How to Make Aspirin Spray for Tomatoes & Baking Soda Spray: SAR Response & Prevention DIY Ep-8
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 май 2018
- Baking Soda spray raises the pH level on your plants leaves and makes the growing environment inhospitable to fungi. I show you how to make and discuss how to use the spray. Aspirin 'Acetyl-Salicylic Acid' tricks your tomato into a natural Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) response by mimicking a hormone. This fools your tomato into thinking it is being attacked. I show you how to make and use aspirin spray to beef up your tomato plant's defenses.

Wow...I literally just sprayed my tomato plants with a similar solution that I saw mentioned on another sites. That recipe used 2 Tbls baking soda to the gallon of water, along with 1Tbls veg oil, and few drops of dish soap. There was no mention of temperature on any of those sites. It's going to hit 100 degrees today! It's still early, I'm going to go give them a quick clear water rinse...my poor babies! So glad I saw your video! Thank you!!
You always have to be careful for all the mentioned reasons. Test spraying is best.

Excelent video. Thank you very much. No one explain reasons why use baking soda and asprin. others just explain benefits. Very very useful video 👍👏👏👏
Appreciated. Glad to help.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Why are uncoated asprin so hard to find? Do you sell them at your shop?
Excellent video. I started this 2 weeks ago. Sadly in GA zone 8 we went from cool April at times hitting 90. Been wet and 80s here as of late. I do this really late at night/early morning when I know the temp is around 70 degrees to avoid leaf problems. So far so good. Last year early blight destroyed my tomato plants. Powdery mildew hurt my squash mid summer after a productive spring. Going to try on them when they get larger. As you said, prevention is key. Down here in humid land we are pretty much prime for anything to grow and not in a good way.
Good luck. You have a good plan in place.
This is a very good video. I love all your videos. Keep them coming. In the past I have used canola oil mixed with some water against pests and it worked pretty good. You should try it as well. Take care.

One thing I know for sure is ASPIRIN works and HYDROGEN PEROXIDE works on my tomato plants per your explanations and formulas, Gary. Thank you!
Hi Gary, I just want to say, I love your shows. I have really learned a lot from you and I am looking forward to having my garden this year. Actually, I am going to have a garden in two different states this year as we are in the process of moving from North-Central Colorado to Central Ohio. So my thought is that I will grow my lettuces, radishes, peas, and spring items here and the rest of our garden will be in Ohio since the final move isn't until the 2nd week in June. We are still getting snow storms here and my husband, who has been in Ohio since February with his new job is getting tons of rain, I am currently flying back and forth between states. I am going to start our seedlings here and he is going to start our seedlings there. It is going to make a stressful planting year, but I am bound and determined to make it work. Here is my question, since I do not readily have any aspirin in the house, but I do have White Willow Bark (I take it for pain relief) can I use the Willow Bark (It is in capsules)?
Thanks so much! Exciting and stressful at the same time. I hope you both settle well. So they say willow bark works. Im not sure how to seep it to prepare but I read it can be used.

Will the baking soda work on my tomatoes since we have alkaline soil. Been working at mulching to improve soil. Kinda slow go. I live in south east idaho at 4500 feet. Thank you for your show. I learn so much
backing soda works good... i like the super dust as well.. it does raise ph in the soil big time.. i used these home made a lot still do... i like 7 dust these days to kill of bugs and caterpillar and those cabbage bugs...
That works.
Hey Gary. I have a quick question. All my roma-style tomatoes are doing very badly.. san marzano, amish paste, etc. I've actually had to toss a few trays which upsets me. I have a new grow room this year just like yours. They just withered and died after a weeks. I do have some mold, I leave my lights on 24-7, I stopped using miracle grow a few weeks ago as you suggested but they haven't comeback.. Most of my other plants are fine. I have about 1000 seedlings (46 varieties from pumpkins, cukes to mellons to lemon grass, a lot of herbs) BUT only the Roma - style toms can't thrive.. and ideas? thanks luv ya !
Hey Gary! I absolutely love your videos and have watched quite a bit of them a few times over. Thanks so much for all the knowledge! I curious what your spray schedule is? I know it's all about being preventive but almost all the sprays (neem, baking soda, aspirin, etc.) say spray 7-14 days. Do you spray each of these every few days as to not over load the plant or all at once to get it over with?
Thanks! So it varies and increases as heat come. Every 10-14 days April to mid June based on how much rain falls. Every 7-10 days after that. Aspirin is every 2 weeks. I spray on different days.
Thanks!

