Not many people living in stevenage would remember this. Most of the people from 70’s have moved out a longtime ago. It was our town and as a teenager we had the best era in this town, brings tears to my eyes just thinking of the good time that we had. Mid 70’s joined the working world and literally everyone had a job and the weekends used to be wonderful. The old culture and values have disappeared and now we are left with a town with million problems. It was a town to be proud of.

That's my grandad at the start 0:06 walking into the development corporation building. He was the one that commissioned this video :)

Stevenage was still relatively the same until the late 1980s just seemed to go down hill from the 90s onwards. Was such a lovely place and so many shops and department stores .

Stevenage at it's best, a new town bustling and vibrant. The town centre was full of shops and full of people. Sad to witness the state of the place today.

Im an old biker from Stevenage. Born in the bedwell area in 1956. we used to ride our bikes all year round, pub crawling to see live bands in the pyramid pub, the red lion in the high street, the fold pub in shephall, and many more. I went to collenswood school, and bedwell infants and junior schools, We lost a few of our gang members in motorcycle accidents. I moved away years ago, but i still visit regular, love walking around Fairlands valley lakes, but yes it has changed alot now. Miss my old biker pals.

I was born in '71 and grew up in Stevenage. It looked like a much more pleasant and enjoyable place to be than during when I was a teen onwards. I live stateside now but still in contact with Barclay friends. I hear its really gone to the dogs though.

0:07 - That is Swingate House, I myself worked in that building in 2019 before it’s demolition in 2022.
Also known as the building that collapsed during demolition.

It looked a much more pleasant and vibrant place back then (and was) but thats what happens if you let industry go without negotiating better deals. For decades it was neglected, not enough spent on keeping it well maintained or clean and tidy and not enough to keep youngsters occupied and out of trouble. Even those tower blocks and surroundings looked much better, almost looks like something out of Pleasantville compared with now. Hopefully the redevelopment will improve things and not just be great big blocks of flats everywhere. Very impressed with the upscaled video.

I lived in the middle tower block, it was absolutely beautiful inside and much bigger than it looked,we had a lovely live in caretaker he cleaned all day and every day best years of my life, I miss living there but apparently it’s not a good place to live now. 😢

No it’s not, it’s worst part of town, if you get given a flat in there you are pretty much trapped for life. I remember last time I went in there all rubbish bags split open in the lobby. Torn up chairs in the reception bit. I was looking at them towers in the video thinking they actually look really nice I would of probably wanted one Back then. Look a lot like the new build private blocks going up now actually. Now they look horrific with the cladding they used. If they had just kept them maintained in its original form maybe they may not look so ugly

I went to college there in 1993, hasn't changed very much apart from the buses becoming single-deckers.

That college was demolished and replaced with an ASDA store. A new college was built nearby.

I lived in Stevenage from 1965 till 1977. Around 1971 we had single-deckers called SuperBus. I remember them being yellow and blue.

Interesting how the shopping center became dark and deserted in the evening, where today the trend would be for bars and restaurants. Also, the mini-skirts!

It looks like Croydon did in '71 but without the good bits! Today both towns are concrete disasters but I do believe that 'Nage edges it to the top spot. Post-war town planning... an ugly disaster.
