I like the idea of the plastic pop bottle fix. I also like copper bushings that will last longer. So I did a search and the only "copper" bushings are BRASS and are $200 for a full set on eBay. Not $15! I may take the plunge & spend the $200 as the brass bushings look like they will last for a good long time. I guess you could find better deals 4 years ago!
That will last for a while but will still wear. I suggest copper bushings. Way better than oem and you can find them on ebay for about $15 for a full set.
Never heard of a plastic bottle. But I made my bushings out of pvc piping at Home Depot and some grease man that shifter felt brand new afterwards and shifted soo clean. Nice to see a dsm vlog channel for once. Subbed!!
Nice to see more ways to make these shifters feel like new again. and technically this is a mod because you cut the plastic to the full length of the shifter mounting bolt where as the stock oem bushings only isolate the outer edges of the shifter, and the fidget bearing is definitely a mod lol, you make some fun videos thanks for sharing.
I just came up on a RS turbo laser and it had the sloppy shifter disease, I used some 3/8" surgical tubing. Had to use some heat and some silicone grease to get it all to fit but super tight and smooth now.
At 47 seconds, below your red pliers, is a broken black piece in the shape of a "C". I found a similar piece when I was replacing my bushings, but in two pieces that made a slightly tapered tube or sleeve which is about 1/2" in diameter and 3/8" long. You don't mention it. Any idea what that is? I am thinking maybe it went on the shifter to keep the leather cover from sliding down too far???
@@SparkPlugProjects I have since done my rebuild after ordering some parts and talking to people. I think it is another plastic part which slides over the silver peg which limits the travel of the shifter. Having it on there takes some of the hard slap out of your shifts. Some aftermarket manufacturers include it when selling sets of bushings as it seems to disintegrate at around the same rate as the bushings. It was originally black and may be unique to the 1990 model year. I substituted in a piece of fuel hose cut to length which slid snuggly over the peg and it seems to be working well. Much smoother less clackity shift. The original plastic was not super hard to I guess it absorbed some of the slap, but it does seem doomed to failure to have a circular piece of rigid plastic getting smacked between metal every time you shift.
Awesome fix but I think u should have put some grease or at least that spay lithium grease to help it last longer just my two cents but still an awesome fix man

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check into it again. Back then I'll I could find were bushings for the shifter base, or the shift cable.

Hey good idea, What size pvc? 1/2 inch?

Hmm I can't be sure. Looks like it was a circular bushing from the left side on the top, the right side is in place and kinda looks the same.

👌
Nice vid and clean looking dsm bro! SUB!
Thanks man, Same!
Any updates? How are they these days? Shifter still feed good?
I'm about to do this to mine... Thanks for the idea!
Shifting great, definitely worth the effort. Make your cuts as straight as possible to keep the bushing ends even. Have fun!
How had this held up
I sold the car, but it held solid for several months. You could always just spend another dollar and redo the bushings!
How has has it been holding up? I need to do this.
Still holding up. Just make sure your strips are straight as possible when cutting so the "Bushing" is flush all the way around.
How has this mod lasted?
Still holding up! Not bad for a $1 and and afternoon.