Very good information! I'm new to the garden life, so I'm enjoying the Videos! One question- can I use coated Aspirin if I crush them? If not, I'm headed to the store today! Thanks!
You should be able to, but it’s not recommended because the coating on the aspirin is sticky and could block your sprayer
I'm going today to go get not coated aspirins, banking soda I always have at home. Thank you, I appreciate the natural recipe very much and You very much. When I was younger I had written some recipes from Jerry Baker older gentlemen that would give gardening advice, those recipes had moved with me through out the years. Do you recommend using multiple sprays(asa, baking soda, need oil, etc) at the same time, or how should we proceed if choosing to use each of them ...?
Kellie, without advice from Gary I wouldn't. I would give it a day or so between each different spray. They may react with each other and counteract each other.
Gary has said it's okay to combine the bicarb and aspirin in same spray;./ Must admit I've lapsed my spraying recently due to being laid up in bed unwell.
Can we use it in peppers and eggplant?!
What sprayer do you recommend the best ?
Hary, thanks for this video, very informative. Can the plants be sprayed while they are blossoming or fruiting?

In cups, Id remove them.

Well if it is the first year and you are establishing a bed, you want them. If you don't need the runners you can remove them. I am not sure how much they effect the fruit though.
Hi buddy I like your video so this is my question you you show us three ingredients what I want to know is aspirin is it the one normally used for human medicine and soap is it hand wash soap or is it dish wash soap and thank you for your tips
Aspirin is what humans take. Soap can vary but it can be hand soap or dish soap. Dish soaps is stronger so use less. For soap I recommend Castille type soaps.

I am going to start my tomatoes indoors again. This year, I bought disease resistant varieties of seeds. Would it be a good idea for me to spray the seedlings with aspirin while they are growing in the house, or would that be too soon and negatively affect the plants? I wonder if spraying the aspirin solution indoors would also decrease the time for the hardening off process.
That is too soon. They just dont need it. Once put outdoors that is fine. Spraying wont effect hardening off. Good luck,.

Can I put 2 tablespoons of baking soda 1 tablespoon of dish soap and aspirin 2 tablets in one bottle or should I do 2 tablespoons of baking soda 1 teaspoon of dish soap in one bottle and the aspirin tablets(2) and 1 teaspoon of dish soap in separate bottles
Aspirin can really be added to anything. And always test spray new combinations in your garden as you learn the mixes.
Hi Gary, glad I found this video. My plants are in a greenhouse in the UK, so never get rained on.
How often would you spray and if you wanted to use both methods how often for each (different times or altogether)?
Also have you done a video on the aphid mix you picked up as I would like to know about that too. It's so great to see ways of protecting plants. Many thanks, Carolynne
Every 10-14 days for both. I would do aspirin first and the next day use the baking soda. They wont do harm mixed together but I dont know if the BS would change the salicylic acid.

Hmmm Don't know what that is.
Tuta absoluta is a very harmful leaf mining moth with a strong preference for tomatoes.
Gary, if you are still checking this, you can't find a dish soap that has "least amount of detergents". Dish soaps ARE detergent rather than soap.
True but people view them the same. And detergents have degrees too.

Nice video.
I am very new in gardening.
Can i use baking soda, veg oil & dishsoap solution spray in vegetables like okra, eggplants, bottle guard, Cluster beans ,green peas & chilli etc as preventing care of fungus & aphids? If yes then
At what stage of vegetables i can start to use the spray? As a preventing care after how much days i should spray again? I mean every 15 days or 30 days?
So test spray all new plants and wait 48 hours for damage. Baking soda and oils sprays should be made separately. Spray them every 7-14 days based on problems.

I found, what I think is anthracnose, on my first early girl tomato that I harvested yesterday. The plant looks very healthy and it is pruned to 12” above the mulch. A week ago I had used the aspirin spray on all my tomato plants and I have been inspecting them daily because of hot humid days here in the Houston area.
After researching and watching several of your videos and anything I could find about treating anthracnose, I decided to spray with neem oil (from your store) and soap spray. I am trying to determine if I should do another spray of aspirin or use the baking soda spray. Any suggestions?
Any fungal based tomato issue I use hydrogen peroxide spray. Search hydrogen peroxide on my channel. And test spray some leaves first. It is really effective.

Hi Gary , have you used potassium bicarbonate instead of sodium bicarbonate?
I’ve read that it not only controls powdery mildew but kills it.
I have but not long enough to give thoughts.
Ok thanks Gary .
Can you use aspirin spray and the neem oil too?
Aspirin you can mix into anything

Hello Gary, i've enjoy your video. How long does it take to consume the vegetable after spraying Neem oil concentrate also asprin concentrate?
Consume? How do you mean. Sorry.
I think they mean after you spray how long until it's ok to eat.
All safe and edible. Soap gets washed off.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN wow.
I started spraying my tomatoes with the aspirin spray, then was worried about the bee population and the affect it might have on them. I checked through google and many you tube videos but nowhere will it tell me if the spray is safe for bees. I have a lot of bees on my borage, lavendar plants and don't want to kill them all. Thank you for your help.
It is safe. There are no studies if that is what you are looking for. But it 1 or 2 aspirin in a gallon of water. Very dilute. Once dry it bothers nothing. In act I doubt it impacts anything but the plant as a hormone.

