      Years ago I went to the public hearing to extend the railroad and connect it with the other line near Blue Ash. So many ppl showed up to complain about it that my friend decided not to speak. They ruled against allowing the tracks to be reinstalled and reconnected so today they are two different branches

    • @HolidayDecorator

      Interesting. Happy to see a caboose on a train again.
      Question: What makes a crossing exempt and why is it exempt? Also exempt from what?
      I've never see one of these that I can recall, so very curious as to why they get labeled that way, and what criteria makes them exempt and what are they exempt from?

    • @Cozmo2k4
      @Cozmo2k4 5 лет назад +2

      Exempt means that any vehicle that needs to stop for that crossing doesn't need to. Most go exempt because of little or no rail traffic or very busy roads near intersections.

    • @HolidayDecorator
      @HolidayDecorator 5 лет назад +1

      @@Cozmo2k4 Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense to me now.
      At first, I didn't quite understand what was meant by it.
      Thanks for clearing that up. Now I know something new. :)

    Sometimes cabooses are used when you have a great deal of shoving (reverse movements) to do; sometimes they are called ‘shoving platforms’. It allows the Conductor/Foreman/Brakeman to comfortably stand looking aft vs hanging off the car. It does require an extra couple moves to place cars because you have to shove past your switch, take it off, pull fwd to place your cars, then come out and reconnect.
    Also, a caboose isn’t required anymore due to the EOT and better bearings in the wheels....No “fire watch” required or notification that the train broke apart.

    It's great to see a caboose. When we were kids, I am 52, it was a highlight to see them. I lived on the the West East line of Union Pacific through the Arkansas River Valley near the switchyards at Van Buren, Arkansas. Kids today don't know about the men that rode back there and their job.

    Lived in this area for 20+ years and hardly ever saw a train on this line. Where that shot was at the 5:36 mark is an abandoned switch close by that led to a paper mill on US-42 that has since been closed. The trackage is owned by the LM&M railroad and they had to come all the way up from Monroe on to get to this specific point in Mason.

      There's a couple of factories and a lumber yard to the south. That lumber yard must do a decent business, they get several car loads per week. The rail line is former Pennsylvania now operated by G&W owned Indiana and Ohio. For some reason, oblivious drivers are a common sight in that area.

    Unrealated fun fact...the radio antenna tower nearby is a Blaw-Knox design, one that isn't seen much these days. It's for WLW, 700 AM, one of the oldest radio stations in America. At one time in the 1930s, it broadcast at 500,000 watts of power, the most power out of any broadcaster, but has stopped a few years later due to interference with other radio stations.
