  • Hi all! This week I wanted to talk about creating art when you're not feeling inspired, and how normal it is as artists! Sometimes social media makes things look super easy, so I wanted to open up the conversation because I definitely struggle with low periods of motivation. I hope you enjoy watching this piece come together as I chat and I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Speak soon! Katie x

    I love watching you work with the Tombows and how you use them. The mix of mediums you use is inspiring.

    I commend you on sharing so much of your challenges with motivation as a professional artist. No two days or weeks are alike and it’s tricky to comprehend the creative path is not linear. I agree that it’s not talked about enough, especially in the context of gorgeous finished sketchbook pieces on IG. So thanks for bringing this up

      Thank you so much 🧡 I want to stay positive but still share the realities, because it's the comparison on social media that can really wreak havoc on our mental health! You're so right, no two days are the same and sometimes we just wake up in a funk, and other times like creating is all we ever want to do! Thank you for watching and commenting 🥰

    I loved watching this painting come together. I find it really magical. To see that first layer go down and then what the painting ends up like, it’s just amazing. Such a beautiful painting 😍

    Hi Katie. I love the way you create art with mixed media - it inspires me to keep learning to be less 'stiff' with my illustrations . And I agree with 'pushing through when uninspired' - it makes me feel better and sometimes (or most of the time) the act of pushing through despite being not inspired or when motivation is low is one way to eventually get back to the flow of whatever it was I was uninspired of doing in the first place. And yes, we need to also be self-aware when we need to step back and (productively) do nothing.

    • @KatieMoody

      Ahh what a lovely comment, thank you so much! I'm constantly trying to loosen up and get 'out of my head' when painting. And ditto - pushing through and creating often ends up with me feeling better than if I hadn't - just the act of creating (whether 'good' or 'bad') can be a massive mood lifter. But it's definitely about finding rest and balance too! 💜

    So beautiful to see the process of this drawing Katie! I do believe is important to push ourselves when we feel uninspired, when it happens I force myself to go and do something and in end I am feeling much better with me, because I play and create something! Having a break can be necessary sometimes tho, we just need to figure out if we need a break to clear our mind and feed our eyes/souls with other things or if we are just a little bit lost in the ideas, which may stop us from drawing... hope this makes sense ☺️ sometimes my English doesn't follow along with my thoughts 🤭❤️

      Thank you Teresa! Yes 100%! Often times I find the hardest part of creating is just sitting down at the desk and starting - once I've done that I do find it easier to continue and get back in the zone! Your english is fantastic, you've made perfect sense 🥰 thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!

    This was such a gem of a video Katie, as a high school teacher I've talked about why brain rest helps you learn better to a classroom of sleep-deprived teens, but I never actually applied it to my art practice. Thank you for the inspiration 😊

    Lovely sketch Katie. Yes it's so easy to look at instagram and watch blogs and think that other artists are creating and are inspired all of the time. Always trust the process and keep going with a piece of work as well, it's surprising how many times you like what you end up with!

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Год назад

      Thanks so much Gillian! Exactly that, but there's so much context that can be lost with social media but still hard to convince our brains that they might be going through the same thing! And yes I totally agree - it always amazes me how many times something can change with another layer and how quickly our brains can change from 'I hate this' to 'I love it!' 😂

    Watching your process reminds me that good art requires pacience to add layers and layers until the point you’re satisfied. Everytime I stopped at the first layer of Tombow I lost the opportunity to try texture and different medias and to like what I’ve made. I’ll think about that next time. Thank you for sharing your process and your thoughts.

    • @KatieMoody

      Oh for sure, it really is a case of trusting the process and keeping on sometimes! I often want to abandon my artwork but adding more and more and building the layers really does make a huge difference 😊 So glad this video can help!

