Yeah but it actually ships with content? Valorant came out with 3 maps and 6 heroes and 2 modes. OW came out with 7 maps and how many heroes? Not 16. Concord ships with 6 game modes, 12 maps and 16 characters. It's huge content that I'll always prefer over F2P. F2P completely killed quality in MP games.
Which means it also requires PS+ subscription, unlike all of its main competitors. The only way for this game to have a somewhat decent player base on consoles is including it on PS+ catalog day one. Like they did with Destruction Allstars (remember that banger, guys? anyone?) or Foamstars (crickets...)

The main problem is that there seems to be nothing about this game that stands out. Nowhere you go, "oh that is a cool mechanic I have not seen before, I have to try this".
I would need to either play or watch abilities breakdowns to be sure but so far a lot of the abilities I saw look genuinely interesting. Gameplay wise it looks really good. What's holding it back for me is the live service aspect and it's art direction not being quite there yet.

The characters kinda look like people in costumes. Maybe a little TOO realistic. Some "hero shooters" like Overwatch have a distinct silhouette and striking design (or some primary color you can associate the character with) that lets the opponent know at a glance who they're facing. Other than a few I'm seeing, all these guys just look like, well, people at a glance. Sure, in the real world, a shooter is just somebody with a gun and you might not know what they're doing until it's too late, but this is a video game and visual shorthand is needed for ease of play.
Silhouettes are important in hero shooters, look at TF2 - at a glance you can tell what character you're shooting at, even if they're wearing 50 million cosmetics
Im not so much concerned with the gameplay implications, but I do agree that the character designs are very boring and lack personality. "People in costumes" is a pretty good summary, they dont look like individual unique characters.. They just look like people.
As someone who doesn’t really play these kinds of games, I will say that OverWatch, League of Legends and even Apex Legends to an extent have good character designs. At worse, there’s the ODD character who looks generic. Here… everyone does
Specifically for hero shooters, you need to get some inkling of the person you're fighting at a glance. Like COD, who cares, every operator has access to everything in that game before you head into a match. But every kit for a hero shooter character is different. If the sniper looks the same as the close-quarters brawler, it's just a recipe for confusion.
Soooooo, THIS is why we heard Sonys big bombastic plans of live service games and going “all in” blew up in their face. I think they could see the writing on the wall. In all honesty, Sony needs to stick to what they are good at and triple down on AAA singleplayer games, and let Bungie do their thing since they are proven with Destiny. This is 5 years to late.
The scary thing is that this is one of the 6 out of 12 live service games that Sony thinks is good enough to go ahead, which makes you wonder how dogshit games like that live service TLOU must have been.

The major problem is the lack of any sort of thematic cohesion. None of these characters look like they actually belong together. From the alien pink haired girl to space bun galore. It's all a mess of themes with no unifying style or theme. Overwatch has this same problem, though there is still some cohesion. some characters are of the same crew. (Talon, Overwatch, Vishkar). Some are individual mercenaries of some caliber. They do recognize one another in some shape or form so it doesn't feel too weird. The characters are built around their combat style and talents. Some of Concord's characters.. if not majority of them just don't have anything that tells you enough about what they excel at. What does pink haired alien girl tells you when you look at her? How about the Prince-wannabe Mcree? Only the tank characters really scream "I'm a bullet sponge".

The transition from matchmaking to actually landing in the arena gives you *just* about enough time to take a dump, fulfil your Duolingo lesson for the day, ponder your terrible life choices before realising being sat on the toilet's actually quite relaxing, wipe thoroughly, finish up, grab a beer and jump in!

Many large companies in entertainment operate for months on losses so they "need" those loans to not go into the red while working on their next project. Under US tax law, companies can write off losses in their taxes. and just like that, you have a cobra problem (more literally, perverse incentive). Rather than trying to make a GOOD game that MIGHT be successful on the market, you can make an absolutely terrible game, do a fucking shit job marketing it, ensure you hire the most pathetic (cheap) dev team that hate gamers; utterly ensuring the game will fail... Now you the game company can just churn out mediocre garbage, subsisting on didn't earn it loans, and tax writ offs... it's literally easier to make shit, ensure it fails, and cash out on your taxes than it is to try to make something good.

