Yep, that’s truly magnificent, this is alright but far too tame for my taste. I can’t stop watching the 74 midnight special tracks, that’s truly top of the game imo.
On this tour, Mike’s band opened the show and then Mike came on to play with Steely Dan for the last 1/4 of their set or so. I was at this concert in particular, and they were incredible.
They always remained close especially Mike and Don. He was only 21 originally in the Dan and even as a Doobie Mike kept going back recording on Gaucho in 1980 after he won Grammy's with the Doobie Brothers and later when the band split and Don was doing his solo live projects - Rock & Soul Review and Dukes of September... Mike was there.
Bro, I miss those years so hard. 1977 to the 80's. Doobie Brothers and a Bunch of great bandS and musicians, from soul by Motown to Rock by Mercury or SKA...
If you like what MM is doing here, check out the Live at the Rainbow in England 1974, MM rips a cool electric piano solo, Baxter kills , double drums from Hodder and Porcaro.
Not how it was originally done but this was very slick. See how they sneak it in while you aren't watching? Mike McDonald indeed. Two guys from New York can make such funky sounds that make you wish for more.
@@stevelangridge1755 Yes, she was a good adult-film star who got her name from that album cover, they say. She was from Maine and died mysteriously in Mexico.
Kieth Carlock started with this gig as an amazing drummer. He gets ( if even possible) better with each night ! Scary good ! Bravo Kieth ! Man your gooood! Cant wAit to hear whats next cousin!🥁😎Mr.Tom
Walter might be one of the best to ever pick up a guitar. Perfectly content to hide in the groove, but could burst out the luminosity of a supernova in a 32nd of a bar.
Was this the first single by major artists that had the Fword front and centre as a14year old it kinda thrilled me I hadn’t heard it in in my suburban Australian childhood
Donald Fagen apparently wanted to draft him as the lead singer as time went on, but Walter veto'ed it: he thought Don's voice was apparently distinctive enough on its own.
@@21kpatriot Michael McDonald did not sing on the record. Donald Fagen sand lead and Walter Becker, Jim Hodder and Sherlie Matthews sand background vocals.
I remember I was enjoying the view of Back Bay in Boston from a roof top deck and the drinks were going and the "we are so cool vibe" was going. Someone said, "I wonder what the rest of the people do?" This song jumped into my head. Never hung with those people again. Lol
can anybody tell me what year it was? I flew over from germany to listen to Steely Dan in 2005 and saw them open air in Holmdel with Michael, I did not knew before that he was singing that evening. It was great!!!
Okay that was great, really good. though lets be honest. Rick Derringer owns this song. But, boy the group of people did a great rental service to the early Dan classic. ;-) Okay MHO
So, one extra note was added to the bass line....I always thought that Steely, I mean Mr Dan, could NOT play THAT many notes...You know? He got his name from some kinda ICBM space mission probe??Swear to god that's what I heard...love, Darla
Is this your roundabout way letting us know that you were one of the poor saps that "thumbs downed" this video because you always have something negative to say even when everyone is having a good time? I feel bad for your friends. If you have any.
I'd understand this version if it was a cover band. But this is the original songwriters, I don't know why they'd want to stray so far from what made the song so great (and funky!). Their song I guess...
The 1973 Midnight Special performance is my absolute favorite!!
Yep, that’s truly magnificent, this is alright but far too tame for my taste. I can’t stop watching the 74 midnight special tracks, that’s truly top of the game imo.
I totally agree!!
That presentation was pure energy!
I wish I could give this a handful of thumbs ups
My rock idols are all looking fat 'n' happy.
On this tour, Mike’s band opened the show and then Mike came on to play with Steely Dan for the last 1/4 of their set or so. I was at this concert in particular, and they were incredible.
I was at the Merriweather show (Columbia, MD), and was blown away.
Was this in Charlotte NC? I saw this tour there.
Was there. Great show
He's a fixture of Steely in their prime! And that 1974 tour is freaking 🔥💯!!!
They always remained close especially Mike and Don. I had no idea that I needed to watch this. Brilliant!
Same here...just "popped" into my head! Must've been my subconscious speaking to me...and Michael McDonald to boot!
Bro, I miss those years so hard. 1977 to the 80's. Doobie Brothers and a Bunch of great bandS and musicians, from soul by Motown to Rock by Mercury or SKA...
Oh yeah great 👍 music back then right
You got that right!!!!!
That is so badass solid badass 💪🙏🔥🐐the GOAT 🐐 THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME
I like it, too. But who is it?
What a voice, love him!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. McDonald a few years back. First time I ever heard the term "Yacht Rock" from the man himself.
I don't like the phrase. Anyway the word is Yatch! I don't care what the dictionary says!
What a beautiful version of one of my favorite songs
Yay so cool 😊👍💜🇦🇺

Agreed. Got to see him touring with Steely Dan a few years ago. Perfection. 💯
One of their best songs! (Along with "The Royal scam" and "Pretzel Logic" and "Don't take me alive.")
Whoa! We are of like minds! The Royal Scam and Pretzel Logic! My also is Your Goldteeth Two.
Interesting. Love Dan, but those songs did not float my boat bar Don't Take Me Alive. That was the door to the even better Dan of the late 70s.
Love my old school school
Aja!

