"Cornwallis too, when he approached Virginia's old dominion, thought he'd soon her conquered be as was the North's opinion.
    Yankee Doodle keep it up,
    Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step
And with the girls be handy.
But our allies to his surprise
    The Chesapeake had entered,
Now too late he's caused his fate
    And wished he'd never entered!
    Yankee Doodle keep it up,
    Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step
And with the girls be handy."

It was a slur on Americans for having no fashion sense or refined character. Basically a jibe at them being a nation of undignified savages but you are right it turned against them. I remember reading up on it when I heard Jimmy Cagney sing it with pride and thought what strange lyrics. Look forward to your next video.

No a Dandy in those days in England was a homosexual..... they said you went to town riding on a pony because you wasn't man enough to ride on horses... and the part about the feather in his hat they we're saying not only were you a homosexual but you was a flaming homosexual who wasn't trying to hide it.....
