    The kneejerk reaction she had to the Steam Deck is probably down to the most subtle design philosophy that Nintendo has cultivated over the years. I've tried a few third-party emulation machines that checked all the boxes in terms of functionality, but I could never figure out why it was so much less appealing to hold in my hand

      Ironically the Switch is one of the least ergonomically satisfying handheld devices Nintendo have produced, and the Steam Deck is actually very comfortable to hold, if a tad large. I say this as someone with below average hand size for a Caucasian male.

    Honestly, the JoyCons are really the more delicate part - the screen itself is IMO just as solid as the older model. I've heard nothing about people having problems with the base unit, and I've never had problems with the base unit myself (other than the kickstand on the older model). It's always the JoyCons that have the problems.

    Surely the Analogue Pocket is what you're looking for in terms of the perfect emulation device, if everything you're emulating was originally handheld/is Gameboy homebrew?
    Even if you're emulating non-handheld 8 and 16 bit games, the Pocket has cores for classic home consoles too. And it's FPGA.

      And you've got the same issues as with the last video with flatout false reasoning. "Yeah, the Switch is underpowered but that's the point, like LEGO is blocky"
      Like, no. Worse hardware changes nothing about the game design, it just makes games run slower and less visually appealing. It also limits what games can run on it altogether. LEGO being blocky doesn't limit it in any way and custom pieces are created where simple blocks don't suffice, so there's no issue here. The analogy is straight up not applicable and just seems to be more irritating excuse-making.

    You talk about not wanting your kid to play games online in handheld mode. The regular switch goes handheld if picked up from the dock. So unless you lock away the switch or keep an eye on her at all times of the day, she could still play handheld without you watching. That argument makes no sense. Now, if it were an Xbox, a wii, or something like a Playstation (all of which require a TV.) Then she would be stuck playing in the open with everyone. If you have a game (physical copy, just pop it into the lite, or if it's digital, and you use the same nintendo account for both, it would just be downloaded again on the other device.)

    Excellent video! As a weird childless millennial who likes to get into petty online nerd fights, I have noticed parents my age lean hard towards the Switch because it's perfect for families just as you say: you can have individual Lites for people to enjoy handheld, but the standard Switch is for playing with the family. As someone who loves the Steam Deck, I hate to imagine a world where tons of kids wanted Valve's bulky miracle machine because buying multiple Decks for the whole family doesn't sound reasonable in the slightest! Steam Deck is really an enthusiast's device and despite the ability to dock and connect multiple controllers, really only serves single player experiences the best

    • @Thornskade
      @Thornskade 2 года назад

      The Deck is just as good for multiplayer as the Switch, if not better, not least of all because you can get decent controllers for 30 bucks a piece or being able to use controllers from previous consoles versus being stuck having to buy $60+ Nintendo Switch controllers, and multiplayer games for more than four people actually exist due to there not being a four players max limitation for games. I get that the Steam Deck just doesn’t gel with you, but having a video that on the surface looks like, “The Steam Deck sucks and the Switch is way better so I sold it for one” is kinda odd and I’m not a fan. Some of the points in this video didn’t make sense, either. One of which is the fact that you talk about how the Deck is overkill for your itchio GB Studio games and retro emulation games, and the Switch is much more suited (hardware-wise and form-factor-wise) to play those games in a portable format. While that’s understandable, I’m kinda baffled at that as well. Sure, fair point, but you do realize that your Switch, while better suited, doesn’t have the capability to play these games in any format besides hacking (which risks your account/system being banned by Nintendo)? Your points all make sense for your situation, regarding your occupation and home life and your kid, but I don’t feel like, “This is overkill” is a win for the Switch when the Deck can play those games and the Switch can’t.

