    Testudo was neither the best, nor most powerful roman military formation.
    It was a defensive formation designed to protect against incoming projectiles such as arrows while being on the move.
    It was not designed to be held for extended periods of time to attack, and extremely vulnerable to enemy charges, especially on the flanks.
    So very easy to counter by any organized opponent

    Agreed! Testudo was a formation defensive posture. It's just movie fell in love with it and use for every scene to look cool. Another inaccuracy is when movie scene show legionares swinging their short swords. They jabbed with it, and usually after the enemy swung first. Also they kept their shields in front of their torsos at all times, even when stabbing and jabbing.

      One-eyed Owl it’s the most well known, and in pop culture often mistaken as a phalanx, although testudo was a type of phalanx formation as a phalanx as we know it has been used for millennia in Europe, it doesn’t require shields all it requires is soldiers be extremely close to each other to not allow enemies to enter through the front of the phalanx, the flanks are still open to attack but can be supplemented by other regiments like Hannibal did with the peltast and thureophoroi supplementing the hoplites flanks in a phalanx formation, along with the hoplites using the sarissa the Romans had a hard time to say the least conquering Carthage. While not the best, the phalanx was damn good at its job, and it was changed by different commanders and cultures to fit their needs.

    • @icksv5529
      @icksv5529 4 года назад +3

      not really, no it's not true.
      In the video we are witnessing a frontal charge that takes place in a sprawling way by a group of light infantrymen. The impact area is limited to the front and the pressure exerted does not happen all at once.
      At most, the failure of the testudo could occur due to a constant pressure given by the mass of the bodies that lean against each other, pressure which however is interrupted, because every time they approach, the enemies are injured, or killed.
      The only way to get it to breaj would be the exhaustion of Roman soldiers, enemies unable to feel pain and fear that continue to pile up, an elephant charge.
      An example of the effectiveness of testudo, although slightly modified, we have it in the wars of Marcus Antonius against the Parti where testudo is also used to resist the charge of heavy cavalry and if use to resist a charge of Cataphracts, can be used in the video of example considering that sprawling group.
      The testudo seems a simple formation to break, but we look at it with the eyes of modern people without taking into account the effect it had on the morale of the enemy troops and without considering that if a blow hits you, you will not remain insensitive.

    • @icksv5529
      @icksv5529 4 года назад

      Testudo and his variants were used every time their use was found to be useful.
      If the enemy army was using projectiles (arrows, slingers, javelin etc) and the romans had to advance, testudo was used in disregard of siege or pitched battle.
      Mentioning again Marcus Atnonius, and repeating myself testudo variant (moenia) was used to resist the charge of Cataphracts. They were not horse archers, but a hell of heavy cavalry.
      What we see here it's a bunch of disorganized enemies. Some in the first line literally throw himself against the shields, which is stupid but realistic if we stay on the chronicles of that time, yet broad.
      Beside the first ones who throw themselves on the shields, we have the ones who falls killed or wounded which simply create a cap between them and the fellows behind them. We don't see anyone drop his weapon and coordinate a push and the rest in the back lines for what we see can just stay around without pushing.
      Moreover the shields surface help to distribute and dissipate the pressure force. Break that small testudo it's possible, with a strategy, I do not see any in the video.
      The video does not shows us the most logic thing to do, hit the back of the testudo, so we have to assume that it's not happened.
      The moment in which the video is debatable it's when testudo it's opened to create a circle around the prisoners. At this point, the eventual pressure would dissipate on a very small area and most likely, easier to break the only first line of romans, and yet it does't happen.
      Why does not happen? Because it's just a movie? Maybe. Because of a tactical mistake or undisciplined soldiers? Can also be. For example:
      The Carthaginians were a maritime power without a personal army. The armies of Hannibal and Hasdrubal were made up of mercenaries including the Gauls who were known to be unruly and drunkards.
      In the Metatauro battle, Hasdrubal between the various ethnic groups of the infantry, he had the Gauls that deployed on the left side, usually the weakest, behind the hills in order to prevent them from being noticed by the Romans right because of their "peculiarities" and because he hoped that by climbing the hills, the Roman would got tired, balancing the gap.
      When during the clash, the Romans manage to overcome Hasdrubal, they found the drunken Gauls and kill them all. I'm sure that if depicted in a movie, someone would have said "bullcrap" but the truth is that we are humans with strengths and weaknesses, moreover they were mercenaries and so fighting for money. ;)