Wow, amazing!
That voice! LOVE Michael and Steely ❤️

Funky James Brown spin on Show biz Kids... Frickin awesome and Micheal McDonald is vocal beast
one of favorites. BOTH
Michael McDonald kind of rocks man 😂😂😂
As usual ... Flawless!
Jon Herrington, Michael McDonald, Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, etc... sheeeeeeeeit!
and yeah, Carolyn... be still my heart...
A more soulful Mike rendition of this classic. Love it.
Fantastic
Walter might be one of the best to ever pick up a guitar. Perfectly content to hide in the groove, but could burst out the luminosity of a supernova in a 32nd of a bar.
That's why he's the Professor. RIP teach
I saw that tour- Charlotte, August 06. Killer. The best was SD at the Biltmore Mansion and Estates in Asheville. Beautiful
Love it!!! Thanks for sharing...
Love it...8/2024 ❤🎉
Amazing stuff and music
Michael is absolutely great.....but when you listen to the steely Dan original, it's easy to see how truly dynamite they were....
Totally agree. The original was next level.
I tottaly agree
the 1974 memphis live version of this song featuring mike on lead vocals is absolute fire, better than the original
Nothing beats the original. Michael wasn't part of Steely Dan when they recorded the original.
If he's good enough for Donald and Walter then he's good enough for me!
Great video, thanks for putting it up. Some time ago though; the brilliant Keith Carlock still on Yamaha drums before changing to Gretsch.
One of my favorites!!
What a voice
Best version without a doubt.
"The Washington Zoo"...you said it brother!
So true haha
Mr.Keith Carlock is a badass genius drummer
I wish Lou Reed had covered this. It's only one chord, so should be right up his alley.
Best dam band
Real music
Terrific!
Oh yeah!
New Subscriber as of few mins ago🤙🎉

SD and Mc ..
Compliment- In being a SD fan since '80s..
Rare Footage 🤙
Very cool!
Like Michael Mcdonald interpretation of the song
It's not just his interpretation, He sang on the original.
Just a perfect interpretation. Lost wages.
@@KellyNealKeene swing and a miss, he most certainly sang backup on bad sneakers

This. Is. So. Cool. Love it!
Il a participé à leurs disques.
C'est de façon naturelle qu'il chante avec eux.
Oh he look so much better bigger then med like a man man w. O. W. I can listen to him all day an nite Michael u got it.
Go Walter!
I was wondering if he was gonna use the F bomb here. Looks like he just waited for the chorus singers to do it for him lmao
Better then the original its because the great vocals from Michael Mc Donald and the perfect backup singers 😊
Sorry, no way.
Ray Charles in another color. Fabulous.
his has a recognizable voice .coming from toto i'll be over you
This is CRAZY!!!!!!!
Nice
Ah yes, my favorite line. So snarky...they said it twice.
Nice, Mike.
Great song. Michael McDonald looks like he literally just stepped off a yacht.
😮👍🙂‼️
I saw this tour. Sugartooth McDan Tour it was called. Anyone know what venue this show was at?
Name of music?
A good version, but I missed Derringer's slide...
Fagan's punch in the facen to music producers!
can anybody tell me what year it was? I flew over from germany to listen to Steely Dan in 2005 and saw them open air in Holmdel with Michael, I did not knew before that he was singing that evening. It was great!!!
This is so fuckin' cool.......
This version pales in comparison to the 1973 Midnight Special of the same song.
Funky!!!!!!!
Who is the black lady singing back up? She’s incredible!
Dyn-O-Mite!
Michael looks like a rock version of Jay Leno :)
Okay that was great, really good. though lets be honest. Rick Derringer owns this song. But, boy the group of people did a great rental service to the early Dan classic. ;-) Okay MHO
when I clicked on this, I was hoping for RD.
This song is almost too cool…almost!
Them's some dads.
Mike's voice is wrong for this song, he's very soulful, you need that Fagan sneer
THIS VERSION MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL...SPECIALLY THE BASS
It just ISN'T
What's the singers name who's busy with her hands!
The truly fab Carolyn Leonhart. Her brother played horn in the band
So, one extra note was added to the bass line....I always thought that Steely, I mean Mr Dan, could NOT play THAT many notes...You know? He got his name from some kinda ICBM space mission probe??Swear to god that's what I heard...love, Darla

Where’s Donald? I miss him🤔
I LOVE Michael McDonald..and how COOL he is to not say the "F" word😎👌✝️
Michael was not a part of the band when they recorded this. Not his vocal.
I'd understand this version if it was a cover band. But this is the original songwriters, I don't know why they'd want to stray so far from what made the song so great (and funky!). Their song I guess...
You're kidding, right? Different lead vocalist, different melody, different guitar hook, different guitar solo. Come on man...
That's what original artists do.
Where's Fagen?
Are u deaf & blind
And the winner of the George Lucas look alike contest goes to……
Must be a kid.
This is the neutered version.
Well, that was it! So bad!
Donald Fagen unavailable?? RIP Walter Becker...
he's in this. See him at 4:01
Lost wages mama.
No disrespect to Michael, but I miss Rick Derringer's slide guitar, and the rawness and anger of the original. Just saying.
If you know the original, this is hard to listen to. The Dan are best in studio. McDonald's voice misses the special Donald Fagan style.
respect to all involved, but this didn't work for me...
Steely Dan........ Not your Granpa's Rock /Jazz band!!!!
You think dude could have dressed better. Presumably he knew he was going to be on stage that night.
Presumably he doesn't care
He doesn't have to dress ANY kind of way!!!! He's awesome no matter what!
Ever since he fought a balrog and became Michael McDonald the White, Mike's looked a lot like Colonel Sanders.
That's BRILLIANT!
This is just not the same song, no matter how funked up, jazzed up.
Agree - they lost the lilt & rhythm that make the orig. my fave SD track
They need a little Rick Derringer.
Hmm, didn't like that version, they kind of zombified it.
Terrible rendition. Missing the incredible continuous backup vocals and the beginning to end guitar solo.
This is terrible
Michael has a dynamite voice! Hope he discovers Weight Watchers.
Hope you discover one millimeter of the talent and success he has in life!
