- Stepsons, in this video I walk you through the process of cleaning out a dryer vent hose and duct. (Note: In the video I called it a pipe or a tube the whole time. I should have referred to it as a duct, but you get what I meant).

I've lived here 13 years with 2-3 dogs and I have waist length hair so you can imagine my dryer vent. What happened with me was suddenly there was the noisome stench of something. After days of searching, I traced it to the dryer vent. What a disgusting project. You are so right to 'teach' this to others. I wish I'd known there was even such thing as cleaning your vent before it made my house smell.
In all honesty, It'll probably be a few years before I clean out my dryer vent again. 😀

Having grown up without a dad myself, I know there are unique challenges for boys and young men in that situation. I’m hoping they will particularly take to heart the message that they can still successfully become responsible, loving adult men, despite their lack of an in-home example. That’s why I talk to them in the videos.
@@MyStepdad I was raised with out a father as well and my mother didn't really have any talent to pass. I'm enjoying the lessons you share.
Next time leave the dryer connected and turn it on low/no heat. This way when you break up the lint, it will blow out instead of you having to try and pull it out.

When I do this, I leave the dryer attached, and run it on 'air only' ... no heating, so flow is going through the vent. When you run the brush through, the debris comes out automatically, reducing any inside mess. A bit dusty on the outside, but not a big issue.

These things are not just for boys to learn...there are girls out there that don't want to rely on a man for anything. I have already taught my kids this lint is highly flammable and can cause your whole house to burn down.
By the way, depending on how many people you have in your home. This should be done once a year. The more people in your home the more often you should do it. You should also vacuum out the back of you're dryer and get all the lent. Clean it all up from the floor to walls everywhere. You should've added how to take apart the back of the dryer and vacuum out the back of it. Just a thought...

I am an older lady so tired of getting ripped off! Thank you! What do you think of using a leaf blower?
I wouldn't recommend using a leaf blower. The lint gets pretty well attached to the walls of the ductwork. I'm not sure you would get it with a leaf blower, besides the other questions that would come up. (Blowing from outside in, or inside out, not enough air pressure could cause a clog of lint mid-pipe).
And I sure hope people don't try to rip you or any other older ladies off!
Why do you have the dryer on the wrong side of the Laundry room? You have the vent to the house on the left side and the dryer on the right?
Good question. Because the doors of our front loading appliances open to the left, from our washer, and to the right, for our dryer. If we moved them the other way we wouldn’t be able to open them facing each other.
@MyStepdad ..but doesn't that model of dryer open at the top also? Ours does..it just seemed odd to have it set up like that.
@@aldo-228 Ours only opens on the front. I haven't looked in to whether the door is reversible though, like most full width fridge doors. That could be a good video if it is. 😀
@MyStepdad ..ok stepdad..I've come to figure it out..its the home builder that has it all wrong! You have the dryer correctly placed but the homebuilder put the vent in the wrong spot.
I hope you change the foil venting you have back there. That was outlawed in 1978. It is a fire hazard and will burn. Best venting is 4" aluminum hard pipe. Check your installation manual or the tag on the back of the dryer. Leave your doors open during drying. 41 years in the business. I hate to see you have a vent fire. Make sure all fluted ends of your new vent should point to the outside. Use foil tape at joints no screws.
Thanks for the heads up and for posting the concern here. The duct work is actually rigid. This house was built in 1998. I believe it meets code.
@@MyStepdad From the dryer to the vent appears on video to be flexible foil. Only 4" aluminum pipe can be used to attach product to main trunk line.
My output vent this is on my roof. CAn I use that too and do it from inside the house to the roof. Or is that a no no?⁉
Good question. My sisters house is like yours. If you wait until spring I might have a video on that. 😁. Until then, I suspect you could do it from the inside out of you have adequate access. I suspect you’ll still get a lot of the lint/dust in your face/house as gravity will be working against you.
I watched another guy do this and he taped each joint cause his pieces came apart inside and he had trouble getting it out..and I'm female and do this simple thing myself.
I hope it works out for you. I guess you could tape each joint, but the instructions for the tool indicate to only go clockwise (with the drill, like you're screwing it in). If you reverse the drill I can see where a joint could come undone. If you don't reverse the direction, I don't think they'll come apart.

I can’t believe in 2022 that dryers are not designed to catch lint in the lint trap efficiently. It doesn’t seem like rocket science to me. There have been many times when I’ve been surprised how little lint was collected in the lint trap. Now I know why - it’s all collecting in the vent tube so the dryer can malfunction due to poor air flow and I can be told by a dryer salesman that I have to replace it. Unacceptable!
I think it all depends on the particle size. You can always dry your clothes on a clothesline. No lint there. 🙂
