There was this girl(? I think) that claimed that because the strawberry dress is so expensive, the designer is being inconsiderate towards people who can’t afford it. She said that they should make version that is affordable to everyone, completely disregarding that it’s a LUXURY item, you can afford it, great, buy it, but it’s not a necessity, you can live without it. It’s not the designer’s fault or problem. And that’s my issue with tiktok, the sheer entitlement
Sweaters are super expensive, but when you know how to knit/crochet it’s easier to understand WHY. A lot of people don’t seem to realize that yarn is expensive, especially if you decide to go for a better quality yarn. The cheapest yarn on the market is super rough and scratchy and while there are ways to soften it, it’s not going to be especially nice feeling against your skin and you probably won’t want to make a sweater out of it. And sweaters take many, many hours to create. And to get a good looking sweater you need lots of practice. It takes skill. Now that I’m done defending sweater prices, I’m just gonna say that balloon girl is ridiculous and snobby. BUT one of the cross stitch accounts I follow made a hilarious cross stitch of her H shaped balloon sculpture with the words “duet me” underneath and that’s probably one of my favorite things to come out of all of this
You can spend 30$ on yarn for a scarf (and that can be on the lower side), spend the equivalent of a whole 8-hour work day knitting it up, and then list it for 45$ only to get complaints that it's "highway robbery" and "too pricey for something they can buy at Walmart".
Thank you for talking about the strawberry dress! The creator is so so incredible and hires all women who she pays well! The price is definitely worth it
Once I found out how great the creator is and how much care goes into making her products, I was actually kinda surprised that the strawberry dress wasn't MORE expensive tbh. The price they're asking for that dress is definitely more than fair
Pricing of artistic creations and content is such an interesting topic and one I lobed seeing you touch on. It's so interesting how people just expect art for free/cheap and who don't think artistic talent is worth money. Some creators get so much hate for just having a Patreon. Also those balloon boobies are phenomenal.
In my experience the average person has no concept/ appreciation for the time many crafts take. I work in jewelry and I can spend hours and hours on an intricate piece made with copper and many people will think the price is ridiculous, but spend a few minutes on something with the tiniest fleck of gold and suddenly most people are willing to pay far more than the piece should ever be worth
It's one of the reasons why I only make stuff for myself now. It was one thing when strangers tried getting free stuff, but when I started having friends and acquaintances trying to get free stuff out of me, and on one occasion tossing a fit, I put an end to selling.
IKR! Long story short my high school school did a charity event every year that involved auctioning off hand thrown and glazed bowls and platters. Every year one would go for a thousand dollars or close to it. So every year my art teacher would talk to the students about how much their pottery went for and how to price art in the future. The moral of the story was art isn’t priced based on materials used. It’s based on what people are willing to pay and people are usually willing to pay a lot!
I actually do feel sorry for artists who get told it sucks, when they've put so much time in it. Like, criticism is fair, but art is art and if you've put a value on it, that's its value.
This is why I like instagram the most for art. The community for my corner of the art sphere is so supportive and amazing, I've almost never seen anyone be actually cruel about someone else's art. Just the odd complaint about pricing, the usual. But vast majority are positive and kind and I feel like that's how it should be. We're all doing our best!
I remember I paid to promote a TikTok and someone was weirded out by my art. I quickly learned that I was better off following/interacting with other furry artists because apparently paying for promotion shows them to people who aren't my potential audience lol
About the strawberry dress: I’ve been following Lirika Moshi for years now and find their clothing absolutely gorgeous, I really love their designs and the strawberry dress is no different :) Their designs are expensive for a reason, all of the strawberries are handmade and hand sewed onto the dress like all the other bead work they do. It is saddening to see people getting upset about the pricing and promoting replicas :(
yea its def one thing to like recreate it for yourself or make a similar dress etc but its another thing entirely to promote a cheap knock off thats lower quality and unethically produced
The guilt audios remind me of the old tumblr posts where it’s like “you’ll probably scroll past it like” or like “reblog if you support XYZ” or “if you don’t reblog this ur homophobic”
I can’t remember who did it, but there are videos talking about the efficacy of duping the strawberry dress. Basically, you can’t copyright clothing but also if you’re just making it for yourself, especially if you’re changing it some how, it’s not really bad. In the same video they talking about the positives of the strawberry dress’s designer/shop and why the $300 can be seen as justified and that fashion is to an extent a luxury so to say the dress should be cheaper is entitlement.
I love that one art video sound that’s like “hey I’m rlly tired of those guilt tripping audios so here’s my art! You don’t have to follow if you don’t want to, but thank you if you do!” That one was nice

