  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her seventh straight Budget for the fiscal 2024-25 today. This is the year’s second - an interim one that was presented in February and a full one today. This is because an incumbent government cannot present a full Budget just before general elections. Faye D’Souza is joined by Dr Jayati Ghosh and Prof Arun Kumar to decode the key takeaways.

Excellent discussion. Prof Arun Kumar is perhaps the only one talking about billions of rupees in black money that influential people keep hidden in real estate and gold. These are the ones that can't be taxed and whose wealth keeps growing no matter what, jacking up the prices of real estate even in the pooresr regions. They are actually far more harmful to the conomy than any one industrialist, although I agree that there should be some kind of tax on the super rich. Again, I doubt that even congress will hurt these categories of priveleged people because they fund political parties.

Myopic views, surprised to see economists batting for MSP over increasing agri productivity, ensuring crop losses are prevented by insurance and formal future markets to ensure agreeable prices to farmers.
Disguised employement in agri implies we need other sources to mop up employment, either manufacturing or services which the new internship+employment schemes plan to do.

But then why wouldnt the govt. listen to economists and get started in the multiplier effect through empowering the MSMEs and agro industries and rural development initiatives?
    Are the economists wrong?..
    Is our understanding wrong?..

@@Uff1234 I did not say no discussion. Yes by all means voice your views. However to say everything is negative does not make sense. There must be something useful. That is a real review of the budget.

    • @Uff1234

@@hematramyadav3865 Because the budget is hardly positive. A state like Manipur that has the highest inflation rate (12.32%) in the country and which is entering its 15th month of conflict is completely ignored.
And there are hardly any changes in the investments and allocations.
The negatives far far outweigh the positives if there are any.

By the way, your original statement was trying to defend the budget in totality because it was created by a team of experts. This indicates you're guilty of bias as well, what you accuse these economists of. These economists are also financial experts just like the team of government financial experts.

      @hematramyadav3865 Месяц назад

@@Uff1234 In budgeting you can never satisfy everybody. For me after all the experts have reviewed that is the budget they came out with. My point is clear. You can criticise but not keep saying everything is wrong. Also for example you say agriculture allocation is low. Yes but the development is high so it's the focus. We can go on debating this till the cows come home. My point is there are limited funds and each person would have their own priorities. So the government has done what they think is right.

Modi, till now, has not been averse to failure. He was Chief Minister of Gujarat for 12 years and Prime Minister for 10 years. He has always enjoyed the pleasures of position, power, luxurious life and enjoying foreign tours & benefits. Modi has refrained from facing any controversial incidents (Chinese encroachments, Mizoram riots, natural disasters/riots in any state and many more). Courage and skill are necessary to face such dilemmas.
Now a person with such a mindset does not even imagine failure. Moreover, the memories of big scandals and cruel revenge on opponents for so many years make him more distressed and he is struggling to face the present situation. Because of that, his confused state is evident from talking about everything that seems to be untrue.

Take the example of unemployment... we all know AI is here, private sector jobs will reduce.. instead of fearing AI, can we change our courses in school and college curriculum to quickly introduce newer courses?
Can the government give a tax incentive of say 15000 rupees for people pursing courses in AI and skill development ?
These type of solutions are being done in countries like Singapore where the government "cares" for it's people...

taxing the wealth will do more bad than good, many will move out and inheritance tax will eventually be burdening the poor if we learnt anything from our politicians all the taxes that were meant for the welfare for the people are now burdening the poor. the rich will bypass the inheritance through private trusts which normal people have no idea about and eventually the lower high class and middle class will be the ones squeezed as we all know property value is ever increasing so even small income middle class may end up with high value property which they will have to loose with the inheritance tax. what they need to do is bring rules and system to prevent monopolisation of any industry and increase sme, it should be made profitable to be an sme than a corporate which no gov will do only this will put more money in many peoples hands instead of a handful of few, unless they talk about increasing msme/sme support and make them more profitable than a corporate producing the same product its a big fat honey laced lie that will bite poor and middle class people in the ass!

We are living in complex times. While these analyses are insightful i suspect that they only tell part of the story as read from their ideological standpoints.
The indian economy is like the proverbial elephant. And the economists describing it are like the blind men (or women) ; each touching a part of the animal and taking it for the whole.
As a citizen of India I'm not sure anymore that the Government (not only this but future ones too) can be relied upon to make all citizens happy all the time.
Every Government has its own agenda that inspires its vision. And this vision will always be a partial one. It will focus on a certain class, activity or sector at the expense of others.
Technology - particularly AI and automation - is another disruption waiting to happen. No government can anticipate its impact.
Perhaps all that a government can do (and ought to do) is set the ground work for good quality primary and secondary education (including technological skilling), affordable nutrition, reliable health care and dependable public infrastructure .
Leave the rest to the people to figure out !!

Modi is PM for the past @ 10 years . Let us analyze the reasons for which Modi was elected as PM.
Is it because of his sacrifice, talent , administrative skills , reliability, leadership qualities , integrity , ect which are essentials to be a leader forget about being great leader.
He manages to continue as PM because ‐ being a gujarati he is master in marketing . He is skillful in marketing POLITICS by selling RELIGION, CASTE , LANGUAGE ect.
People of this great nation were happy , peaceful , patriotic by adopting UNITY IN DIVERSITY. Modi wants UNIFORMITY AT THE COST OF UNITY.

It can be inferred from the past 10 years of prime minister modi's misdeeds/mismanagement, Modi doesn't have the ability / skill/ talent to manage coalition govt.
From the way modi always speaks so INDECENTLY ( most hateful , divisive in nature , unparliamentory ) , lowering the Status , Dignity of the position of a PRIME MINISTER
    * Modi /BJP always waiting and ever ready and crosses all standards of decency to amplify isolated events.
    * Modi / BJP, will add masala to even silly matters and blow it out of proportion.
    * Modi always talks about IRRELEVANT SILLY MATTERS, neglecting CORE ISSUES LIKE UNEMPLOYMENT, INFLATION & TOPICS OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE .
    * They NEVER talk about thier achievements of past10 years and the plan for the future.
    * Modi always talks about VERY OLD ISSUES,topics ( POSTMORTEM) about Pandit Nehru ect.
