Hey Mike! Great video once again. I enjoy seeing your channel catch some steam. Could you possibly post the tab to this song on your website?? I see that it is missing
big Jack, thanks man. I appreciate that. yeah, it's been slowly growing and a few people are chipping in and helping out. Unfortunately I wasn't doing tabs for these earlier videos. If you wanna pitch in a few bucks you'll be providing tabs to the 14k people who have viewed this video and the 14k more that are sure to view it in the coming years! I'll even credit you on the tab. "Time for Mike to tab this out provided by Big Jack. Dont forget it."
Really nice man! Finally someone who makes a nice tutorial, even understandable for me as a beginner :) Only thing I'm not sure about.. shouldn't you make a full F chords shape when playing the "6 / 3+1 / 6 / 2 - 3" ? Because the 6th string sound weird to me if it's open, sounds more accurate with finger on first fret, so basically just a F chord.
thanks, man! Glad the video was helpful and easy to follow along. Please, sub, like, and consider monthly support so you can help me tackle the entire Townes catalog for everyone! As for your note. You still play the 6th string with the 1st fret down. I'm pretty sure I never say to play it open. But no...the left hand "shape" isnt a full F chord, because if you barre it then your pinky isnt free to do any of the cool and classic Townes tricks. I'm playing the 1st fret with my left hand thumb over the neck (as does Townes and a lot of these outlaw country fingerpicking guys). Does that make sense? If you still are confused timestamp in the video what you're talking about and I'll double check. If you're having trouble with the F chord I just made a video "that damned F chord" that might be worth checking out.
Is there Any good beatles, rolling Stones, zeppelin, classic riffs you would wanna teach? Also do you ever play with a pick? This is also an epic guitar part. VERY NOICE
Hey Duckin' Nark. All those bands are great. I do play with a pick, but I'm not sure I'd do those bands. Aren't there pretty good guitar tutorials and tabs out there breaking that stuff down? If you're stuck on something specific let me know and if it's worth putting the time into I'll do it. Keep at it!
Guy, i prefer my nylon. I use the electric so I have less variables. I dont want to have to mic my acoustic and worry about bleed and inconsistent tone (i move too much and dont have an acoustic/electric). The Gretsch I just direct line into my audio interface. And in post add a little compression and reverb. Keeps things simple for me and clear and clean for the listener. model? ah, haha i've been asked a dozen times and can never remember. They should be sponsoring me! ;) Maybe a 5120..? It was about 600 bucks new.
yes, what a beautiful song. I'm trying to find the time to tackle the entire Townes catalog! haha. If you're eager for one go to the Sponsor a Song tab at MikesMusicMethod.com

There is no need to '"shift'' your grip like that. When you play "the bend" you can use your index finger and middle finger instead of using your thumb and index finger. Top 3 strings for thumb and keep your index, middle and ring finger on the bottom three strings.
@@MikesMusicMethod From the very beginning after the first base note you play thumb + index finger instead of index finger + middle finger on your right hand. You say at 59 seconds that the thumb patter is "really crazy", I just thought you don't have to move your thumb "all the way down" to the third string as around 3:40 you shift your hand and start playing the third string with your index finger. It's not that it doesn't work but it's better technique to not move the hand position when it's not necessary. (just pointing it out since it's a tutorial) cheers!

I have been waiting for this for so LONG I should have requested it
Edit: 15:35 I was totally gunna ask about that one part😂
hahaha. I knew you were, you bastard. ;) What did you think? Did I explain it well? Can you play it? I thought it was gonna be on the easy side, but it ended up being a difficult one with lots of retakes and edits on my part in an attempt to simplify, calrify and shorten the explanations. But I feel like the more I'm doing these the better I'm getting. I'm gonna be doing the epic "deep river blues" soon and have been hashing away at it for weeks now.
@@MikesMusicMethod oh no trust me your tutorial on this song is way more step by step than the 2 others I've seen trying to play this song. This song is extremely complicated but if I were going to take a crack at it your video would be my go to. And you explained it just fine the walking blues part only occurs once so it's easy to fit in there, its also my favorite part of the song next to the long bend lol
The other good tutorial on this song has no voice and doesnt explain the thumb changes so this is definitely the best video to learn this song
This is really helpful! thanks! I don't have the finger skills, but I try to interpret it to the best of my abilities, while trying to honor the original -
You're welcome, jeff. Glad you got value from the vid. Check out my playlist: Travis Fingerpicking: ruclips.net/p/PLim_0PRqdn-DCjVoJEe5bkOUijH7f56Ra

thanks so much! this video is great, you did a really good job explaining all the nuances of the song. really excited to add this to my repertoire :]
Glad it was helpful! Please sub and consider the Patreon bucket. What song next!?
After 9 hours I'm 11 minutes through the video - ain't nobody gonna break my stride..
hahahaha i laughed out loud. Keep it up man! 9 hours is actually impressive, this song took me 20 years. sub!
@@MikesMusicMethod I think I finally got it, who knows how many hours later. Thanks Mike!
Thank you! I love townes, i also love delta blues, sadly ive not practised much of either during my time as a guitar player.
The travis style picking is definitly something i struggle with, it goes agains some of my muscle memory of finger picking songs ive played over the years.
Gonna practise this every day til it sticks!

