We have been live aboard sailors on our family sailing catamaran for five years now so we thought it must be time to take you on a full boat tour around our 43ft Fountaine Pajot Belize blue water sailboat.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

I'm curious how much battery charge you get from solar and wind vs how much you have to "unfurl the diesel" to keep the food cold, nav, etc.?
2nd question: are your smart phones and laptops surviving OK in the salt and humidity or are their life spans reduced by the elements?
@@MaxxOnAMission The solar and wind work great together and keep everything charged beautifully. Infrequently we need to turn the engine on in the evening if it's been a grey day to charge computers. We have no generator.
i still pretend i live on a boat. tho no1 considered space. so easily fixable. (well, not now.) cant believe this is the first tour, thats wild. _JC
@@MaxxOnAMission Our laptops and phones seem to age predictably out here, I think its because we use them constantly, unlike metal zips that corrode quickly if left unattended for any length of time.
Seems the Kitty really took over the boat, you are lucky she lets you stay.
The cat is very kind in that regard, she also lets us know if she is receptive to any forms of attention such as stroking and is not above waking us at 4.30am to receive those cuddles.

Wow, what a nice boat, it's not the fanciest boat around but it is certainly one of the best laid out boat tours that I have seen. I love the way it is all laid out and it has been a very good home for y'all for the last 5 years. I and everyone else have one very big burning question, what is hiding in Sir Ivan's forward space, I am sure we are all dying with curiosity. If I was in better health, I would be seriously looking into that very same boat. Thank you for another amazing video.

They’ve got to the point where they hear your voice at the beginning of the video and they both run and sit there waiting for the cat! keeps them very well entertained that’s for sure. It seems many others enjoy them too, although ours didn't particularly rock the world. Maybe less demand for older cats.

@TheCruisingKiwis we are planning to sail the world. Dependin on where we buy the boat starting in the Caribbean for a few years and then wherever the wind takes us! We need to get back to Australia to see family in the next few years, and it would be great to just take our home with us.
All the kids are grown and off our payroll so now it is our time to travel without them!
Hey there. It never occurred to me you guys had not done a tour of the boat. Must say I envy you your space, especially storage space. I have just booked to haul out on 1st November. Time to replace through hulls and redo anti foul. There's an embarrassment of barnacles and mussels under there right now!
Owen we may have more storage space but we have filled every inch it! Good luck with the haul out. Marina living can be hard on the antifoul.

Good questions Rob alas we didn't consider them ourselves. Our tank holds 300L of diesel and we also carry a further 300L in jerry cans. Rob has always told me we could motor all the way from NZ to Fiji if we had no wind using all of the above. We only use the AIS when we need it so you will probably find us around Singapore when we last had it switched on.
Rob you're probably just like my Nephew who found himself stuck at my place for months. He's very gifted and can cook almost anything but he's curiously challenged when it comes to the more advanced stuff, like, how, exactly do the dishes get clean again... he just can't work that out. But, eh, least we never went hungry 😂
lol yeah well I do actually do the dishes but it doesn't happen very often. Put it this way, it is noticed when I do.
PS did a feckin fantastic beef rendang last night so no dishes duties for a month, so says I.

