Thanks much Jay, i bought this amp for my Desktop PC audio setup based on your review. I currently have it paired with Technics SB-C700 bookshelves. WOW is all i can say.
I really like the direction SMSL has been taking things. They seem to be listening to the audiophile and enthusiast market and trying to make products that fill those needs despite us being a smaller segment of the market as a whole. There are a lot of China based hi-fi manufacturers that are making seriously good looking gear and making it more accessible to the North American buyers then ever before! It's a great time to be into audio!
They’re disrupting the market, far as I’m concerned. And it’s great.
I've been following this channel for a while. Your reviews are thorough and extremely interesting, loving the content.

As I get more amps I come back to the a1 and it keeps proving to be more than worth it. Best audio purchase I probably ever made outside of my 2 main dacs
Hey enjoyed the in depth video sir, looks like this unit punches above its weight class , thanx making us audio folks aware of this unit🙏🏾👍🏾🔥
i own a smsl sa 36 for over 10 years now, realy enjoyed it for a view years
Congrats on having one of the best independent hifi YT channels out there!
Really interested to hear your review of the new Denafrips Pontus II. Hope you can get your hands on one soon to demo.
He reviewed that already
@@delvalle9256 I think he's only reviewed the Pontus (10 months ago). They've released a new version now - Pontus II
Yes, nailed the setting and haircut 👌
I was thinking the same thing 🤗🤗

