“Eli, Eli” performed by Madhulika Nathaniel and Seth Hoffman
lyrics by Hannah Szenes, music by David Zehavi
This song “Eli, Eli” (commonly played on Yom Hashoa) comes from a poem written in 1942 titled, “A Walk to Caesarea”, by Hungarian Resistance fighter and paratrooper, Hannah Szenes.
She wrote the poem while residing in kibbutz Sdot Yam, which is located by the Mediterranean coast near the ancient port town of Caesarea.
This song is dedicated to my grandparents William and Franka Neufeld who miraculously survived the Holocaust and for my countless relatives who sadly did not survive. This is also in honor of my mother, Sandy Hoffman, who devoted her life to educating about the holocaust and keeping the survivor and “generation after” community together.
Thank you to my mother-in-law, Madhulika Nathaniel for singing “Eli, Eli” with me and to my wife Upasana Nathaniel Hoffman and son Shane for helping make this video.
