THIS IS WONDERFUL! Thank you both. This ceremony and the 'Parasite' ceremony are my two top favorites. Would love to see more videos like this. Stay safe and well!
Loved this video. The Parasite comparison is so apt. Silence of the lambs is such an enduring masterpiece andd truly worthy of best picture. Recently got to see it at a special screening and was just floored all over again. I still think they snubbed Silence of the Lambs for best score and cinematography.
In the 1970's, I had to sneak down the hall to take a peek at the shower scene in "Psycho" during the AFI Alfred Hitchcock tribute- very limited opportunities to see "not for kids" content in the pre VCR era.
This was awesome! So much so I went back and watched all of Billy's monologues and had 3 thoughts; 1. You can tell the actors with no sense of humor by the sheer disdain they had for musical numbers 😂 2. It has to be incredibly daunting for anyone else to live up to this comparison. Even though some jokes didn't land & and some aged poorly, the overall tone each time was 'Come on, let's have some fun! ' and he always delivered. 3. Who could possibly come close to duplicating that humor+musical talent? Think about how great it could have been this year if they hid the name of the host until the ceremony began - the curtains opened - and it was just Bo Burnham sitting at the piano singing his own parodies of the nominees? Ah, the missed opportunity. Maybe next year.
I love Joyce 👑 and that she watched SOTL at age six. So fun looking back at Oscar’s golden age. Please keep this up. I’ll take these weekly videos in lieu of the Joyce/Christopher podcast. ❤️🎞🎬🍿🏆
Fried Green Tomatoes probably would have been the 10th nominee that year. Huge box office hit, baity-ish material, screenplay + acting nominations. Europa Europa had big chances as well though, it got a screenplay nomination, and it's very baity, being about a Jewish boy trying to survive during WWII. Maybe the foreign language aspect would have held it back, or maybe both of those could get in and The Fisher King would be the surprise snub, a film that was possibly too "weird" and ultimately lacking in passion from voters for the Best Picture category. I don't think Terminator 2 was a lock either though, it could have been held down as a popcorn movie and not taken seriously enough.
Thank You Joyce for stating that the Academy in the 90s wasn't ashamed of the movies they nominated. They also were slightly less pretentious back then. No wonder why the ceremony today is so boring. They actually had fun back then
You guys are also highlighting the lack of pure movie stars today which a big reason I think the Oscars are not what it used to be. It was all about the glam and mystery back then. Now everyone is overexposed and I don't see one star from Gen Z that can string off a series of box office hits Like Leo DiCaprio or Will Smith in his time .

This was great! This was my first full Oscar Ceremony too.

Do you think either Geena Davis or Susan Sarandon would've went Supporting, would either of them had won?

Michelle Pfeiffer for Frankie and Johnny should've been nominated
You forgot Ted Levine when mentioning actors who SHOULD have been nominated for supporting actor.
I agree. He was great.
Thanks, hope to see more retrospectives

Boyz n the Hood, Thelma & Louise snubbed from Best Picture noms!
Laurence Fishburne also snubbed!
oh this is amazing keep em coming !!!!!!
this was great!
The fact that you guys are starting with The Silence of the Lambs year 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I would nominate Ted Levine for Silence of the Lambs and give him the win. Also, the Bugsy actors and Tommy Lee Jones were better than Palance, IMO
Luise Rainer beats Jodie Foster as the youngest to win two Best Actress Oscars, but almost everyone forgets about poor Luise.
I still think Anthony Hopkins should've went supporting.
