  • Have you heard about the COP15 Biodiversity Summit in Montreal?
According to the federal Liberal government, Canada will commit to protecting 30% of Canada by 2030. In addition to this larger goal, the government is committed to incorporate more Indigenous-led initiatives to conserve and manage a number of large IPCAs (Indigenous Protected Conservation Areas). One of these areas is in a territory of 50,000 sq miles (approx the size of Nova Scotia!) in the northwest of Manitoba that will be managed by a group of Sayisi Dene people we filmed with back in 2003 (and way back in 1973 as well!).
The clip we are uploading today is from our documentary Almost Home that we produced for CBC’s The Nature of Things in 2003. It's heartening to see that the effort by the Sayisi Dene over decades to preserve their land and create jobs for their people is finally being recognized and supported by the Canadian government!
