About Steven Universe:

I know this isn't a hot take or anything, but I cannot emphasize how much Pearl needed a therapist in this show

I really like this particular line, because it betrays the underlying sinister tones of what Pearl is trying to teach Connie to become. Just one mistake could give Connie serious injuries, but Pearl isn't telling her to focus on the danger she's putting herself in-she's telling her to focus on what could happen to Steven if she fails. What happens to Connie isn't important: what happens to _Steven_ is.

@@MysteryStudioYT everyone interprets it differently but i’m assuming in the song that connie represents pearl (piano). the song, obviously in pearls perspective; is about protecting steven and how important he is. Even though she isn’t really talking about steven, and more so is thinking of rose in his place. After all steven is roses child and she’s mentioned before that she sees a lot of her in him. Therefore the violin ends up representing rose (or steven as the coverup) “do it for her, that is to say you’ll do it for him”.

the piano for pearl with the viola/violin for rose was genius. connie's supposed to be protecting steven (which would imply that there should be uke in this song), but the strings are there (faintly) bc rose is the real motivation for the song. i love the music in steven universe sm.
This song still gives me chills because I've been a child who was traumatized by someone else trying to deal w their trauma in what felt like a healthy way but wasn't. I wish this song had been interpreted that way right off the bat, as a warning to check yourself before you dump your trauma onto the children around you.
Pearl keeps forgetting that Connie is not a pearl and she can't reform if she's hurt and the fact that she brainwashed connie to be a knight and made her believe she was worthless and only Steven matters all this trauma protrays in the Future episodes where you can see them falling appart from the difference between them and how they can't overcome it because petal trained them to bare the pain not overcome it like she did.
Something I absolutely love about this song, is that if you listen closely at 1:11, you can hear a few small notes from The Sunlit Garden play. It's one of the big songs from an anime called Revolutionary Girl Utena. That anime was actually a strong influence for Rebecca Sugar when making Steven Universe.
I actually grew up watching Utena, and when I heard this song for the first time, I immediately recognized the notes. Then I looked up the song online hoping I wasn't crazy. Heck, this whole scene could kinda count as an Utena reference with the swordfighting. There's even a shot in the episode where one of Pearl's clones mirrors the same pose Utena makes before striking her opponent!🙂

thats how ive always felt,i fought back then to protect and and now that that person is out, I fight now so my siblings and mom can be ok when i leave,when i was younger and heard this song it resonated different but now that im about to go to college it resonates in the sense that once im gone they will be ok and I know i was able to make some differences
