I came to Arlington Cemetery for the first time in 2010 and am thankful to have seen the original Eternal Flame.
My eyes still fill with tears remembering this horrible tragedy. I was 15 at the time. It is still so vivid in my mind. Every terrible detail. May the soul of Pres. Kennedy rest in heavenly peace.
Sorry, but the pure aesthetic of the flame coming directly out of the 'stone' was much preferable to this, which resembles a cigarette lighter or other crude device. Very disappointing.

I hope the original components for the eternal flame were saved....after all, they were the very first from 1963. Should be at the Smithsonian or something.....RIP JFK
Why? They are just bits of pipe. It wasn’t the first eternal flame by far.
i think they put the original eternal flame in the National Museum of Funeral History in Houston, TX
@@cheeseff2106 The original was basically a luau lamp or a tiki torch type. The Army Corps of Engineers got word that Jackie Kennedy wanted an eternal flame and they had about 24hrs to get it done.

It's nice that you can actually see the behind-the-scenes footage of their work and what all this entailed. I think the new flame looks great and hopefully the collar that surrounds the torch will help keep the black soot off the stone.
I think it looks upside down. Holes should be on top.

Like they'd have a updated, NASA - LIKE, eternal flame made instead of this butane lighter device. The Kennedy family should be outraged at this.

They said the started the new flame from the old one, they removed, so where is it shown they lit up the new eternal flame from a source from the old original flame ?
On the other side of the fence they erected a temporary flame from the original eternal flame so the flame never went out there's a video showing the transfer of flame.
The flame has gone out and been relit numerous times.

Great video of the flame installation and the inner workings of the tomb. What problems did you encounter in the upgrade? I know it took longer to replace than the original estimate so was just curious.

Brushed stainless steel gas nozzle looks simply terrible. Industrial as it can get. But, then, anybody who'd give a damn are pretty much all dead now.... Jackie would NOT have approved.

And with his back he is out on a little boat that surely did not help even tho he saved his men.