The thing about the strawberry dress is that it's a *LUXURY* item. You don't need a lacey, frilly, strawberry printed dress, you don't need dresses at all if we're really gonna get into it. This dress is handmade with (potentially) expensive fabrics that took a long time to make, of course it's not gonna be cheap! That's like expecting a baker to make a fancy ass wedding cake and give it to you for free because it's "just a cake". Art is a luxury, it's not needed but we as human beings have a strong love for it, so we kept it and gave it platforms to thrive on so that we could always experience it. So you can't get mad when someone makes something and then gives it a price they think is fair. Can it be bullshit sometimes? Absolutely! But guess what, there will always be someone who's willing to buy. Just like how rich people buy old as hell pottery for millions, there will be someone who will buy that dress for the 200 or so dollars that it's going for. As for the recreations of the dress, I don't care. If someone thinks that they can make that dress for cheaper, let em. The great thing about life is that everything is a knockoff of something else, luxury or otherwise. I highly doubt that the people buying the knockoffs were ever gonna get the real deal and the lack of quality will show. Case in point, don't get mad at a luxury item for being expensive, get mad at yourself for thinking you're entitled to it.
"But then I remembered that most of you guys...only get your tiktok content from me." Exactly, that's me and while I am not interested enough to download tiktok I am supremely interested in your thoughts on things you see on tiktok lol!
i would install tiktok but i despise seeing people talk through my screen like, their face is at most 5cm away from their camera phone. like, why? i dont need your close up nostril and mouth movement.
Commenting for engagement and to say that guilt tripping is a huge thing in the cosplay community on tiktok, like nobody seems to understand that nobody owes you engagement or views or likes. They act like all of their followers owe them something and as a cosplayer myself I’ve had to be very careful to never fall into that mentality because I hate it so much myself. I’ve had mutuals go on really long rants about being shadowbanned or having likes be low and I just have to wonder if it has everything to do with tiktoks algorithm, or if it’s just that people aren’t liking the content and they don’t wanna consider that possibility.
Wondering what Amanda thought of Danny's attempt at a viral TikTok song, he definitely tried using that "hey, do you hate me? Why aren't you using my song?" tactic. I liked the video 😂 goofy af
Yup. I have been commissioned for art, and commissioned art myself, I've had people act incredulous at my prices, and I've been a bit flabbergasted at a quote I've gotten for someone to make me art (both way too high and also ridiculously low). I don't really do commission stuff these days, but when I was, my rates were just "how long this will take *me,* based on *my* speed, and what that would boil down to as a fair hourly rate." I was getting about as much work as I could reasonably handle, so if someone wanted my work, great. If they thought it was too expansive, that's fine, I'll work on something else instead.
I don't even get a fair hourly rate based on what I charge for commissions, and there are still people on Etsy selling similar pieces for a fraction of the price. Literally under $5 for something I'd charge $25 for. I hate it. Because of that, the entire industry gets dragged down, the customers expect a certain price point, and I know I'm probably part of the problem too because I'm trying to find the middle ground. While also trying to avoid $14 shipping cost for a $15 item which means I'd have to eat some of that cost because no one will pay that much for shipping (thanks Canada Post!) I'd love to make a living doing this, but it will always be a passion project.
this reminds me of the "arts supporting arts" trend... that I joined. Started out as a "let's support fellow arts" to "WHY AREN"T YOU FOLLOWING ME ON ALL MY SOCIALS AND BUYING MY WORK?!" *sigh*
I write advertising and I hate, hate, hate negative ads. Like the ones that either make you feel like you're nothing without the product, ones that drag other brands in the process, or ones that try to guilt or neg you into buying. It's such a dumb way to do things when appealing to desire and lifestyle is right there. Talk up the positive attributes, and how the customer's life can be easier/more enjoyable with this product - not that they'll be miserable forever if they don't get it. If your product/service is good enough, and you can hype it up on its own merit, people will want it. No tricks, just treats.
Your segment on pricing is SO true. I run my own small business that makes custom dice and when I was starting out (posting availability on Facebook groups), I had people come in and order so quickly. Then, one guy (I'll refer to him as AH) replies to someone who said that my price was "great" by saying that you could get better quality dice for much cheaper. AH then links other companies that do custom dice for better prices ON MY SALE POST and tells the original guy to check the other options out if he wants to buy dice. I was mad at this guy at first because I had done my research well and thought my prices and services were well priced (all made to order and fully customizable) while these links AH posted require minimum orders in the 50+ range and still cost as much as my dice. I happened to take pictures to show my friends how crazy AH was and I promptly reported his replies because it broke the group rules. A few weeks later, I get a message from AH through my store page asking to buy some dice. At first, I didn't remember the guy so I started as I normally did with anyone. After I told him my prices, I immediately remembered who he was when he said that I was overcharging and that X company had the same thing for less than half the price (he didn't link the company this time but it was one of the ones he linked the first time). I told him that my prices were fair for the service I offered and told him that if he finds better prices, he could choose to go with the cheaper companies. He then takes this to my future sales posts and makes a rant post where he claimed I was robbing people and cursed him out. I happily posted the original pictures I took (glad I wanted a chuckle from these because his comments were deleted) as well as the messages we sent back and forth disproving his claims. He has since been banned from several of the groups I was posting my dice on (three in total) and it actually helped my sales because his constant commenting elevated my posts to the top of the pages each time. I get that people want to get exactly what they want for the best price but you have to consider what you're buying and what is ACTUALLY available on the market. Thank you for your words!
The guilt tripping on tiktok is insane. Not only in the small business community but with a lot of social issues. It feels like every other video on my fyp is someone telling me to stop scrolling and to watch their video so they can get money from the creator fund for some horrible situation they're in or telling me about an absolutely awful thing happening in the world. I had to delete the app because it felt like everytime I opened it there was a new stranger saying "Hey! I know you're here to escape the world for a bit but here's something you need to care about and fix before you can go on being happy!" Like yes these issues are incredibly important but there has to be some level of self care involved.