    Could it be that your brain is “bored” because it knows what is ahead as you’re painting similar subjects (mainly landscapes) every day using very familiar materials? I know my brain gets bored easily so I have to switch between subjects as well as materials I use. I also often get inspired from watching other artists work online, then I pick up a few of the materials I have squirrelled away and start creating along with them. My brain needs to “forget” the familiar so that when I cycle back to the materials/subject, there is a freshness to them and then it gets me excited again. Perhaps another way to find freshness/inspiration is to copy a master’s work but using whatever materials you feel like using.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Год назад +1

      Such an interesting topic! For me, I find landscapes my comfort place rather than a topic that my brain can be bored by - it's more that they are comforting, safe and always enjoyable! I have been trying different subjects this week too though, and I did a master study of Cezanne last week which is always fun! It's so interesting how much we can learn from studying a master's work. I definitely want to do more of it this year!

    Hey Katie, you’re speaking my language! I’ve been having a hard time staying motivated us with my heart since Christmas. And I just keep going one day at a time. Thank you for sharing your experience because it is easy to think that all the artists I watch on Instagram and RUclips never feel like this. So I really appreciate your sharing your less motivated days along with your motivated days and your encouragement to keep going.

      Hey Patti! I'm so sorry you've been feeling it too - it can feel like an uphill battle sometimes can't it! Thank you for your lovely comment, I really do find social media can hide the behind-the-scenes sometimes so I really wanted to add more context. As you say, we'll take each day at a time and fingers crossed the motivation will come flying back to us in full force soon 🧡

    THANK YOU!! It was really nice to hear your thoughts about how you work through things when you’re not feeling it. I committed to doing some art early, every day before work. Some days it’s really a struggle to find something to work on, but I’ve been using Mapcrunch to find things to sketch and that helps me push through. I also find if I create something that I’m not really liking, when I come back after work I find things I like and it gives me something to fiddle with.

    • @KatieMoody

      Thank you so much 🥰 I think deciding what to draw and just starting is often the hardest part! Mapcrunch is so great for taking away some of those decisions. I really like the idea that you can begin the day creatively and then if you're not liking it you can come back to it! Often having that distance can really help!

    I'm lucky I don't often feel uninspired. I think it's because I set little projects for myself so I'm always working towards something specific which keeps me motivated. If I have an off day it's usually because of life stuff, illness, not sleeping well etc. I do make time for other creative stuff like sewing or baking when the mood takes me but I do agree that pushing through it to some extent is a good thing to do. If we stopped doing something everytime we felt it was a struggle we'd never get anything done 😅. It's like any job really - sometimes you don't feel like going to work but you have to show up anyway (or possibly get fired 😄).

    • @KatieMoody

      It's so fascinating how different creative brains can work! It's true that other things can affect our creativity too - though funnily enough I once created one of my favourite paintings I've done when I was in a very bad mood 🤣 Yes exactly! I wouldn't create anything if I had to wait until I felt like it and it didn't feel like a struggle! We still have to get paid, eh 😂

    Hi Katie, quick question(s): do you work standing up? If so, do you find that helps you stay more loose with your marks? I’m thinking about giving it a try, and holding my brush/pencil/pen with a lighter touch higher up on the handle. I love your content too, thank you for taking the time, and for all of the thought and energy that goes into these great videos!

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Год назад

      Hi Stacie! I do sometimes, and funnily enough for this one I stand for the whole piece! It's for the exact reason you said - it keeps me really loose and actually I think having that little bit of extra distance between the piece can help us see it as a whole instead of getting bogged down with detail. I also find holding my materials towards the end helps with it as there is a lot less control and keeps things looser and a bit more energetic! Thanks so much for your lovely words 🥰 I really appreciate it! 💙

      Thank you so much Luisa 🧡 They have so many uses and can be layered so beautifully! Using them with pan pastels has opened up such a huge amount of options for me now too. The colours I used were 126, 076 and 158 for the greens, 553 for the sky and then 992 is the beige I used for the tree and some of the ground 😊