      Rome returned to Germany but Tiberius blocked Germanicus in the conquest of Germany
      Search on google Germanicus Wiki.
      An extract:
      "While Germanicus enjoyed some success in his campaigns against Arminius and his allies, Tiberius decided not to attempt to conquer the Germans and recalled Germanicus to Rome. The effort it would have taken to conquer Germania Magna was deemed too great when compared with the low potential for profit from acquiring the new territory. Rome regarded Germany as a wild territory of forests and swamps, with little wealth compared to territories Rome already had. However, the campaign significantly healed the Roman psychological trauma from the Varus disaster, and greatly recovered Roman prestige. In addition to the recovery of two of the three lost eagles, Germanicus had fought Arminius, the leader who destroyed the three Roman legions in 9 AD, and defeated him in numerous battles. In leading his troops across the Rhine without recourse to Tiberius, he contradicted the advice of Augustus to keep that river as the boundary of the empire, and opened himself to potential doubts from Tiberius about his motives in taking such independent action. This error in political judgment gave Tiberius reason to controversially recall his nephew. Tacitus attributed the recall to Tiberius's jealousy of the glory Germanicus had acquired, and, with some bitterness, claims that Germanicus could have completed the conquest of Germania had he been given full operational independence."
      However it was right for everyone that the Roman Empire collapsed. All empires are overbearing and must fail. All empires are tyrants and must lose.
      Napoleon lost to an ambush, blitz, sudden attack, underestimated the Russians, the Russians feared Napoleon, the only way to beat Napoleon was to make a sudden attack, the Russians sacrificed the city Moscow.

    The Testudo (Turtle) formation uses shields in front and on top versus missile weapons.
    The other formations were just the normal closed-in shield walls. There should have been spearmen in the second rank to stab through the gaps in the shield from over the shoulders of the first rank. The Romans would have one or two javelins and/or pila (pilums) to throw at enemy in range before they reach the shield wall.
    Centurions and legates could lose their distinctive helmets but there should be file closers (sergeants) to repeat and take up the commands and dress the ranks.

      No.
      The depiction of the testudo here is wildly off.
      The testudo was a defensive formation against missile attacks only.
      In close combat, offensive or defensive, it was useless.
      The tank is the conceptual successor to the cavalry.

  • @Tyrfingr
    @Tyrfingr 6 лет назад

    Movies never use the formation correctly.
    At the command testudinem formate, the legionaries assumed the testudo (tortoise) formation. This was slow moving but almost impenetrable to enemy fire, and thus very effective during sieges and/or when facing off against enemy archers. However the testudo formation didn't allow for effective close combat and therefore it was used when the enemy were far enough away so as the legionaries could get into another formation before being attacked.
    At the command tecombre, the legionaries would break the Testudo formation and revert to their previous formation.
    Copy pasted from Wiki, but indeed accurate.

    Vandalen Germanic people are a group of former tribes in Central Europe and southern Scandinavia whose identity in research is traditionally determined by language. Characteristics of the Germanic languages include certain phonetic changes compared to the reconstructed Indo-European original language, which are summarized as Germanic or first sound shift. The inhabited by the Germanic settlement area is referred to as Germania.
    From the turn of the century, contact with the Romans shaped the Germanic world, just as the development of the Roman Empire increasingly combined with the Germanic world. In the Late Antiquity came in the course of migration to extensive tracts of several Germanic tribes (gentes), which formed some larger associations (see ethnogenesis), and finally to their invasion of the Roman Empire. Some of these groups founded empires after the ancient Roman model on the soil of the Western Empire, which went down around the year 476. Elements of the Germanic religion and religious customs were transferred, among other things, by accommodation into assumed Christianity.

    • @kigmaster
      @kigmaster 5 лет назад

      They were not invasions but immigration.
      There were barbarian invasions due to uncontrolled immigration, the Romans brought many poor peoples from northern Europe into Roman territory, immigrants suffering from hunger and attacked Rome, the Romans had made a mistake, they brought too many peoples of northern Europe.
      The Greek Roman culture was much more advanced than the Germanic world.
      The barbarians brought the Middle Ages, the Greek Roman world was reborn with the Italian Renaissance.
      The barbarians with difficulty have resumed the Roman world, they have only imitated some laws and writings, and little else.
      However it was right for everyone that the Roman Empire collapsed. All empires are overbearing and must fail. All empires are tyrants and must lose.
      Europe has imitated the Greek Roman world, the most advanced cultures.
      Christianity especially takes many models used by Roman and Greek paganism, Christianity has revised pagan models, pagan cults revisited by Christianity.

    The most accurate of these scenes was the third one, from Gladiator. The first scene was from Risen and the way they went into a loose formation to throw their pilum was completely inaccurate. That is a great way to lose trained, veteran soldiers. Plus, the fact that the captain took his helmet off was stupid, both from a movie standpoint and from a strategic standpoint. Why would you take the time to film that scene? He's going to take a projectile to the head. The second scene was nice, except for the fact that the testudo is designed for defense against projectiles. Furthermore, they never even needed testudo. No one is going to try to climb over a shield. That is a great way to get stabbed in the face.
