I'm conflicted about this. Sometimes I feel like the idea that to be Christian is to be happy and nice and smiley is a really difficult standard to live by, and can even feel oppressive. Most of the time I feel very despondent and I don't really feel nice towards most people. That being said, I pray that the Lord bless me with the joy of His salvation.

I think it was Saint Paul to the Philipians (4-4) the one who asked us to be always happy in the Lord, and repeated it, also asking to let others see that in us. I think this is decision one may, or may not, take. We are used to be happy or not according to what happens around us. But Paul ask us to be happy in the Lord, and the Lord is inside us, wether we believe it or not. All it takes is to be happy because no other reason than that and then all it takes is to put a natural smile on us. It has a tremendous impact.

Not happy but joyful happiness is mere feeling joyfulness is a mindset

Abbot Tryphon is a fake social media monk.
Whatever happened to the monastic principle, “Flee familiarity"? Social media monks have too much of the spirit of the world. In my view, an abbot that uses Facebook and RUclips has no business guiding souls. Orthodox monasticism does not allow for familiarity and socializing. Online social media monks talk too much. A good monk is silent. A good monk never speaks, unless spoken to. If he has to respond, it will be brief, and to the point, with no manifestation of human passion. Any monk who uses RUclips and social media should not even be in a monastery, because he is not serious about spiritual life and advancement/Theosis. I have a fundamental disagreement with these kind of monks, because they do not genuinely represent the Orthodox monastic tradition. Can you imagine St. John Maximovich, Elder Joseph the Hesychast, St. Silouan the Athonite or any of the Optina Elders being on social media? No way. A true monk who is serious about what he is doing imitates the saints with all his heart. And why is an abbot allowed to be on the Internet and social media but not his monks? As a layman I definitely have my own vices, but as a monk I would never be on social media or the Internet unless my abbot gave me an obedience to. I may come across as judgmental, but my intention is to help these people. I just want them to be good clergy and good monks. By using social media, fake monks are inadvertently endorsing and promoting the social media culture, and by doing so are minimizing the deleterious spiritual and psychological effects it has on human souls. These monks lack discernment and have too much of the world in them.
