Absolutely.... he gets it! The US is WAY more dependent on China than they are on us. We rely on China for the VAST majority of our consumer goods, and for critical and absolutely essential parts for industrial machinery, production machinery, transportation, etc. If we cut ourselves off from that supply of essential materiel, we'll be completely screwed in short order. We spent the last 30+ years exporting our production capabilities to China... why? To take advantage of their ocean of cheap labor... most of a billion peasants tired of basically barely above subsistence farming out in the provinces, willing to move to the overcrowded cities to get a factory job and have more money, even if it was a pittance. For US companies this was a GOLD mine... no unions, no high priced labor and shortages of labor and high priced benefits to employ US workers, almost nonexistent environmental and workforce regulations... which reducing all those costs allowed for cheaper prices for China-produced stuff in the USA while STILL reaping a higher profit margin for the corporation, management, and shareholders... a total win/win. Added transport costs from China but new mega-size container ships took care of that, no problem. Now all of a sudden the USA wants to "reverse all that" and acts like they can do that OVERNIGHT, a process that has taken over 30 years to accomplish. Simple fact is the US is in no condition to do it even if it COULD be reversed overnight. There's no skilled labor pool in the US anymore, and what labor there is is ENORMOUSLY more expensive than in China. Regulations costs also have a HUGE impact on production costs in the US, from environmental regs to worker protection standards, benefits requirements, etc. Even just building a new factory or expanding the old one will require environmental impact studies and a permit process that takes years and millions of dollars to accomplish. Even the fast food joints and Walmart, low end jobs that require basically no skills and no education cannot find enough decent employees... where do you think they'll find huge amounts of SKILLED, EDUCATED, and TRAINED workers to increase production in the USA? All these costs will be added to the price of whatever is produced in the USA, so that if something produced in China cost X amount, then producing it in the USA one could expect it to cost at least 3X the amount, maybe 5X the amount. Just like the cheap natural gas that Russia was selling to Europe now costs 4-5X as much when replaced by LNG hauled over by tankers from the USA. If we get into a full-fledged trade and sanctions war with China, the USA will be crippled in a matter of weeks if not months. First off, most of our consumer goods come from China. How will people respond when they go to their local Walmart or Target and find 3/4 of the shelves bare, the cost of what they do have increased by 3-4X what it was a month or two before? Production and transportation of goods within the United States will be the next victim, as essential parts and supplies run out and there's no replacements for them. What will happen when people find themselves laid off from their job because critical production machinery is at a standstill because of lack of repair or replacement parts, tooling, etc? Sales of US Treasuries have been in dire straits for awhile now because China and other countries can see the writing on the wall and have greatly reduced or quit buying US debt entirely. For one thing, they realize that buying US debt is basically lending us the money to go to war with them, and how foolish is it to do that? Secondly, they've realized for awhile that the US was going to try to strongarm them with sanctions eventually, and our uncontrolled debt growth was going to eventually make a default inevitable, and economic collapse with it. SO the Chinese have been stocking up on gold and other raw materials necessary to sustain their industrial economy, and if necessary, wartime economy, despite US sanctions. The US gubmint has basically been printing phony money to buy its own national debt (T-bills) that it needs to sell to borrow the money necessary to run the gubmint... it's like writing yourself a hot check to cover an IOU that you put in the bank to cover the hot checks you have out all over town that will be hitting the bank in the next few days... how long does anyone think a Ponzi scheme like that can possible last?? I have nothing to add. Dmitri said it all, as usual. The contempt for the West that is oozing out of every seam of his answers is something I totally share. Call back in a couple of years, maybe something of value for mankind can be salvaged from the ruins of what was once the "West"!