Hi Guys! Tips (settle Rob, that's a "P") Almost jazz hands there Rachel @2:15.
Another long one, grab laptop & beverage/s; 🍻
Inverter - Check out "All-In-One" (AIO), simple plug & play. I have Ecgsolax MAX-10.2K, Multi Input/Output, ~$1k (prob less where u are). 10.2kWh may seem overkill but wont work/heat/fan-noise as hard vs lower not much diff in $, overhead if needed.
Blue Fans, salesmen, installers, etc, don't think much of these, justifying $'s spent, profits. You could setup 8 vs 1 Victron & still have change. Takes up much less real estate, cabling/losses.
People go on about cost vs how long something will last, by the time "if" needs replacing, like cell phones tech will be better, not missing out, still Way in front.
With duel output can pick cheaper appliances (incl 240v winch/water maker motors, depending cables), still run 12v gear, charge deep cells. PV, wind, gen, alt, shore input.
Batteries - light, small, largest output for $. Two options, cheapest, if u like, confident with diy, 48v (16s) eve cell build, next step is server rack. I prefer the latter, all done, plug & play, 10yr warranty.
Currently have 48/100Ah/5kWh ~$2.3k, upgrading to Gobel 48/280Ah/15kWh (GP-SR1-PC200-Basic) ~$4.8k (HK to AU shipping $1.2k!, should be much cheaper up where u are).
Again something the Blue Fans with bulky 3/4 full car/truck batteries turn their nose up at, i.e. shock vibration, what like the freight Co, plan on sailing up a corrugated road? Getting wet, only if boat sinks.
Set up correctly can still use/combine lead with lithium, but weight (give them to some Islanders). Plenty of options for research, YT, diysolarforum, cruisersforum.
Dielectric grease for all raw elec terminals, incl socket plugs, terminals (panel), instruments (seen them short/binned due to not having protection).
Heat shrinked Ferrule Crimping or blades is much better vs raw or soldered strand terminal clamp.
Check amps either end of cable runs for possible losses, issues. Pin testers for bare metal poked through insulation causes losses & green cancer, safety issues.
Also pays to inspect fridge, laptop (etc) air intakes/fans.
Gas - PITA, heavy bottles, real estate, refill issues. When able, induction cooktop, multi-convection oven/air fryer, wood for BBQ (from beach).
Wash, Isopropyl or metho mast track with brush, check for burs, incl runners, spray with silicon. Won't be as good as bearings, but much better/cheaper than current.
Plug anchor well drain hole, fill with fresh water, add vinegar/bicarb (or dish soap) mix. Helps reduce chain rusting. Spray or brush remaining deck chain with same mix, spray with lanolin (great multi-use product for salt environment).
WD40 is good for removing rust stain from surfaces (lots of uses, but not all).
Rear facing side hull vent in kite storage area. No deck hole/trip, helps with moisture/smell.
Now for Rachel, cause like most men, Rob "pretends" to suck at it.
Milk - 1kg bag of powdered, ~$10, makes 10ltrs "as needed", vs that bulky long-life + packaging/rubbish, at ~2.5+ the cost. Put some in cup for hot drinks, mix in bowl b4 adding cereal. When I want it cold, I mix with ice cubes.
Bread - I have a breville 9in1 multi cooker, makes yummy "fresh" smelling bread (fruit loafs, cakes, yogurt & more), as needed, in whatever style u like. My fav is multigrain sourdough with Italian herbs, garlic salt, chopped olives, virgin olive oil. 5kg pre-mixed ~$15, makes ~15 loaves.
Veg - Fresh is cool if near it, not to expensive, otherwise frozen, but freezer space can be an issue. Large plastic camping chest fridge/freezer (i.e. Kings 90lt), are great for storage, cold doesn't fall out when opened, can stack or use as seats.
If you can track down catering/restaurant suppliers/wholesalers, could save $ with bulk. Tip/store in plastic storage bins (with Silica pads). Vac seal, zip bags, etc. Get rid of paper/cardboard b4 leaving port.
You could also do compact microgreen tray setup, hydro in larger stackable plastic storage bins, worth the research time. Dehydrated egg (have u tried it?) & other dehydrated products.
Cat litter in stocking/sock, for bathroom & wardrobe moisture, odours.

Enjoyed your boat tour! Looks very comfortable! Im wondering where you all spend most of your time? Do you ever cross over Atlantic over to Caribbean? Or mostly in the Singapore area of the world? Do you plan ahead as to where you will be traveling?
We have a rough plan to sail to Europe at the end of this year and then an Atlantic late next year. All our plans are subject to change 😃

Could you explain those electrical dumpers please. Never heard of them. Thought the solar controller took care of that.
Sorry, I don't think I explained some of the components very well. Those dumpers are for the wind generators.

Thanks Swagman, Boats are subjective, It really depends what you are looking for, Zatara's boat is much bigger, we are 42ft they are 60ft, and they have many more bells and whistles than we do. Their boat also costs a whole lot more to buy and to maintain.
The boys 21, 19 and 16 now and Finn has just been rowing his socks off in his first international rowing competitions for the NZ Elite squad in Europe. V. interesting - thankyou. Cosy - seemed we were being a bit intrusive. Questions = 1. why is there access from the toilet to the kitchen?; 2. what are the gas cylinders in the helm area?; 3. is airconditioning an option?; 4. life raft? (and do you do emergency drills, fire etc?) and 5. where do keep spare fuel for the dinghy? Fin update?
And, 6. laundry (washing machine?)?😁
We do laundry on land or occassionally but hand at sea.
1. It's just the cavity area connects to most parts of the boat inside the shell. I suppose difficult bulkhead in bewteen.
2. They are spares.
3. Not as far as I know.
4. Oh yes forgot about that, it's aft alongside the tender - just sticks out a bit so can be easily released if nec.
5. Petrol is in the bow locker with the anchor chain.

Your boys are older but any advice to a family wanting to live on a catamaran full time and dealing with bedwetting. From what I know so far, making water uses a lot of electricity so doing laundry everyday may be impossible. Disposable nappies would also create a lot of trash and take up space. Am I overthinking this? Both my boys have nightly accidents. Thanks Cruising Kiwi Mom!
When the boys were smaller we had waterproof half sheets that you placed over their sheet at the level of wetting zone. They are much smaller than a sheet to wash.
I'm sure you have tried limiting water intake before bed and lifting them for toileting before you crash for the night.
There are are also those alarms that you can get which wake the child if they start to pee but we never tried that.
We want to know.😂
