    *This video is chewing on some pink snot.* The vast majority of users of Serif Affinity products are people who left Adobe products because there was a subscription payment model. It was a worthy alternative. And now this alternative has been sold to a large corporation that also applies a subscription payment model. You don't have to be very smart to prolong the trend and figure out where Affinity will go by joining those they've been fighting and competing with. This is the end of their independent policy. And Serif has betrayed one of its key competitive advantages. And by doing so, they essentially betrayed the trust of millions of their users. This is the end of the company's previous policy, which it could only pursue as an independent company.

    Honestly, as a Canva subscriber and an Affinity owner, I can't see how this change will improve the way I use both apps. I hope that the pricing for Affinity stays roughly the same and that it continues to be offered as a one-time buy. I'm trying to stay positive but it's hard to have faith.

    Canva "casual design" that is an understatement, it's a pile of templates!
    FYI The FAQ is PR Bull S!!!
    No changes to our current pricing model PLANNED AT THIS TIME - this isn't within their control anymore.
    This is a race to the subscription model, we have seen it all before.
    Check the affinity forum, there are over 20 pages of users that hate this decision.
    The owners of Affinity products can promise anything, it doesn't matter if it is in a video or an FAQ, but they can't make it happen, because they don't own the company anymore.
    I wonder how many RUclips Affinity channels will try to spin this as a positive?

    • @lethercreate
      @lethercreate 6 месяцев назад

      Several. Because toxic positivity runs everything. I’m learning how to navigate Adobe Fresco and headed back to Adobe. Affinity removed our direct link to one of the free stock photos we had. And left us with the Canva owned pexel and pixabay. And no wonder my apps have been extra crassly lately. I am beyond annoyed.

    • @ConcreteAdvisory
      @ConcreteAdvisory 6 месяцев назад +3

      That’s what I don’t understand. The only thing Canva COULD bring to Canva is AI implementation, which affinity lacks to be honest (mostly affinity photo tho, not designer). Which would put even less interest in Canva’s own software… so I don’t understand this move.
      But if Affinity keeps the Affinity branding , pricing, and improves its development thanks to canva’s money, then it’s fine. But that’s very wierd. But it has happen as well, sometimes acquisitions are well done. But we know Canva as well… I fear they focus development on mobile etc (which we don’t need more than the iPad app for professional work).

    My heart completely sank yesterday when I heard this news. I really hope you’re right that subscription will creep in gradually for things like AI capability only (which doesn’t interest me). Worst case scenario is the subscription model is across the board but it would be a massive PR mistake for them and is already alienating its loyal customer base. Not that this ever stopped Adobe!

    06:20 That's WHY they didn't implement smart selection / background remover A.I tools in Affinity... I never understood why they didn't want to implement this tool, but now everything is clear : it will be a paid add-on / subscription feature.
    And it will work... the amount of time gained by one click selection over a tedious (and sometimes outright not working) refine selection will justify the purchase (well, more like a rent, right ?) for lots of users.
    And I won't be part of it.

But they intend to charge us or make us buy a subscription with little add ons or get pro which most of us cannot afford😢 so if we are without means we truly will have no real options for a software that will allow us to stand along side creators/designers with the most ability to afford pretty much any pricing… 😢😢😢😢😢

    A monthly fee is out of the question for me. There are months i don't use Affinity at all and i'm not going through the stupid subscribe/unsubscribe to save a couple of bucks. Yet that is what a sub-model is aiming at.
    On the plus side: Canva is still privately held, while being funded by investors. So for now it doesn't appear they were just after another cash cow to milk until dry, but rather extend their services. I'm reserved optimistic this isn't the end of Affinity software.

    I would love to have the easy background removal etc Canva offers available in Affinity. As long as it is substantially less than the Canva Pro subscription, I will be fine with it. I was even considering subscribing to Canva to save me time learning and implementing tedious background removal skills and steps in Affinity after/when/if my KDP books start increasing income to cover the cost. I am 62 years old. All this sturm and drang (literally 'storm and stress' ) over the what ifs is a waste of energy and emotion, IMO. I hope you’re right when you say that canvas pro users would just have access to affinity products. I wouldn’t mind that. As you say, if it brings more light on Affinity that’s nice.
    I just don’t want Canva to intervene in anything on the Affinity program. That’s not their target, that’s not their sector initially so they don’t know much about what we want and need. I also hope they will at least bring their bigger AI R&D to Affinity (mostly for Affinity Photo, but included on the initial price). If they make AI paid, it better be industry leading. Which is already not at all the case on Canva…. (That’s nice but not enough for professionals) 😓
    So yeah. I’m still very concerned for now. But we’ll see… I’ll stay on V2 for a while if they change anything.
    For your final question, no. I don’t want to pay for Canva. I don’t need that program, it has nothing I need when I already have a professional software. And no I won’t pay any subscription for basic AI tools that could be done in local (Da Vinci does it with VIDEO, so don’t tell me they can’t do basic AI work like background removal etc in local). Plus if the basic AI work is made on servers, then we need an internet access. I often work outdoor on my MacBook so that’s a big no for me.
    Lastly what I hope they’ll do, is the possibility for us to export our affinity designs to a Canva template. That would be excellent for the clients who need templates but don’t feel ready to work on an app more complex than Canva. But the programs are so different that I’m not sure they could do that.

