for hangfires in RUclips and you'll see good examples.
      The problem comes when you have an FTF and you speedily and aggressively go through your "tap, rack, bang" drill, you're used to there being dummy rounds, so you "feel safe" (over confidence or being unaware of potential problems are both an invitation to disaster) and you immediately tap, rack and bang your way through BUT.. The moment you pull your gun off-line with the target and start to rack your slide... "BANG" the degraded round decides to let loose. And we know what that can mean.
      The solution, every time you have an FTF, resist the urge to move to action, keep the barrel pointing down range and give it just a few seconds. Then, while still keeping your barrel pointed down range (you're supposed to do that, anyway, right??) go through your tap, rack, bang drill.
      I've seen people here who had contaminated a whole case of ammo (trying to clean the rust off of some surplus that wasn't stored right), defeating the sealing layer and soaking the primers and some of the main charges in solvent, making for some interesting shooting.
      There's a video on the 'Tube, somewhere here,, of the session at the range... And got a large number of hangfires and some squids, for his trouble.
      So, sorry for the diatribe, it's just a very serious matter that no one gives any credence because of "modern ammo."
      Be sure you don't have your ammo out when you're in cleaning mode, always pause for a bit before doing your clearing drill,, keep the barrel down range and you'll be fine..
      Having a round go off while its flying through the air (I've seen it happen) because you rushed a training drill is a bad feeling. No one should have it.
      excellent videos. Just expect the unexpected and you'll be fine. :)

What works for them, might not work for you. And that's were a very good instructor comes in, he provides you alternatives, he will identify what may and may not work for you. I love how Mac doesn't try to ram down your throat the way he does it. So many people making gun videos trying to make you feel like an idiot when you don't do it their way. Mac is an excellent instructor, World class instructor. Everybody is different, and when you are dealing with a deadly weapon, you should know what to do and what makes you feel comfortable without criticism.

    You two are beyond awesome! If wish I'd discovered your channel sooner. I'm a senior woman learning to shoot and recently joined a very rural, outdoor range. I went alone for the first time last week and was the only one there--nobody to ask for help. I had what I now understand to be a failure to extract. I could see the jammed cartridge, but had no idea if it was spent or live and had no idea how to safely resolve the problem. I brought it to the dealer, who used a ruler to see how far down the barrel the rod was able to reach. That allowed him to determine that it was not a live round and he was able to remove the cartridge.
    I have a Bersa 22, which I like for its light weight, minimal recoil, and general ease of use with small hands. After the malfunction I did quite a bit of online research, which is how I found your wonderful channel. I also learned that my gun is very fussy about ammunition and doesn't like the less-expensive plinking rounds. It prefers CCI mini mags. The dealer explained that some smaller guns have this issue. Just an FYI for others.

    Great instructions. My last 6 months in the Army I was the range officer on the M16 full auto range for boots at Ft Dix (1972). Having survived my tour in Nam, I did not want to get shot by a boot handling an M16 on full auto for the first time. The rule on my range was if your weapon misfires lay it down and an NCO will clear it. I stayed in the tower where I could see the whole range. With 60 newbies on the line at a time more than once someone would sweep the tower after a misfire. Their instinct when the weapon failed to fire was to look in the chamber and they would forget muzzle discipline, and yes that was in my lecture before they stepped to the line. I found that only experienced shooter could retain all the info I gave them

Very important information as to operate and get use to the proper procedure to handle situations while at the range or at home. I just love your videos, I have learned a lot and have use it at the range during some classes that I've too. Keep making more of these fundamentals for all to see, learn and experience the results of good marksmanship and handling of any weapon with safety in mind.......ALWAYS

    I am new to guns and shooting this year,2023, and age 66. Took the CCW class and got my permit then bought three guns so far this year. A Henry 22 classic rifle. Then bought a S&W M & P 22 Magnum because of the easy slide and 30 round capacity and fits my hand good. Then a used H & K P2000 because it was a 9mm and easier to carry. Also had Da/Sa action. Each gun I ran dummy rounds though them for a week to learn how they function before getting live rounds and shooting them. I did learn how to clear a double fed by ripping the mag out on my own, lol. Thanks for the video.

    I just love your content, so, incredibly in-depth, and helpful. I am a beginner. Just joined a range, doing my first-class 'beginners pistol' at the end of the month. Purchased a Glock 43X MOS. I have a Sigma SV9E, that I have done some practice with. I plan to take every class the rage has that will give me more knowledge, comfort, familiarity, and confidence. Stav, I genuinely appreciate the way you instruct and demonstrate. Can't thank you enough for the 'wrack' advice I have small hands; I am starting to feel confident there now thank you.
    Mac, 'Clearing handgun malfunctions' I couldn't have stumbled onto this at a better time. I have been going to the range alone to get familiar with my gun before this class and because I am eager to know it. I have been lucky no issues of happened. I can't thank you enough for relieving some of my worry and lack of knowledge in this area, so, simply, and thoroughly.

    On behalf of ALL shooters thank you for addressing the issue of malfunctions. Especially for those who are new to owning a gun. My father began taching me to shoot when I was 5 years old. He did this with all my brothers. I was #6 out of a famil of 7 sons, no daughters. So yes our bedroom was fairly similar to a barracks with all 7 beds lined up and we all had footlockers too. But enough of that.
    I am sure that a lot of first time gun owners will thank you for addressing how a pistol functions and how to resolve the different types of malfunctions.
