      Yep, that’s truly magnificent, this is alright but far too tame for my taste. I can’t stop watching the 74 midnight special tracks, that’s truly top of the game imo.

    On this tour, Mike’s band opened the show and then Mike came on to play with Steely Dan for the last 1/4 of their set or so. I was at this concert in particular, and they were incredible.

      They always remained close especially Mike and Don. He was only 21 originally in the Dan and even as a Doobie Mike kept going back recording on Gaucho in 1980 after he won Grammy's with the Doobie Brothers and later when the band split and Don was doing his solo live projects - Rock & Soul Review and Dukes of September... Mike was there.

    I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. McDonald a few years back. First time I ever heard the term "Yacht Rock" from the man himself.

    Saw Fagan, McDonald and Boz Scaggs, "Boy's of Summer" : Santa Barbara County Bowl a few years back... like this, an incredible melding of voices, lyrics and instruments !

    Not how it was originally done but this was very slick. See how they sneak it in while you aren't watching? Mike McDonald indeed. Two guys from New York can make such funky sounds that make you wish for more.

      Interesting. Love Dan, but those songs did not float my boat bar Don't Take Me Alive. That was the door to the even better Dan of the late 70s.

    Walter might be one of the best to ever pick up a guitar. Perfectly content to hide in the groove, but could burst out the luminosity of a supernova in a 32nd of a bar.

    I remember I was enjoying the view of Back Bay in Boston from a roof top deck and the drinks were going and the "we are so cool vibe" was going. Someone said, "I wonder what the rest of the people do?" This song jumped into my head. Never hung with those people again. Lol

      Donald Fagen apparently wanted to draft him as the lead singer as time went on, but Walter veto'ed it: he thought Don's voice was apparently distinctive enough on its own.

    Best version is from the ‘74 tour at The Rainbow in London. It’s light years better than the studio version, SD was a very underrated live act.

    can anybody tell me what year it was? I flew over from germany to listen to Steely Dan in 2005 and saw them open air in Holmdel with Michael, I did not knew before that he was singing that evening. It was great!!!

    If you know the original, this is hard to listen to. The Dan are best in studio. McDonald's voice misses the special Donald Fagan style.

    I'd understand this version if it was a cover band. But this is the original songwriters, I don't know why they'd want to stray so far from what made the song so great (and funky!). Their song I guess...
