Yeah, attaching a telescoping controller to a tiny display is neat and all but I don't think that's the hurdle most people are worried about overcoming when making a handheld system (nor do I think most people would consider a handheld system that can't function on its own to actually BE a "handheld system," which are pretty universally capable of standalone operation, even the streaming-oriented ones).
This is a bit like titling a video "I created a new computer" and then plugging some accessories into an off-the-shelf PC.

So, a streaming device, but tethered to a pc. Granted, you don't get the network latency this way, but you'll still need to stay close to your computer in some capacity. Seems like a fun enough mini-project, but I'm not sure people will pay close to 100 bucks for a "handheld" that's practically dead weight without an accompanying pc if this idea was turned into a consumer product.
It's a neat little project that I'm sure viewers can tell you're proud of, but I personally think the title of the video could be a bit misleading, especially considering how you mostly cover SBCs and "true" handhelds on your main channel.

Really neat project for sure, however I agree with most of what the other comments are saying, even with wireless options that would allow this device to not be physically tethered, it is still logically tethered to the external device, not allowing you to travel with only the handheld device. I don't believe that really competes very well against the other devices you eluded to compete against, as the handheld device itself becomes less capable than a typical "dedicated" streaming device.

That's what really frustrates me when people review or create a "handheld" device that relies on either a physical tether or the cloud. In the end, neither is truly a portable handheld. The point of a handheld form factor is to use the device while traveling.
Especially for a physical tether like this one, you can only be about 6 feet away from the host device. That's barely any different than just using longer cables on a regular pc.

I mean, is a ps5 handheld if you plug up a raspberry pi screen to it? That was rhetorical. No, its not. Neither is my phone using steam link. Its also not really under $100 if you have to buy an $800 computer to run the games. What a shame. Anyone thinking of doing this would be better off just with a steam deck considering your price is closer to $1000 and you cant even move away from the cords.

For the controllers I used the Nixy Joycons and glued the joycons strap rails on both sides of the monitor. The problems I came up with are the screen quality that is terrible, the joycons signal, that can't hold the connection if I'm only 2 meters away from the PC, and the monitor size, that is just too much to hold comfortably (14 inch). In the end I just ended up buying an Gamesir X2 Pro and using on my tablet for streaming from my computer, but if I was really short on money I would have keep working on this project. There are plenty of portable LCDs options on the market, and one with a 7 or 8 inch screen will be a perfect size

No matter how much money we have, we must know the value of the item we buy.
I've never seen a recommended video with dislikes close to 60% like this. Think is also funny, buy a handle and have a screen. Then need PC to play games. Oh, it's like you're watching TV and your phone at the same time. That money, I would rather make up for more money to buy a phone with a Super AMOLED screen. Or an old LG phone with a 2k P-OLED screen for about $120. Connecting to a 5Ghz network with 180mpbs is also smooth enough at home. What a memorable lesson. Anyway thanks for letting me know what value for money is.

If you're going to go down this route You would be able to attach the screen to a regular controller and play games that way which is way more comfortable. Think of it like a Game boy advance SP instead of a regular advance.
    Or an Nvidia Shield.

I'm with many others that this simply isn't a "handheld" as the title would suggest. Since it needs to be tethered to a computer, it's not a handheld. It's a controller for a very much not handheld PC.
But don't let that criticism discourage you! I don't see this as a "bait-and-switch for clicks" as others do, simply a difference in view on terminology. This is still a really cool project, with very real applications! When my back simply can't handle sitting in my computer chair, this would be awesome for playing my PC games from the comfort of my nearby bed, and it's visually superb. Though, honestly, if it's already going to be tethered to the computer, I don't see any practical need to add in a battery unit unless going fully wireless. One wire, two wires, what's that practical difference at that point?

The big downside with this screen is the display latency. It has about 2-3 frames of lag according to the Time Sleuth.

I got it! I got the screen and the control. I’m not a fan of the layout of the control, but nothing I can’t get used to, I’m going to try to find a good micro usb ribbon cable for the touch, I don’t really see myself using it that much, only thing it needs is a small aux speaker, there aren’t too much options online.

Bro this isn't a handheld at all. This is just a controller with display. The thing that's the brains of the operation can't fit in your hands while playing so it's not a handheld. 3ds, psp, ps vita, switch, Gameboy, PC handhelds (and yes other people made actual working hand helds) , and etc. This was a complete shame you showed all of us. Even if you didn't make an actual one for $100 I think we'd all prefer you just make an actual one so it gives us the right idea for ours if we choose to make one. Most of us are willing to spend a little over $100 easy. Most of us are aware of the possibility of it being a little bulky with first couple prototypes, it needs a battery and the brains. 😅 Honestly though what would you even use this for. If you're already staying home and can't achieve more than 60hz anyways might as well just put it to your TV with a desk top.

it misses the point of a handheld though. The idea of a handheld is that you can play games on the go, either retro games on its hardware or stream AAA titles from whatever platform you already have. This is what we really want. A powerful ARM device (snapdragon powered, obviously) for Android gaming and emulation, with 5G, WiFi 6 and with a 16:9 screen. Some people don't understand that a 16:9 5.5" feels vastly different and much more comfortable to that of an 18:9. Big manufacturers come up with "gaming phones", how hard is it to adapt the hardware and make the necessary changes to make a proper handheld, for fuck's sake...

This would be a great setup for a non-portable handheld (as it is now). But the OG that I am, "handheld" means good to use anywhere. I'd splurge a little more on a used cellphone with the right Snapdragon processor and it will work.

  • @XSpImmaLion

Cool project and all, I attempted something like this in the past... but you know what always makes me angry about all of this? The fact that lots of us are already carrying around screens ranging from pretty good to awesome, but we cannot make use of them for stuff like this for lack of ports and standards.
For instance, my tablet has the perfect size, battery, form factor and weight tied to one of the best screens I've ever owned... it'd be perfect to use with a Steam Deck, other portables, mini PCs and whatnot to experience things with a bigger screen.
And yet, nope, I'd have to go with an external monitor solution for that. Why, oh why? Why the heck we still don't have universal standards wireless and wired for portables on video and audio so that we can make use of the hardware better?
Also, even trying to go the DIY route, I still haven't found a good solution to use those panels from say, an older tablet or a tablet in which something other than the screen broke, to prop up an external monitor by myself. It's just kinda infuriating. I don't want to throw away these things, I wanna continue making use of it... oh well.