I believe Gary is saying aspirin and sulfur are acidic (Ph < 7.2) and baking soda and soaps are basic (Ph > 7.2) So I believe Gary is recommending separate spray solutions, because your objective with the fungi prevention is changing the Ph on leaves so the surfaces are not conducive to the fungi to start growing. For the aspirin, I believe that is a systemic approach and therefore should be mixed and applied separately as well. Gary is the man and knows, I’m deducing.
Aspirin is cool but you are right on sulfur and baking soda. They will cancel each other out.

Can you use the baking soda spray on flowers?
I think so. I use it on roses. But as I always say... test spray.
Gary can I mix my neem oil in with my baking soda spray and spray them together or does it need to be sprayed separately? Thanks for all of your great videos.
I recommend to do it separately. They only thing I double is tossing in an aspirin for tomatoes.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) thanks
Do you recommend using multiple sprays (baking soda, neem oil, etc) at the same time, or how should we proceed if choosing to use each of them?
Without advice from Gary I wouldn't. I would give it a day or so between each different spray. They may react with each other and counteract each other.
@@eccentricoldcow Thank you for your advice :)
@@cbez4 Welcome. best of good luck.
How old/yang tomato plants need to be to start spraying them with aspirin water?
About 18 inches high. Not set time really.
Hey Gary, binge watching your videos. I have been using Baking Soda mix on my Gardenias, and it wasn't until watching this vidoe this i realize that i was increasing my PH with it. So thank you so much for that. My question is can i mix my Neem oil with the watteble sulfur?
Thanks for watching. I try not to mix them. The more you put on leaves at once the great risk for damage especially as the heat rises. It would also take a lot of BS to raise the pH but it is possible. Good luck.,

What dishwashing soap are you talking about. Some have more detergent than others. How would we know that?
So that is the thing, there is too many to say exactly what to do. Castille is pure. I use that. But for any other soap, start with 1 teaspoon and work your way up by a teaspoon.

Great video! Ok, say I sprayed the entire garden with neem, how soon after doing this should I apply the aspirin spray? Same day? The next day? Maybe a silly question but here it goes. Is neem ok for all plants/veggies. For instance peas or beans? You said to me once, not on greens. Everything is fair game except greens for neem?
Panthera Pardus I use neem on kale and it’s fine.
I had asked him once, not too long ago and he mentioned that he didn't spray his greens, too difficult to wash off. I am growing greens for the first time this year so I never thought about it.
In theory any plant but always test spray. Generally speaking weak leaf greens I don't spray. Kale I do, as it can be washed and it is needed because of the cabbage looper. Aspirin is fine anytime. Just do water and aspirin. And only spray where you know problems come. Keep track of them. No point is praying peas lets say if they don't have issues in your area.
Thanks for the reply
So it is okay to add the aspirin and the baking soda in the same spray mix Gary?
Those 2 are okay

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I would do but I am in UK so I make all my own recipes on your guidance. Thank you so much. I've just made up some baking soda and aspirin spray but the soda is not dissolving and I reckon it will block the spray nozzle.
How soon after planting can you start spraying to keep them healthy
The plants should be like 18 inches high generally speaking.
The guy at the garden store told me to use the aspirin in the soil at planting, what do you think of that?
I tried that and my tomato was dying. I thought it was diseased and dug it up. 1/2 the roots were shriveled up. So I won't do that method again.
thanks Gary. I have been thinking about alka-seltzer...it is aspirin, sodium bicarb and citric acid. Wonder if it would be effective,
Barry, that sounds interesting. I'm going to try on somethong.😊
I don't know. You can always experiment.
I have a minor allergy to aspirin but that's from ingesting it. Can spraying it on the tomatoes really be harmful, or does it get into the fruit?
I wouldnt use it.
I know you asked this a year ago - but thanks! I was wondering the same.
The baking soda and the aspirin they have different ph level ,so are they not react with each other?
Aspirin is okay to go into any spray as an addition. It doesnt do much to change sprays if any.

can you mix the baking soda and aspirin, for use on the tomatoes?
Yep
Do you need to use neem oil mix immediately after mixing? Or you can store for weeks?
Within a couple days.
I wasn’t able to find uncoated aspirins. I bought pain relief powder (845 mg aspirin). It also contains 65 mg caffeine. Will this work?
That will work fine. The coating just clog sprayers
