Paul's first wife actually took the rap once for his pot when they were pulled over in Los Angeles on a traffic violation. All their kids were in the car as well, and he'd already been arrested a few times and would have lost his Visa if arrested again. He never learned his lesson, constantly hauling his stash everywhere he went, much like Keith Richard's, who endlessly tried to get through customs with heron, illegal handguns, syringes, needles and pills....he must hold the record for his hundreds of brushes with the law. My favorite Keith story was when he spent the night with the Dole Pineapple Kings daughter, then rushed off to the Hawaiian airport with stuff in his luggage, got caught and was told he'd be put away for life. His one phone call was to Mr. Dole, and the man talked for 2 minutes to the captain, who, white as a sheet, hung up and tore up the charge sheet, handed him his drugs BACK, and told him to stay away from Hawaii from now on...
It was actually saxophonist Bobby Keyes who had spent the evening with Mr. Doles daughter and who made the call, but yes, great story. One of the many things I respect about Keith is that, despite his reputation for debauchery and decadence, he wasn't a womanizer. In fact, especially considering his band mate and fellow "glimmer twin" Mick Jagger, he was faithful to the women in his life. He's been with the same woman for approximately 40 years with not even gossip or a tabloid article accusing him of sluttery, let alone a credible account. That's pretty admirable. It's not impossible. I spent 20 years as a clandestine, relatively functioning junkie and would have never considered cheating on my girlfriend or wife. I'm not perfect, by far, but I could never betray my best friend, even when I was presented with the opportunity. I could foolishly rationalize my addiction, but I could never rationalize hurting someone who I absolutely loved.

Paul McCartney said after the Tokyo arrest, that those nine days in jail, was at the time the longest he had been away from Linda.
