I was 14 in Ireland. I sang it in English and Maths class, I still sing it in public. My aunt's husband used to give Mel Smith the taxi ride to the BBC. A grumpy sort apparently. I will never stop singing these verses.
I found out recently that my Mum had Gandhi's autograph (sadly she sold it to an auction for about £200 a few years ago :( ) - ever since that fact came to light, I can't stop singing 'Gandhi, Gandhi, it if wasn't me old mate - Gandhi!'. My OH thought I was mad - was so happy when I found this sketch and realised where I'd got it from (and proved my sanity to boot)!
This is by far and away the best s&j skit ever! Nobody beleived it was real when I used to sing this on my fork truck at work now I have shown them and we often sung ammended versions of the ghandhi song picking down an aisle the other day .... Love it to bits thanks fir putting it here
Haven't seen this in years but have been singing the Ghandi song, to the great chagrin of my friends, all this time. Now I can prove to them that it's real and that I'm not a complete loon.
I agree! They made a great comedy partnership Griff and Mel. They bounced off each other in such a naturally gifted way. Especially the head to heads, true genius!
Upon hearing the sad news about Mel Smith today this was the first thing I wanted to see as its such a funny and memorable sketch - I could still sing the Gandhi song all these years later.
same. i remeber back in the day when i used to babysit my lil sis and all my m8s would come round for some reason i got this on vhs and we all used love this clip. still sing the gandi song now n then. great post aint seen it in years
One of the great sketches this one. In the Sketchbook Griff warms it up a bit by thinking what new material could've come from Steve Rogers' pen in recent years and I'd claim that the "Hotel Rwanda" score was right there with "Apocalypse Now" as his top works...
AmySavage6 “I needed to rest my weary bones/ so i stopped and had a gander/ at a place with breakfast and rooms for a tenner/ so I booked in the Hotel Rwanda!” I have the original Stanley Rogers soundtrack on vinyl
Oh my lord! I used to sit beside a guy in Science at school like 12-14 years ago and he used to always sing that Ghandi song at me! It always stayed w/ me. This is the first time i've heard the original!
Remember this as a kid. Loved it then- but it’s a masterful sketch- the build up and then the style of the music hall tone and finally the punchline of dropping in a dramatic film title. That being said, Octopussy would have been better if they’d dropped John Barry for Stanley Rogers
Many years later, I was getting old and tired / And me legs were bent and - bandy! / I couldn't help wonderin' what he'd say now / If he were here, me old mate Gandhi! / Gandhi, Gandhi, / They went and shot me old mate, Gandhi
I would say, one of them. They did so many hilarious sketches, it's hard to pick. My favorites are, the unluckiest man in the world - Arthur Penis, two yokels having breakfast, and Brian May. And this one, of course!
Saw this sketch a couple of days ago. I've had the "Apocalypse Now" song on my mind ever since; occasionally interupted by the "Octopussy". Please help me!!! Possibly by shooting me in the head.
Suddenly, today, in the kitchen found myself inexplicably singing Have Your Apocalypse Now. Found the sketch here on youtube, wow, this is the first time i've seen this sketch since it aired on TV I am pretty sure :D Great comedy craftsmanship really does last forever it seems :) It's odd how they faded into obscurity somewhat ( although I know Jones is on 3 men in a boat and Smith is obviously long gone now ) but I think they were too good for that to happen really. They were so many steps above the Russ Abbots, Little and Larges of the time. I recall another sketch ( That either the Simpson stole or by an amazing co-incidence had the very same idea ) where someone is being interviewed in a police room, accused of a crime. The police have tried to manipulate the interview video to frame the guy, but have done such a ridiculous job of it. Like the clock on the wall, behind Mel Smith, constantly changing, due to the edits etc... The Simpsons did it too, much later when framing Homer for being a sex pest haha... Is that original Smith and Jones sketch online at all ?
I'm trying to find out what tune is playing in a sketch I have on cassette tape. This sketch is on my tape followed by a non-talking sketch which sounds like children shouting and a piece of music which sounds like a cross between Jean Michel Jarre and The Pet Shop Boys. This video though, shows Mel and Griff sitting in chairs right at the end of the Stanley Rogers sketch which is different to the episode I have on tape. This same tape also has Mel and Griff talking about orgasms.
Hi, I've done a transcript - a labour of love, because this is one of the funniest sketches in history, I think. But it's far more than the 500 characters you're allowed: how can I upload it? The automatic one is complete crap...
Can someone explain to me the "have your apocalypse now" joke please? I liked the rest of the sketch, but I didn't get the joke p.s. I think they've prophesised Mr Bean's Mini at 3:07
"Ave yer a-poc-a-lypse now!" is a line that has never really left me ever since i first heard it last century.
People said that in 1900. They were as right as you are.
And here it is, at last
I can't even think about the film apocalypse now without smiling at this song lol
@@Markcain268 Same, genius. "She said leave it 'til the end of the week, I said, no-go!"
I still sing "Have Your Apocalypse Now" when I'm in a good mood.
I sing it whatever mood I'm in, amazing. So funny Griff Rhys-Jones can't stop from laughing

@@londoncalling151 Yeah, I heard Mel Smith was quite, ah "mercurial".
I've been singing it a lot recently. Utter genius!
Brilliant, these songs are more memorable than the actual film scores.