Great review. Genuine honest info. Likes & subscribed.
This amp reminds me of my very slim and small vintage Musical Fidelity A1 Class A integrated amplifier that was designed by Tim Paravicini.
that reel to reel in the background is STUNNING
Using this with Wilson Duette speakers in small room, sound is top quality
Would be interesting to see how this would compare 2 diy Nelson pass amp camp 1.8 mono block class a amplifiers. About the same at $327 per amp but you must assemble. They will be more substantial and take up more space than this amp once built. I think you will get 15 watts of class a and perhaps more flexibility and what you can drive. It's still low watt class a with the same warning that these amps need to be paired with higher efficiency speakers. Can't go wrong with a simple single ended class a amp from Nelson pass!
I think it was intended for high end desktop systems with both headphone and speakers so the power should be adequate. I would be good to evaluate the HP quality although it should be at the highest quality.
If you are intrigued by this unit check out reviews of the Keces E40. It's small enough to be used in a near field set up but has enough power for a main 2 channel system. At $600 USD, my only cons are the lack of XLR input and the tiny plastic remote.
Keces e40 is class A too? Would be interested.
Excellent review.
What do you think would be a good pairing for a bi amp setup? The A1 for highs and mids.
When you measured power from the VMV was that RMS? and did you load/drive both channels or only one channel?
What model reel to reel is that? Can't beat the pioneer 1050.
So tempted to get this amp. But my Kef Q350 is 87db. Will it be a poor choice? The distance to speakers is about 2m. In general listen to female vocals, jazz and country on this speakers.
What is your opinion for this amp + Tannoy XT6F speakers + REL t9i?
Would that be OK for a smaller room (about 25m2)?
I don't listen out loud, about 60-70dB.
Hi, very informative, my friend keep em coming.. Regards Antony .
Been looking at SMSL Dacs hoping to get one for Christmas
Very good vidéo, thank you
How nice if SMSL could scale up this amp to output double or triple the power and price it accordingly. I m very sure majority of audiphiles won't mind having bigger sized enclosure with proper heat sinks for better components lifespan. With such a great review for its sound quality..its quite disappointing to see why SMSL chosed to limit themselves in the design..
SMSL VMW A2 is out
@@alvinang332 A2 is Class D
Are you doing a review of the 40th anniversary Triangle Cometes??
I have cerwin-vega sl-15 and I have parasound 2250v2 and my system sounds amazing but I would try that amp but my speakers do need 100 to 200 watts so I belive that amp will not be good pairing
Could this one be enough for my Borea BR03's?
SMSL if you read this please build a model that has double the power at no more then twice the price. If at all possible a dual mono implementation. Thank you.
I don’t think anyone would buy an SMSL in that price range.
@@Cujobob i would
Tonewinner AD66d Class A 85wpc with DAC at usd400, heard of it? TQ
Good news, class A amps get cooler as you drive them, so the max temp will be at idle.
The should make a pre out for this amp
And SMSL should make a “power amp” based on the same amplification for biamping
How do you campair with AB amplifier around 1000 USD?
Interesting.
Also, I think you meant to say...fry an egg....
Nice job as usual...
I have a pair of old Magnepan SMGa's that I tried with a NAD 302 and they sounded ok, and now I'm looking for something better and was wondering if I should try the SMSL AO200 or if someone can suggest an affordable amp. I really do not know if my repair of the maggies was done well and that is why they sound kinda dull or it's just that I do not have enough power. (Edit just got the SMSL AO200 and it can power SMGa Maggie's very nicely)
If you lean the SMGa forward so it stands up straight, it will become clearer and less dull.
This A1 reminds me of another A1 from the 80s and, that one was not too expensive either. It would be amazing if there's a way to compare this A1 with that A1 by MF🤔🤣
I love this amp and I enjoyed your review. I wonder why I didn’t experience distortion at higher volumes 🧐
It was probably the kefs that we’re distorting, not the amp.
Impedance and sensitivity of your speakers might be a good match for the amp.
No sub out...distorts beyond half volume...bummer.
@@patrikbjorling4391 Beyond half volume is crazy loud unless using a speaker with crazy low sensitivity. Even one third of the volume was way too loud here and my lowest pairing was a 85dB sensitive speaker
I wonder if it is bridgeable?
I want to see your "definition" of high end equipment
VMV A2 and its non DAC counterpart the SA400 fills that void with sound to match.
Compared to sound artist SA200ia for less $ ?
You can add a laptop computer fan, and it will stay cooler.
Symmetrical Model name / logo.. I like that already .=)
Is that a temperature read out on the display? I saw a 36.5 C
yes lol
What’s the warranty length? Will frying eggs 🍳 on it void the warranty?
I’ve had mine up to 43 C and it was working fine. Can’t wait to hear the next one they make.
How about a pair of Tekton Lore speakers?
I feel like most all of Tekton's models will pair well with low wattage amplifiers.
Are they sensitive? There's yet answer.
@@Audfile Sensitivity 98db!!
@@JosephTongret All the Lores have fewer drivers to power, though. This amp needs all the help it can get! 🙃
Mine distorts heavily after 60 on the volume, granted I was testing with low efficiency speakers just to see what I could still get out of it. I listen loud so even with high efficiency speakers it isn't enough. But either way for what this cost it should be clean to the top and its unusable beyond 55 - 60 on the volume, so it has even less usable power than advertised.
Your story reminds me of a guy I know who bought a Porsche, and put only the lowest octane gas in it. He kept telling people how crummy it ran. When they told him to try using higher octane gas, he told them he never has, but that it probably still wouldn't run good enough with good gas.
is there any DAC/Headphone amp WITH a remote on the market that does not suck?
Yes
The headphone socket is on the back. And it sounds very good.

