Great review and guide to this deck! I usually agonize over an embarrassing period of time deciding whether I'm going to get a deck that captures my attention, but I bought this one right away. I could feel just how powerful it is. I still haven't used it but I intend to use it in my year ahead spread on New Year and to work with it more in 2020.
My ex (with whom I'm still friends) just started his tarot journey and decided to get the Wild Unknown Tarot as his first deck. I love the deck, have had it for years, and have used it heavily at times, but hadn't used it for a while... and when he started sending me pictures of his spreads, I was shocked just how dark the deck is. I'd remembered it as being a more neutral deck but now I see that it's a lot more shadowy than I remembered. It's interesting that this is part of Kim Krans' style and that her relatively dark deck has become so popular in a market that tends to favor more positive or light-filled decks. I think this archetypes deck is actually even more challenging, but for that reason has the potential to be even more powerful and cathartic.
I realize looking at the decks I tend to go for that I prefer decks that are a little provocative or confrontational, as I personally do a lot of shadow work with tarot. I love what you said about how some of the jarring juxtapositions within or across cards can bring up some interesting insights about your reaction to the cards. As much as I love art that is simply beautiful, my favorite art uses just that kind of clever juxtaposition to shock you into awareness of something you didn't see before.
And damn, Kim Krans is a great writer! I think that makes a huge difference with how essential a guidebook is. My favorite little white book is the one that comes with the Spolia Tarot, which isn't surprising as Jessa Crispin is a writer by trade. She packs a lot of insight into those short little passages on each card, just as Kim Krans packs a whole lot of insight and emotional punch into this guidebook!

I one hundred percent get it! I am the type of person who goes towards darker and more serious decks most of the time. I love a deck that I can dive into on an emotional and psychological level. I like decks that make me feel some thing even though I don’t want to. That kind of jar me into paying attention. You add in a fantastically written guide book and I am so down! I’m definitely going to have to check out this Spolia tarot!! I guess I never really thought of the wild unknown as such a dark deck, but thinking about it- you are so right!!

@@DaniMystic Yes! I sometimes turn to tarot for fun but it's more often when I'm really searching emotionally and those intense decks hit the spot.
The Spolia Tarot is my favorite deck I've used this year! Probably in my top five all-time decks now. It's based off of the Minchiate deck and has additional cards for each sign of the zodiac and for the four elements. Even if you're not big into astrology (I'm not, but I'm trying to learn more for 2020), the energies of those cards definitely add something to readings. At 94 cards it is a bit of a beast to shuffle though lol. It's a funky collage deck which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea but I love it. It's both dark and funny (and sarcastic), which is totally my jam and I think might be yours too!

This seems truly intimidating yet at the same time really inviting for real life terms (I think) you made me want it!

    • @DaniMystic

It is confronting in a lot of ways, but I think that the way it is structured and the energies included are the raw and real. You hit it on the nose, something that has real life terms!

Loved this walkthrough and the deep dive into The Cave. The image my mind flashed on was Luke Skywalker's vision in the cave on Dagobah. That's a strong sign to me that I would work well with this deck. Thanks, Dani! 💜☮️

I really do have a great appreciation for this deck. It fills a niche that no other deck does for me!

Ive been hesitating on this deck, because of the "disjointed" images, but now you have me wanting it.

    • @DaniMystic

It really surprised me how well they fit into my readings. I feel like the disjointedness serves a purpose I did not expect-it is almost like confronting something that makes you uncomfortable.

I was unsure with the general style, however, the content is actually very good. It's a mix of common and uncommon card concepts. She writes from different angles for each card which is very nice as I feel everyone will connect with a different aspect. My only significant gripe is how poorly they shuffle. I'm having to be creative with how I choose cards. I just find they 'stick' together. Overall I'm pleasantly surprised with this one. ... Blessings Dani x

I feel like the more I shuffle the easier they get, although round decks for me are just really awkward to shuffle in general. Sometimes when I feel like they “stick” and I can’t get a good shuffle, I create 3 or 4 smaller piles and shuffle them before bringing them back together! Many blessings ♥️

@@DaniMystic Oh good. I was wondering if more shuffling would make them worse. There's hope! x

It’s a surprising one! I love Kim Krans’ art, so I knew that wouldn’t be an issue, but it really is a unique deck that is unlike anything I have!

This would actually be a great deck for that. Choosing a card, reading a passage, meditate on it for the day.