You can go for a realistic artstyle and still be able to make interesting characters (look at the characters from paragon for examlple) The issue here are the designs themselves. Theres literally nothing that tells you about who the characters are and their personality. The most important thing for characters is the silohuette and here it doesnt tell you anything about them because they all look alike
You need to make it as easy as possible to on-board people with stuff like this. Making it free to play with reasonable cosmetic transactions is a good way to go. Lose a bit of money short term for more success later

Orisa in overwatch has 1500 effective health when using fortify. Mcree does 70 per damage with a 6 shooter. 70 x 6 is 420, mcree would take 3 mags and fortify negates headshot damage headshots.

Yeah, he said that and I was just baffled. The art direction, both how the game is literally rendered and also the artistic choices for the aesthetic, looks bland at best and offputting at worst. My eyes aren't bleeding in my sockets, but I do indeed seriously doubt the art direction.
16:32 let me think of a number of different combo of weapon ideas you could give in order to make unique archetypes. Cassidy change up idea; trick shots, switch out different ammo types to perform different shot types to become a Utility/ DPS or even shoot to make temp cover. Windowmaker change up; Instead of a grappling hook give her the following; 1. Teleporter that allows her to have a point a to point b 2. A rope and hook you have to throw, allowing you to traverse only based on where you climb and make your own sniping points 3. Make a structure below you, making your own sniping nest 4. Super jump 5. Double jump 6. Flight BUT can't snipe while flying Tracer change up; 1. Shotgun like the scout from TF2 2. Needle gun 3. Daggers 4. Energy cannon like Megaman Oh wow that wasn't hard to do now was it. That took me like what less than 5 minutes to think of all of these changes? If you can't think of any creative ideas and only steal from existing archetypes then you might just need to quit being a game designer all together. 16:49 TF2 was able to come up with unique combination of heroes with guns. Stop licking the sack of the game and just accept the fact the team behind this game aren't all that creative.

These character designs... i just can't. There's like three or four that are somewhat "ok" but even then that would just be me picking them because all the other alternatives are WAY worse.
*I never had played a Hero Shooter before* I liked the game, the graphics are great and i enjoyed the guns and diferent types of gameplay. I don't like all the characters designs, but there are 16 options, i think it's ok to dislike some of them. And i don't know how to explain but, this game looks like garbage on videos and gameplays, playing it, feels much better.
I tried it last night. It wants to focus on Overwatch style gameplay, where teams group up most of the time (for healing & DPS). But on Arena style maps (not lane maps)... So it doesn't flow well. It'll be DOA imo...
It has characters that prioritise support, like healing others, focusing on team play & no health regen. Just to name a few. It has A LOT of similarities with Overwatch. It merges Overwatch elements with Arena shooters, and it fails at it...

I am a freelance designer and I think the art style is great and it has amazing animations with a unique colour scheme that not many games dare to use. Still wouldn't pay to play something like that though.

I honestly could not give two shits about these types of games. The trailer was cool, when I thought it was a single player game, or even co-op. But once i realized what it was, my interest went out the window, as it did for all my friends in the group chat that were talking about the reveal.
The CGI trailer intrigued because it looked like a GotG and Star Wars mix which are my two favourite franchises of all time and i thought it would be a coop game. Then they showed the gameplay and immediately I lost interest
I remember a conversation about art design that when you have to broad of a concept and a consistent logic you can easily lack identity. Startreak is a great example as it’s alien deign is humans with funny head features, not the most specific but it works well enough. Like marvel this game seems to drawn it inspiration with from a lot of different places without much logic as to why they all exist together.

