First time viewer, just stumbled across your video. I'm a big fan of 13th Age and it's always nice to see it get attention.
I really like how the system does the defenses the add the 2nd highest is odd at first but it prevents any one stat from being a god stat. (Like dexterity in 5e) And I love the AC being tied to class rather then what you're wearing because it shuts down shenanigans such as certain players trying to find ways for their wizard to wear heavy armor to get more AC. The weapon dice being tied to class is nice too, I actually just treat the weapon as flavor and tell players to take the damage die that's highest for their class and flavor your weapon whatever you want want to use daggers and do D8 damage? That's cool, the only mechanical choice you need to make for your weapon is 1 handed or 2 handed but that's just me.
For the Icons I find it best to compare them to figures like Galadriel, Sauron, Saruman or Elrond from Tolkien's work in terms of how important they are it tends to give a good idea to most how big a deal they are meant to be.
It might be worth it to mention that for those that have trouble getting their heads around the Icon relationships that they're more like a faction system rather then a reflection of a personal relationship with the Icon. Most 13th Age tables handle it like that, I often see GMs try 13th Age and comeback that the Icon system feels contrived because they need to make up reasons for the Emperor to randomly show up in a forest to talk to the player ther have a relationship with. Everyone in the community then needs to explain that it is contrived because they're thinking about it wrong, having a relationship with an Icon doesn't necessarily mean they know the Icon personally, the Icon might not have ever even heard their name before. It means they are associated with the Icon's faction so you don't meet the Emperor randomly in the woods you meet someone from thier faction. It seems like common sense but it's amazing how often people don't grasp that.
Anyway I'm rambling, I'll check out your next videos too. Oh and are you aware they are working on 13th Age 2nd Edition? It's still in playtesting and it's going slow but they're working on it. Though it's really more like 1.5, they want to keep it backward compatible so they are mostly tweaking some math and trying to refine some systems. (The Icon system is one getting some adjustments because they found that it's one that a lot of players and GMs get tripped up on.)

While it’s not my personal favorite, it’s still criminal that 13th Age doesn’t get enough love in the “D&D derivative” niche.

Looking forward to playing this! The Icons are such a cool concept, especially with how they tie into character creation.

Before anyone tries to say 13th Age stole from D&D, 13th Age came out a full year before 5E. 13th Age did it first.

13th Age was designed by Rob Heinsoo (lead designer of Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition) and Jonathan Tweet (lead designer of D&D 3rd Edition) and published by Pelgrane Press. They basically designed the game that D&D 4th Edition should have been, i.e. they learned from D&D 4th. D&D 4th Ed. has some good ideas and some bad ones basically they lifted most of the better ideas from 4th and ditched the bad ones.

@@TeganJGaming I think my reply got stuck in a filter, but his latest video had a segment on your 5e defense video.

That looks pretty quick, especially if you have a character concept in mind.

Yeah it was fairly straight forward, the only thing that tripped me up a bit was how armor's handled

Unless I missed it, you forgot to choose a feat.

You're right completely forgot to mention the additional feat on video. I ended up picking improved initiative for Qren