    Canva isn’t going to kill the Affinity apps. At least not on purpose. Affinity’s apps don’t compete with Canva so clearly they want to branch out into the professional space.
    Besides the fear of forcing a subscription model on us, most professional designers find Canva’s template business model distasteful. Most of us have spent years, sweat, and money to hone our skills and be good at what we do. Canva? Don’t hire a professional, here just use a template, it’ll be okay. 😒

    • @billbowman8747
      @billbowman8747 6 месяцев назад +3

      Absolutely. I don't disagree with you. The genie is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back. And all AI is doing is sampling the work of real creatives with real talents and kicking back something like it. AI couldn't do what it does without the talent, blood and sweat of the designers and creative professionals that it's "stealing" from.
      Putting AI aside, my point is, many creative professionals don't have warm and fuzzy feelings toward Canva's "Here use a template" business model. I have been a working designer / Illustrator / Educator for nearly 40 years, and outside of a handful of clients who understand what we do, it has been a constant battle for respect. Canva, sites like Fiver do not help. Logo "contests" are a joke and devalue what we as creatives do. Logo "contests" have always frustrated me. When was the last time electricians or plumbers were expected to come in and work for free and if the client liked what they did, they just might get paid. (A big part of the blame goes to designers who fall for this scam.) We have people expect us to work for free, saying it will be "good for your portfolio", or "do this for free and there will be more work down the road".
      Sometimes what we as creatives do, might look easy, but it only looks easy because we have spent, years, blood and sweat, and hard earned money, honing our craft to be good at what we do. This has been a life-long battle for designers, illustrators, and photographers.
      Essentially this is a long rant explaining why business models like Canva's don't give creative professionals warm and fuzzy feelings. They will need to win many of us over. I like Affinity's software, I just hope Canva doesn't crap the bed.@@ounasi

    • @ounasi
      @ounasi 6 месяцев назад

      Of course, many designers share a basic pursuit and professional knowledge. As a designer with 20 years of experience, I believe that respect for the industry is not the issue. It's like the transition from film to digital - the battle is already underway, and we can't stop progress. Holding onto strong idealistic position is no longer a realistic option. The real issue is the epistemological determinism of the will. The terms 'photographers' and 'philosophers' will always be a minority in the fields of photography and philosophy. I believe that in the near future, designers will also become a minority in the field of design. This is because only a few individuals truly seek to understand and excel in these areas. Orthodox, collegiate designers should have a strong distaste for the canvas business model(like someone calling it ‘bullshit’), but on the premise of benefit theory, this distaste seems to be negligible in the context of the broader need for it, and in fact, Midjourney led to a major redundancy at our design business partner company, which I'm sure will be the norm from here on out.@@billbowman8747

    • @billbowman8747
      @billbowman8747 6 месяцев назад

      There is no question that AI has turned a lot of industries on their ear. (just ask the screenwriters guild) As I previously said, the genie is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back. I accept that. The "just use this template" mentality or "I'll just use AI rather that pay a real person" makes me sad. It makes me worry for the future of all of my students. I give a shit about them.
      In any case, we have gone down a long and complicated path here but rest assure, I see both sides, I'm just not thrilled with the direction things are heading.
      Back to the acquisition of Affinity by Canva, I would have been much more excited if they were acquired by say… Figma. I could really get behind that! Since Adobe's acquisition of Figma fell through, wouldn't a Figma-Affinity 1-2 punch have been awesome!
      Am I willing to give Canva a chance? Yes.
      Am I optimistic that this deal will be good for consumers and the creative industry as a whole? Not so much, but I hope so. Then again, I have been wrong before, just ask my ex-wife! @@ounasi

    We may not like it, but thats the direction all software developer will have to go sooner or later. It is not possible to run that kind of business just with a new paid update every few years. What features are left to implement in affinity 3, that people will pay another hundret Dollar for? Maybe Ki... but then? The employers want to be paid every month. So in the long run, there will be no other way than implementing a subscription model. Or we just work permanently with old or free software like Gimp or scribus and accept all the limitations they have.