I'm not saying one machine is better than the other, but rather the Switch meets my needs significantly more than the Steam Deck ever will. I'm sure it's a similar case for many others. I don't think people understand this factor when comparing the two consoles, which is leading to unfair bigotry over console preference choice, and that's not okay. It would also be nice to have a golden goose machine that plays all games at a legal and affordable price, is durable & powerful, and meets all portability factors but we are still a ways out from that becoming reality.

Okay, three suggestions: Don't give in rightaway, tell her that starting with (special occasion here, like birthday or religious observance), she gets to use it in handheld. Tell her that it won't be replaced, so any scratches or dings just have to stick and if it becomes unplayable, back to the Switch Lite. Otherwise, try not to punish or lecture about scratches or dings.
    Yes, accidents will happen. But, YOU will be better about your purchase. SHE will feel better about being given more responsibility. AND she gets to enjoy something more refined than she did before.

I have an original Game Boy that has stood the test of time and still plays games. Game Boy color, too. Several different models of the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo DS lite, and all of them have survived myriad drops on concrete while being carted around San Francisco and played for years. They have all the dings and scratches you'd expect, but are surprisingly functional. You probably would have been better off with the regular switch, granted the OLED also has the LAN port for Splatoon 3, but I think you also said you didn't want her playing online games by herself at her age, so yeah, probably would of been better to buy a regular switch, but what's done is done and it was the better choice for your family. Cheap steam deck with OLED screen for PC games without fan noise? Isn't there? Yes, there is. I play the following games on my 7 inch Switch OLED: rises D&D Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Enhanced Edition Divinity 2 DYING light uncut World was e.g Metro Lastlight Assassin rogue Assassin Black Flag Sniper4 Wolfenstein Borderlands 1+2+addon Crysis 1-3 Skyrim Anniversary Edition witcher 3 zombie army 4 Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden - Deluxe Edition xcom 2 Saints row 3 remastered Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy hit man 3 Outer worlds Jurassic Park Resident Evil Village vampire La noire narcotics dragon dogma Red faction guerrilla remastered Almost all games can be played completely offline without an internet connection. Without fan noise On OLED screen. The Switch OLED is light and handy and absolutely portable. A few games need a stable WiFi connection because they are cloud based. But most of them are purely offline games. I also installed RUclips. For me, the Switch is totally underrated. Most only know jrpgs and Nintendo Games. Hardly anyone knows that there are so many PC games porta. Play a Risen, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Divinity 2, Dying Light or Sniper4 completely offline? Brilliant . Completely silent. Steamdeck is out of the question for me because it is based on Linux and therefore no mods are possible or only in a roundabout way. That would be the only reason for me to buy it. And because I can't play comfortably on the couch as long as there is fan noise while playing. Find out what's available for the switch, Dying Light 2 is still coming in February and the latest Harry Potter Hogwarts. You can get a used OLED very cheaply

      Factually incorrect, *support didn't last long. Not the hardware. Steam controller had to be stopped due to patenting issues, it's genuinely one of the best controller designs in history. Steam machines failed because, well the state of linux in the windows 8 era. The valve index was again, the best vr headset on the market at launch (idk if new products have changed that). Valve has had some terrible luck in the past, but they do sure help the industry move forward. Even the failure of "steam machines" led to proton and completely reversed the state of linux gaming. Now look with the steam deck, so many companies are taking handheld seriously! Even if the deck itself isn't for you - you have a plethora of options! It's a win-win for everyone.

    The only reasons the switch is still alive and being sold is only for it's exclusives and ability to be both handheld and console,both things the steam deck can't do but if the steam deck ever gets a accessory like it's own dock to be able to be both console and handheld the switch would get screwed and this could happen.
    The steam deck has way better specs and can play almost any game and is like a mini PS5 and it having the ability to switch between tv and handheld would make the switch almost obsolete!The switch would only have Nintendo games but it wouldn't be selling that much when people could save up a little for a 400$ steam deck instead of spending 350$ on a low spec console that can play Nintendo games and that's it and most third party ganes would ditch switch for steam deck!
