This is a very cool device! I have the Amazon Echo and Amazon Dot, but I think I'd get this for the kitchen for recipes, video calls, and watching movies while cooking.

It's big for two main reasons - to fit ina decent speaker which is considerably better than any tablet, and to also make it sturdy enough to not knock over when its on the worktop 24/7 and not in your hand

Hopefully you'll realize there are twin speakers in the base of the Echo Show. Put two Google Home speakers on their sides and place them next to the Show. Then you can compare booties.

I have four Echos in my house and I am so glad they added the intercom feature. I can drop in and talk to my roommate in another room. I have been waiting for that feature ever since getting the Echo. I tested it out just this morning 6/29/17 for the first time. It works and you don't need an Echo Show to use it. I don't know if I am ready to plop down that much money on a device but then again. The only way I would get one is if my parents and my sister were to get one too. Doubt they would buy it. I know my sister won't. I am the real techie in my family. I bought my parents a Echo Dot but they hardly use it. But maybe they would use the Show more. We shall see. I want to see more review videos before I go there.

How do I contact people that don't have an Echo Show? Will they have to download an app and is the app free? I can't make all my friends download & pay for apps if I want to use this thing.
It said something about an app for phones but idk if its free or how well it works.
You will need the Alexa app which is completely free. You can use the Alexa calling feature to call friends who have the Alexa app on their smartphone or tablet. Your friends won't necessarily need an Echo Show to video chat with you as I understand it, though I could be wrong of course.

I agree with your point about multiple assistants. some people on RUclips use Alexa. Google home and siri and it would annoy me so much remmeberin what does what and the different voices and names.

Not sure why you expected it to look like a tablet. You can't have good audio in a tablet sized device. There has to be space for speakers and physics says you need larger speakers for bass response.
That thing is kinda cool!
