March in the Dirr Garden: A Walk Through the Redbuds

  • This new video is focused primarily on Redbud with a mini-bonus discussion of Baptisia variations at the end. There are approximately 15 Redbuds in the Dirr garden, some now 15 years old. They exhibit a wide range of habits, foliage and flower colors. Cercis canadensis, eastern or Canadian Redbud, is one of North America’s great flowering trees. For many years, few variations in ornamental traits were available. Breeding and selection in North Carolina and Tennessee opened the genetic portal to variation never considered possible. The colorful foliage traits in many new cultivars bring an added dimension to the garden extending from the end of flowering to leaf abscission in autumn. May the video educate and inspire you to consider one of the many choices mentioned therein for your own personal garden.

    I had 2 of your books and lent them out and never got them back. That is how good your books are. I just looked at Amazon and it is about $59. Saving up for it. 75 and still learning.

    I've owned -- and used -- your Manual of Woody Landscape Plants for several decades. I recently bought an updated version. Such a wealth of useful information. Thank you for sharing your garden!

    However long you can talk about redbuds - I can listen. I have an Eastern redbud & am looking for another variety. Since you mentioned that they can flower at different times I will look for one that occurs earlier.

    You have a beautiful collection of Cercis! I’m a redbud lover too! I love how you have large, expansive gardens, instead of acres of lawn. Great video! Thank you to both you and your wife for taking the time to make this.

    Not weary. Learning from the master. I am super glad I found your video. I was introduced to your books by my landscape teacher in college courses on landscaping and received my diploma and license. My professor praised you highly.

    Your "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" was required reading for the Woody Plants course I took back in college over 30 years ago; the professor referred to it as the "Bible" of woody plants . . . and he was right. The scientific information was great, but even more than that, I always appreciated the added practical commentary and personal experience. I still have my book, but it has had so much use that the binding is falling off. Looks like it's time to get the update. Really glad to see you here on RUclips and looking forward to more videos.

    Thanks for the video. After adding several redbuds last year, I've run out of space for more until somethingelse is chopped out. The variegated Whitewater is another good one, and several years ago I planted a variegated yellow/green redbud mixed in a field of Rising Sun in North Carolina. The variegation seems stable, but unfortunately, most of the Rising Sun in this field perished with vascular dieback.

    Wow your Floating Clouds has grown much faster than mine. Mine has been in my Indiana yard for about 13 years. They must like your yard better than mine. The main trunk on mine is still smaller than the branch you showed the close up of the flower on. Mine seems to have a strong tendency to send branches arching downward. While nothing I read said this was a weeping sort of tree, mine tried hard to do just that. Those lower branches eventually started to die and I've cut them off which makes mowing so much easier.

      @urchinsushi2041 5 месяцев назад

      @@taylorswf23 the Merlot (about 10 feet now?) seems to be doing well, budding and about to bloom - did have a stressful first year in ground, think it may have been under-watered - now entering 3rd year healthy, knock on wood - I planted my Ruby Falls last fall, about 6 ft, terrific form, looking forward to seeing it leaf out for the first time - how are yours faring?

    • @taylorswf23
      @taylorswf23 5 месяцев назад

      @@urchinsushi2041 lovely! Both mine were planted last spring. They’re both bloom now, the Merlot a little ahead and starting to push leaves. My Ruby Falls especially looked pitiful last year (light green leaves). I was disappointed but I’m hoping it just needed a season to acclimate and the color will improve this year

    I was pleasantly surprised you had an Avondale Redbud. I have one, or so that's what the tag said. I've been trying to find one to compare. I'm having problems with my tree. It's a single trunk and appears not to be growing or very slow.its currently leafing out but only on the ends of some branches. It's as tall as Imit was when I fought 3 yrs ago, 5ft. Any ideas what to do?

    We had a two Rising Sun redbuds and they didn't survive our winter, zone 5 Ohio, the nursery replaced one and last year half of the tree didn't survive. Love redbuds and the Rising Sun but I doubt the hardiness of this cultivar..
    Thoughts?

    Maybe you can tell me why... We have a Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy. It is about 20 years old. We're in west coast zone 7. and it has never bloomed. It gets tiny buds every spring which have never open. They just fall off. Any reason you might suggest.

    How does floating clouds compare to alley cat? Supposedly the latter holds the variegation longer?
    And do you do anything for Ambrosia beetle?

    • @DrMichaelADirr
      @DrMichaelADirr  5 месяцев назад

      I had Alley Cat and lost it. I do not know the reason why. Many people consider Alley Cat to have better variegation than FC. Both reproduce the variegated characteristic true to type from seed. I have had Ambrosia beetle on a Forest Pansy which I removed and burned. Otherwise no issues.