I have a little side hustle where I digitize VHS tapes, cassettes, and photos. It's pretty easy to do but it takes a lot of time and you have to have certain equipment. I do it because it's fun and it makes me feel good to give people easier access to their memories.

I know from selling w/social media marketing, that sometimes, the comments about "I can get this cheaper from seller X," is actually Seller X trying to market themselves on your platform. It can get slimy out there....

Those guilt trip audios remind me of those sad 'in the arms of an angel' animal commercials- they just pissed me off and make me change the channel, not donate/buy what you're selling.
Those commercials are the reason I hate the song Everybody Hurts.
They’re attempts at emotional manipulation. Anger is appropriate
I remember back when Flipnote Hatena was a thing and people posted sad characters in cardboard boxes for stars.
Can you imagine if a large brand tried to guilt their customers? Like if McDonalds was like "wow guys, can't believe how much love you're giving to Wendys. Thought we were friends" ??? Very strange tactic to take for a business owner
I mean... If you dropped a song I would definitely give it a few listens. Simply because I have no idea what type of music it would be
also, it would be so unexpected
Also it would be swell
@Frances Reineke 100% I'll do it for free, Amanda. It wont be GOOD, but it'll be yours.

@@carolineballeza5090 That’s so sad to hear. Do what you love and stand your ground. People can be really shitty.

"You're probably just going to scroll past this.. :("
YUP ABSOLUTELY

In the same video they talking about the positives of the strawberry dress’s designer/shop and why the $300 can be seen as justified and that fashion is to an extent a luxury so to say the dress should be cheaper is entitlement.

i despise being guilt-tripped, so it just drives me away. My parents do it to me all the time and i don't need people on tiktok to remind me
I saw this guy on tiktok who was upset bc he wrote a song to ask out a girl who REJECTED HIM TWICE BEFORE saying she was “the one” and he had “fallen in love” and it went viral with the comments trashing the girl and it made me so upset bc that’s pressuring...I hate using guilt tripping to promote yourself
"But then I remembered that most of you guys...only get your tiktok content from me."
Exactly, that's me and while I am not interested enough to download tiktok I am supremely interested in your thoughts on things you see on tiktok lol!

Amanda: “[you] only get your tick tock content from me”
Me: I mean... you’re not wrong.
Wondering what Amanda thought of Danny's attempt at a viral TikTok song, he definitely tried using that "hey, do you hate me? Why aren't you using my song?" tactic. I liked the video 😂 goofy af
I think he was making fun of the people Amanda is discussing
truuuue hahahah he knew the song was bad ultimately, and even recognized it.
He was making fun of people like that
I know he was making fun of those people, just mentioning that he used that tactic
While also trying to avoid $14 shipping cost for a $15 item which means I'd have to eat some of that cost because no one will pay that much for shipping (thanks Canada Post!)
I'd love to make a living doing this, but it will always be a passion project.
Someone tried to get me to draw their whole Webtoons comic and they said my art wasn't worth minimum wage. 😬
this reminds me of the "arts supporting arts" trend... that I joined. Started out as a "let's support fellow arts" to "WHY AREN"T YOU FOLLOWING ME ON ALL MY SOCIALS AND BUYING MY WORK?!" *sigh*
This is basically an unofficial entry in the “trying it so you don’t have to” series where Amanda tries semi-obscure TikTok.
"A lot of you get your Tik Tok content because of me". Yep, same with Quibi lol.
I really hate marketing that is guilt focused or tries to neg one into a purchase. It is why I don't buy Dr. Squatchor a range of other products.
@@punchdrunkassassin i would actually be ok with watching ads more often if more of them were like this.
Yeaaah... I'm just on DnD TikTok. The rest of the information I get from you. I like our arrangement.