Might have to give this a shot with some La Scala’s. Sounds like a great budget option
La Scala? Budget? I guess everything is relative!
I bought the smsl vmv a1 the moment it came out. It doesnt dissapoint. It's amazing and the sound is warm and smooth and dynamic.
I got one just to see if Smsl could make a class A amp. They can and you are correct.
@@r423sdex Its small and kinda made me doubt it initially until I plugged my kef ls50s to it... and it worked... and it sounded great. It's seriously crazy. I don't know why this amp isn't getting more attention. It's a true class a amp and it tells you the temperature and its very functional. It's awesome.
@@V1ralB1ack how loud do the Kef ls50s go with this little amp ?.
@@r423sdex In a small room they get loud enough for a movie. Probably to around 95db. Which is LOUD. I didn't push them past that but they did have some head room and the amp remained stable. My room is probably around 100 Sq ft as I live in an apartment and I normally do all my listening at 77-78db. For a movie maybe in the 80dbs.
You weren't sipping anything in that cup, were you? lol
I wazzzz
I would like to pair with Klipsch 600s. Would it pair well?
Yeah, I would like to know too!
You've been lied to! This is not a pure Class A design, it's a high bias AB design.
Nah..I'm happy with my Topping TP30 Mark I with built in DAC. Enough for a small bed room.
I miss your long hair. Can you do a review on the reel to reel behind you?
No he cant because there is no company willing to pay him to do that.

Heat DESTROYS the lifespan of electrolyte capacitors. If you can barely touch the amp enclosure, you are asking for trouble.
I run a fan towards my Class A amplifier to substantially reduce the operating temperature and prolong the life of my electrolytic caps.
Specifications are unclear: how a class A amp (50% maximum theoretical efficiency, typical around 25%) with 2×15W output power can have 30W power consumption? The three specs cannot coexist.
Smsl admited meanwhile that it is not 100% true class A, but a high biased AB design.
A bit pricey for 10watts perchannel
Not really keen on this design, nightmare for the capacitors as they let the whole casing all around to heat up. Add its lumpy bass and limited usage...I know it's only $660 but still. I think I'd rather buy a decent second hand class AB amplifier like Yamaha A-S1000 or Denon 1520AE for example.
I run a big Denafrips DAC so nothing against Chi-Fi but I have a feeling a lot of the time they develop stuff just to please the eye of European and American buyers - Class A, machined chassis, extremely high SINAD DAC's and so on without really focussing on sound.
What is lumpy bass ?.
RUclips really sucks at generating subtitles for you man! Literally no sentence came up right
i prefer the A2 total solution cos its sub out and more power. this should have been at least a 45watt and included a sub out
Reheat coffee looool
Huh?
I hate spiked feet on anything!
The word you're missing is "amplifier." Amplification is an abstract noun referring to an idea. In short, something that is not a physical object. It is also an uncountable and has no plural form. You can have two amplifier amplifiers, but there is only one amplification.

Noooo the elven hair is gone how can I even watch this video nooo...
Oh wait, Im here for equipment reviews, okay than
its bigger than your hand . do you know what your palm is and I am not nit picking, 8 watts vs 10 watts is 20% ....i stop there. I like that you review things i would not see otherwise so thank you very much for that, however you generalize too much for me :(
a 10watt amplifier for $660 lol
Do you think that 10 watts of class A won't be loud enough. ? It sounds more powerful than my 88 watt class ab amp that cost me over £2000.
Folks laugh at the low wattage class a stuff. Typically ones that will be not be pairing this with appreciate speakers. In case it hasn't been made clear, you need to be using high efficiency speakers with this. I'm into diy audio. More specifically low powered class a amplifiers. With all the heat demands of class a, chassis and heatsinks are typically one of the most expensive parts of the build along with the power supply. Good heatsinks are not cheap. It's apparent with this unit, instead of going with traditional extruded heatsinks they use the entire chassis as one heatsink.
It,s something strange in this review...🤔🤔🤔
Yeah, but can you carry it in your mouth?😅
I would not buy it, bad design. To go that small, needs cooling and/or at least, good heat sinks. Period!
overheating is something that engineers would have caught quite easily. Im more concerned about what compromises they made to get it to stay cooled.
@@Mr0Tubby you can fry an egg 🍳 on it so they weren’t able to keep it cooled
@@seanb3303 where did you see that? In the video it looks like it was hanging around 38°c
It sounds and works very good. It’s better than my other amps costing over £2000 each.
@@r423sdex nice what are your other amps?
