    I live ten minutes away from the TATRA factory where both of my grandpas worked and now my unckle and dad are working. I'm sad that TATRA discontinued their cars that were the best you could get here, but now they make realy good trucks that are the best you can buy for terrain use and I'm so proud of that. The trucks even raced at Dakar and won several times with the driver Karel Loprais and his team, which included my uncle.

      I'm a little puzzled as embarrassing as that is to say. I just can't quite get my head around what is actually going on here? Do these big pipes encourage more air to be pulled through the engines combustion cycle? Or something different? I only ask as I have an air cooled suzuki gs500 powered buggy/ go kart and I'd love some extra free power.... cheers guys.

    • @gustiwidyanta5492

      @@justin3131ify yeah,basically the big pipes allow the exhaust gas to efficiently pull ambient air from the front of the engine.
      Basically they adjusted the exhaust pipes so it creates a suction effect,which is increased with the surface area of the big pipes.

    One of the most novel exhaust powered cooling systems that has never really caught on, was on the Wankel engined, Norton motorcycle. The venturi principle was used. A smaller diameter pipe was attached to the exhaust tail pipe and connected to the hollow centre of the rotor. As the gasses flowing past the venturi pipe were high velocity, this created a lower pressure in the venturi pipe thus drawing air through the very centre of the engine effectively cooling the innermost part of the engine. One of the most difficult parts of this particular engine design, to effectively cool without using elaborate oil coolers and high pressure cooling oil. Clever English engineering, don't you agree?
    The problem is, Wankel engines are very difficult to live with. They produce phenomenal horse power per unit capacity but guzzle fuel and require a rebuild after every use. However, Norton showed a clean pair if heels to pretty much anything, when they managed to keep it running for a whole race. Like our Czech friends, we Brits. do love quirky engineering.

    • @jdoe9518
      @jdoe9518 Год назад

      And how is the capacity of a rotary worked out? Incorrectly in reality.

    • @stephenbrookes7268
      @stephenbrookes7268 Год назад

      @@jdoe9518 You ask the question knowing the answer, I am guessing. Measuring displacement as opposed to swept volume is perhaps the nearest comparison with a regular engine. It only serves to fit it into a capacity class.
      It doesn't account for the fact that a four cycle has one power stroke every other revolution, a two cycle has one every revolution but a rotary has three every revolution, and you can rev the nuts off it!
      The obvious downside of this is it burns more fuel and it preceded the materials technology to reliably build it! Both of which doomed it to commercial failure for all but the esoteric enthusiast. Plus the fact that the designer was a raving Nazi, didn't help much!

      Don’t forget that the rotors spin 1/3 the speed of the eccentric shaft. So in reality only one combustion event per rotor takes place for each revolution of the eccentric shaft. Cheeky perhaps, but not inaccurate. So your question is not rhetorical, since you don’t actually know the answer. Suzuki used a similar setup on the R5 rotary motorcycle.

    You also have thrust mass contributing to forward force.
    But just to give a comparison my olds 3.3 liter v6 produced 185 hp as did my 283 about 195. And so 200 hp is a run of the mill number by the late 1950s.
    Certainly a aircooled engine has its advantages, head gaskets are far mor forgiving with aircooled engines, but there are limitation on cylinder size. For gasoline powere engines the optimum cylinder volume is half liter. So if you want to increase output you either need more cyclinders, a turbocharger (realistically 30% more with more strength in the head, head bolts and head gasket), multiover head cams and 3+ valves oer cylinder, electronic ignition and advance.
    Some losses occur in the peak force angle of the rod to the shaft, but decreasing these forces generally results in lower RPM, peak power and higher torgue and tends to be a feature if long lasting engines but not race cars. One can also increase the fuel to air ratio which lowers EGT and allows one to increase pressures in the manifold, again at the cost of efficiency.
    Theres a YT site Robot Cantina where a 3 cylinder 660 cc deisel engine is used to power a saturn coupe. He manages to get the car to 80 mph and gets 80 mpg at 50 to 60 miles per hour. He basically modified the engine to turbo the crap out of it, increase feul flow and maintain EGT and MAP just below its limit. In effect hes pushing a car with three typical lawnmower engines. For comparison a prius, a much heavier car, has a 1.5 l engine it also has a max just over 80 (you can drive faster, very unconfortable) and gets abot 60 mpg between 55 and 60. Of course a prius does not have diesel fumes blowing in your face, no A/C and the acceleration of a fully loaded dump truck.

    The other advantage of the ejector exhaust is that it sounded absolutely sick-nasty.

    Right now we are fitting a turbo to a Deutz F4L912 and will add this daft system to the exhaust just to see if it actually works for standard running (low RPM) air cooled motors

      If you have sufficient turbo air pressure use some of it in an "ejector jet" to create additional venturi effect for that exhaust?
