I just ordered one. I hope its not disappointing in SSB reception. I have a Sangean 909x which is pretty much dead on SSB unless you use the external long wire antenna. I'm hoping for a little better performance on the Tecsun PL 880. Also the 909X firmware is not up-gradable but I have read that the firmware on the 880 is but you have to send it back to the manufacturer. Nice out of the box review.

I had the Tecsun PL-880 and I couldn't get ONE SW station from my house, but with the XHDATA D109 I received a solid 30 station with just the standard antenna. So the $40 XHDATA D109 outperforms the $180 Tecsun PL-880. The XHDATA D109 also has equivalent sound quality. I returned the Tecsun PL-880 and kept the much superior XHDATA D109.

2000 mAh not 200 . I've liked this radio and the battery lasts such a long time in use and storage. I have left it unused for over 6 months and was still fully charged. Darn ... mine didn't come with two batteries like yours did. Hope you've had fun with it.

Very nice unit man! I haven't listened to Shortwave in about 30 years. I ordered the Tecsun Pl - 660 and have been chewin at the nail to get it! I also ordered extra wire for an antenna.

I would also like to recommend to you another radio item that's also made my Tecsun, It's the ICR-110. The Tecsun ICR-100 is small FM/AM radio that basically works as a modern day version of the old school cassette tape recorder. The ICR-100 has Three ways of recording, which allows you to record FM broadcast from the radio itself, record from the Built-in MIC intput, and you can also connect the ICR-100 to any other Tecsun full bands radio(PL-880) to record international radio programs and any HAM radio stuff you like. The ICR-100 records in the following formats MP3/128Kbps with High tone quality and has 15-hour recording for 1G card & 32G max memory TF card. I sometimes listen to my Tecsun PL-880 through the ICR-100 so I can record the broadcasts that I'm getting from my PL-880. The recording sound great, check it out.

+TheSmokinApe The Tecsun ICR-110 is a bit quirky, but once you get figure out how to use it it's great to play with. Here's a review of it swling.com/blog/2014/02/the-professor-reviews-the-tecsun-icr-110-amfm-radio-recorder/ It sells on amazon for between $40.00-$45.00 which is totally worth it.

Hey SmokinApe, glad you listened to my recommendation and went ahead and bought a Tecsun PL-880. I'm glad you really like it. I've been using/playing with my PL-880 for about almost two years now and I have found several features not listed in the manual just by sheer accident. The I realized after looking on the internet that Tecsun for some strange reason hid a lot of features in the PL-880 as "easter eggs" Here's a link to the website that best explains/shows the hidden features swling.com/blog/tag/tecsun-pl-880-easter-eggs/ check it out!!!

TheSmokinApe funny u ask. I've had It for months and clueless how to use. I just bought a bunch of stuff I thought might need, u know. It's why I'm looking for vids on how to use this thing. I'm a single working grandma raising grandkids and can't seem to get to my studies. Got a couple baofeng handhelds that I found out after buying I can't use yet. Ohza wellza. Ha

I’ve been really happy with my PL-390.
    Bought a PL-600. A fine radio but un-inspiring.
I also have 2 Tecsun pocket AM/FM radios that I very much like.
So , I just finally ordered this PL-880. ( Black, because I have silver and grey radios).
    Cool.

But having the unique grey PL-880 is definitely cool.

      TheSmokinApe
      I’ve been blessed.
This new one , the PL-880 is my Birthday present to myself.
Though I really shouldn’t spend the money, this will be my last “new “ radio. With all that is going on in the world, I wanted to get one final good one. The only other high dollar portable left is the Sangean ATS-909X, but for the price, I’m not convinced it is really worth that much. I have a 13 year old ATS-909, and while it’s nice, I don’t think it’s THAT nice. Might as well get an S-8800 in stead.
I will begin saving up to have my vintage radios redone.( Zenith R-7000y,
      Panasonic RF-2200,
      Sony CRF-190,
      And a Candle VMS-1224.)
But, I have found, that if all I had was one just half decent radio, I’m happy.
      📻😁
      There’s a RUclips channel,
“Tom’s Radio Room Show “, that Showcases my radios along with much other content, especially concerning Short Wave.
      📻🙂

Im curious if those Tecsun radios are better than the ole Eaton and Grundigs. I see a lot of those Tecsuns being used so they must be good. I like that it uses the 18650 also.

    Hello
I will give you my opinion on several Tecsun receivers.
I tested the PL660 and the PL880 because both have the airplane band. Previously I had bought the PL880 whose sound of the speaker has always made me dream. I am French and we have a lot of radios on the Parisian FM which prevents me from testing the FM quality. I left in the countryside with FM transmitters in Amiens around 50 kilometers and as I was looking for a good receiver in LW, MW, SW and FM I could see that the 680 and 660 were worth nothing in FM compared to the PL880. It's really the one that captures distant FM while the other two have only noise. The big problem is that I miss the air band and the RDS. So I banish the 680 and the 660. I would like to test the ELTON Satellite which seems to me complete but the FM is it as sensitive as on the 880? I also thought of SANGEAN but no air band. So if you have an idea for my Christmas it would be nice.

I’d love a satellite but have never tried one, sorry I can’t help.

+TheSmokinApe I was thinking it would be nice to have as a desktop radio with an external antenna port. I've wanted to put a long wire from the tower for shortwave listening, but was wondering what to replace my 25 year old Grundig with. The GP5 can remain in my emergency gear. My requirements were:
      - SSB
      - External antenna port
      - Direct key entry
this seems to fulfill those requirements :)

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  8 лет назад

It does all those, so you should be good. It's a shame the gp5 doesn't have direct key input. That radio is more for portable comms IMO...

Can anybody chime in to help me, I have a Eaton elite executive it’s About one years old. Never had a problem with it lately though on 20 meter side band I can’t seem to tune anybody in they all sound out of frequency it’s only on
20 meter I’m fine everywhere else I don’t understand . Just a little something I only use the radio a dozen times in the year that I’ve owned it, so it’s not like it’s been abused is there anyway I can send this to a tech and have them fine-tune it in thank you

Apologies for asking a basic question but you’re set to Upper Side Band?

    • @jojojeep1
      @jojojeep1 3 года назад

I am set to lower band, I can’t even tell what frequency they’re on I can go three frequencies up or three frequencies down where I hear the loudest is where I stop and try to find tune I can’t get them in. But on 80 m it’s perfect I don’t get it somehow my radio needs to be tuned in

    • @TheSmokinApe

20m and high rises Upper Side Band, that’s most likely the issue