I laugh like a drain every time I hear Stanley trying to play the James Bond theme at 2.57. Comedy genius.

This sketch is, like Stanley Rogers, one of the greats.
One of my favorite S&J sketches.
Haven't seen this in years but have been singing the Ghandi song, to the great chagrin of my friends, all this time. Now I can prove to them that it's real and that I'm not a complete loon.
R.I.P Mel. A true comedian who will be missed.
I agree! They made a great comedy partnership Griff and Mel. They bounced off each other in such a naturally gifted way. Especially the head to heads, true genius!
Mel was great so sad he died so young
Upon hearing the sad news about Mel Smith today this was the first thing I wanted to see as its such a funny and memorable sketch - I could still sing the Gandhi song all these years later.
I love this - haven't seen it for soooo long. I can still remember all the lyrics, great to find it on here
Classic... I remember this as if I just watched it yesterday, yet I didn't...
Best sketch ever! These songs stayed with me and even worse, I can't watch the actual films without picturing these songs in them!
brilliant - just one of the greatest comedy skits ever
Oh boy this brings great memories. My father and me laughed our heads off many times to this one :-) (I´ve got this episode on VHS) .-)
I agree, one of the best sketches ever! "You're hired" haha!
When I hear about this movies, I cant help and sing this songs. Just kills me. Best humor ever😂

We all used to sing this in the pub after a few pints. Ghandi is such a classic song!
Gandhi is even better
I remember this from years ago, thanks a million for posting.
Thank you so much for posting my all time favourite skit from Smith and Jones, love it to bits, still cracks me up!!
My prayers answered! Thanks so much for posting.
R.I.P Mel Smith, this is my favourite Smith and Jones sketch.
possibly the funniest sketch ever!
Oh my lord! I used to sit beside a guy in Science at school like 12-14 years ago and he used to always sing that Ghandi song at me! It always stayed w/ me. This is the first time i've heard the original!
Remember watching this and I wet myself so funny😂😂😂
The looks on Mel Smith's face at 2:42 and 4:02 is priceless.
Lol Smith and Jones so good still 35 years on
One of the great moments in British comedy!
Wow!! Top nostalgia. I certainly remember this sketch "Ghandi Ghandi it's me old mate Ghandi!"

Love this sketch - this and the Smith & Jones Beatles sketch are musical comedy at their best...
"Thank you, darling!". :D
Best sketch they ever did
I would say, one of them. They did so many hilarious sketches, it's hard to pick. My favorites are, the unluckiest man in the world - Arthur Penis, two yokels having breakfast, and Brian May. And this one, of course!

Brilliant sketch, and great acting from Mel and Griff. If it wasn't me old mate Gandhi, genius hahahaha
JUST FANTASTIC
1991 first saw this. great to see this again-so funny.
Addictive!
Me ol' mate : GANDHI
Absolute classic!!!!!!
Jeezez this is funny. Beats more modern humor easy😂
What an idea. I wish I had the wherewithall to do it.
Saw this sketch a couple of days ago. I've had the "Apocalypse Now" song on my mind ever since; occasionally interupted by the "Octopussy". Please help me!!! Possibly by shooting me in the head.
I saw this 30 years ago and I've still got the Apocalypse Now song in my head! And "Beep cleep chimney".
Yup 30 years ago. Me and my mate singing Apocalypse Now in our history class
I'd never seen the original sketch before - I've just uploaded 2 out of the three Griff performed on the Peter Cook Posthumorous Tribute
love this video:P
Brilliant, cheers.
1:42 Heavy breather 2:19 Oh yeah! 2:43 Spot on 3:11 Barrrrrrrrrry 4:06 X-factor max .-)

Why this isn't in every "Mel and Griff's Greatest Bits" video, I have no idea.
It was in was in s and j sketchbook series they broke the sketch up in to 3 pieces with other sketches inbetween.
If it wasn't me old mate...Ghandi

@404Jeffery That was Kray Tel records. "My old man, he hates Pakistan, he hates Yugoslavians as well..."
Genius
fantastic
I really think Sir Richard Attenborough should have gone with Stanley's score for Ghandi
Gandhi as well
5 people haven't had their apocalypse yet.
edit three years later: 9
1:43 lookalike for Martin Freeman but surely way before his acting years?
one word: B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T!!
Look at this. Then look at the shit that passes for comedy these days.

I remember that one it went "Homosexuals really get up me bum. except for Ronny for he really loves his mum"
Yeah, so funny, was one of the first things that came to me too. Apocalypse now!!
@duckorange
Oh my God, you too???
Actually I think that last song really would have worked in the movie.
Yep use a Open G running on a dobro guitar and some good backing track
Me too!
'Don't be so fussy!'
Smith and Jones rule.
ghandi song was nice!ANd apocolypse nnow !
It is catchy, isn't it :)

vollsticks I appreciate your sacrifice with that explanation. I’m bleeding tears for you good sir