The major problem is the lack of any sort of thematic cohesion. None of these characters look like they actually belong together. From the alien pink haired girl to space bun galore. It's all a mess of themes with no unifying style or theme.
Overwatch has this same problem, though there is still some cohesion. some characters are of the same crew. (Talon, Overwatch, Vishkar). Some are individual mercenaries of some caliber. They do recognize one another in some shape or form so it doesn't feel too weird. The characters are built around their combat style and talents. Some of Concord's characters.. if not majority of them just don't have anything that tells you enough about what they excel at.
What does pink haired alien girl tells you when you look at her? How about the Prince-wannabe Mcree? Only the tank characters really scream "I'm a bullet sponge".
All of them look like background character or some mob enemy.
Because they are ugly by design. Like it or not, but humans like beauty no matter what ESG is trying to push.

I think their silhouettes and proportions should be pushed more for some characters. The ideas are there, I think they should commit more to them and exaggerate their traits a little more imho.

The issue here are the designs themselves. Theres literally nothing that tells you about who the characters are and their personality. The most important thing for characters is the silohuette and here it doesnt tell you anything about them because they all look alike
You know which characters were interesting? Team Fortress 2 characters and their funny back stories. We need more of that.

Orisa in overwatch has 1500 effective health when using fortify. Mcree does 70 per damage with a 6 shooter. 70 x 6 is 420, mcree would take 3 mags and fortify negates headshot damage headshots.
@@KidArkx Orisa is arguably the tankiest Character in the whole game. Her whole kit is being a bullet sponge. And McCree is not the hero with the most damage. So this comparison is not really accurate. In this game, even the 220 HP characters eat like 2-3 mags

Cassidy change up idea;
trick shots, switch out different ammo types to perform different shot types to become a Utility/ DPS or even shoot to make temp cover.
Windowmaker change up;
Instead of a grappling hook give her the following;
1. Teleporter that allows her to have a point a to point b
2. A rope and hook you have to throw, allowing you to traverse only based on where you climb and make your own sniping points
3. Make a structure below you, making your own sniping nest
4. Super jump
5. Double jump
6. Flight BUT can't snipe while flying
Tracer change up;
1. Shotgun like the scout from TF2
2. Needle gun
3. Daggers
4. Energy cannon like Megaman
Oh wow that wasn't hard to do now was it. That took me like what less than 5 minutes to think of all of these changes? If you can't think of any creative ideas and only steal from existing archetypes then you might just need to quit being a game designer all together.

I liked the game, the graphics are great and i enjoyed the guns and diferent types of gameplay. I don't like all the characters designs, but there are 16 options, i think it's ok to dislike some of them.

I tried it last night. It wants to focus on Overwatch style gameplay, where teams group up most of the time (for healing & DPS). But on Arena style maps (not lane maps)... So it doesn't flow well. It'll be DOA imo...

It has characters that prioritise support, like healing others, focusing on team play & no health regen. Just to name a few. It has A LOT of similarities with Overwatch. It merges Overwatch elements with Arena shooters, and it fails at it...

I am a freelance designer and I think the art style is great and it has amazing animations with a unique colour scheme that not many games dare to use. Still wouldn't pay to play something like that though.

fascinating how there are always like 2-or 3 overwatch clones announced at every conference and no one cares about any of them.
I honestly could not give two shits about these types of games. The trailer was cool, when I thought it was a single player game, or even co-op. But once i realized what it was, my interest went out the window, as it did for all my friends in the group chat that were talking about the reveal.
The gunplay looked good and you can see the ex Bungie involvement but having payload esque modes without lane maps was a stupid idea

The CGI trailer intrigued because it looked like a GotG and Star Wars mix which are my two favourite franchises of all time and i thought it would be a coop game. Then they showed the gameplay and immediately I lost interest

I remember a conversation about art design that when you have to broad of a concept and a consistent logic you can easily lack identity. Startreak is a great example as it’s alien deign is humans with funny head features, not the most specific but it works well enough. Like marvel this game seems to drawn it inspiration with from a lot of different places without much logic as to why they all exist together.