Anton, you crazy Swede, you can do it! Check out my Travis Picking playlist and I walk you through the entire process. Be in touch. Keep me posted on the journey! ruclips.net/video/M1GG4Q4Hyiw/видео.html
Guess I was too busy practising to answer. Im actually able to somewhat play it now thanks to you! Woohoo!
I'd argue that Marie is his most depressing song.
It's certainly a contender!

dude. thanks. The value for value in action. Much appreciates, Jeff. Let me know how it goes!
@@MikesMusicMethod What a beautiful arrangement you've added. Thank you - I love buying your TABs because it shows that my own ear is pretty good, I'm usually within 60-70 percent and the rest i make up, but your tabs take it next level. This is awesome

thanks, perry! More Townes in the works! I've got a good half dozen that i've figured out and learned, but now it's finding the time for the videos!
you're amazing, thank you so much :D
You're welcome! did you learn it?
@@MikesMusicMethod ohhh yeahhhhh I’ve been practicing all day long 😆 couldn’t have done it without you! 🤍🙏🏻
Hey Mike on the part with the second small bend. There's an E minor shape but you don't hit those strings so you can give the left hand a rest except for the bend....
good catch! I'm still learning. ;)
Watching this made me realize how much of a genius he truly was. What a loss.... :(
Please do “Rake”-TVZ it’s sooo catchy, I NEED it 😁
It's on the list! But the list is long. Consider sponsoring it to bump it!

Really good tutorial !
Waited so long for a good one !
Could you put the tabs together so its easier to follow ?
Not enough time now. But if you do a tab I'll share it with the entire youtube community and give YOU the credit. yah? Yah!? Convincing!?
Really nice man!
Finally someone who makes a nice tutorial, even understandable for me as a beginner :)
Only thing I'm not sure about.. shouldn't you make a full F chords shape when playing the "6 / 3+1 / 6 / 2 - 3" ?
If you're having trouble with the F chord I just made a video "that damned F chord" that might be worth checking out.
you're really good at these tutorials. Can you do "Forever" by roy harper?
listening now. never heard this guy before. really light and pretty. thanks for the rec. It's on the list! But the list is long.
Keep at it!
What make and model guitar. Perhaps I should try a hollow body electric. I only play acoustic now but that sounds nice. How do you amp it?
Guy, i prefer my nylon. I use the electric so I have less variables. I dont want to have to mic my acoustic and worry about bleed and inconsistent tone (i move too much and dont have an acoustic/electric). The Gretsch I just direct line into my audio interface. And in post add a little compression and reverb. Keeps things simple for me and clear and clean for the listener.
model? ah, haha i've been asked a dozen times and can never remember. They should be sponsoring me! ;) Maybe a 5120..? It was about 600 bucks new.
This song, tied with Quicksilver Daydreams are my favorite of his songs. Quicksilver Daydreams next??
Rex's blues as well. I was pretty sad Junior and part of Senior year and those 3 helped me through it.
yes, what a beautiful song. I'm trying to find the time to tackle the entire Townes catalog! haha. If you're eager for one go to the Sponsor a Song tab at MikesMusicMethod.com
Your going thru it a little quick for me, do you have a tab of this by chance?
Unfortunately not. This is one of the few of all my videos where I havent doubled backed and made a tab yet. All my later videos have tab for free download: MikesMusicMethod.com has all the tabs i've done. If it'd be helpful I can double back and do that for ya. Send me an email, MikesMusicMethod@gmail.com
There is no need to '"shift'' your grip like that. When you play "the bend" you can use your index finger and middle finger instead of using your thumb and index finger.
Top 3 strings for thumb and keep your index, middle and ring finger on the bottom three strings.
hmm, timestamp me. it's been a while since i've made this tutorial.
"The most depressing song by the most depressing artist" 😂😂😂.... All jokes aside I seriously owe you some cash for all these incredible lessons.
ha. It is!
And glad you're learning from the channel. It's a blessing to be able to spread the love and knowledge. But yeah, any coin buys me time to make more and to keep it free for more people. So please consider. Until then just keep learning, commenting and sharing.
Be well!
i love your lessons but honestly find myself skipping the banter in between instructions but did enjoy your parody haha
No worries. lol. For every one person who's annoyed by the banter I get at least 50 comments of people appreciating the humor and fun. And that's the beauty of it...a simple little button push skips you ahead.
Gotta give me a little leeway. The tabs and instruction are pretty darn good, no?
not annoyed at all i actually like your banter
I watched this in 0.5 speed and it was terrifying
Haha, I can't imagine. Lol
skipping a beat is so hard sometimes hahaha, damn XD
i only count in 4.
:20 hahaha yes. "A Song For" may be even darker, but not quite so classic a composition
I hear ya. His voice was a bit shot for that track so it never hit me like the other ones. But yes, also pretty down and out.
Ohhh poor Townes.
i know. what a sad sack.
Mournful. Not depressing. Mournful...
ha, thanks for the correction. I think in one of the documentaries out there Townes talks about the difference between (i think) "lonely" and "lonesome"...something a normal person doesnt see much difference in, yet he expounds upon it as it if were some huge philosophical mountain of difference.
It's both. It's the embodiment of loneliness, depression, hopelessness, and so much more. A truly sad song by a genius
2nd most depressing song imo. Only surpassed by "Marie"
Ha, you're not the first to say this. And yeah, that one is also pretty damn dark.
Jesus Loves You
i know!
Pretty sure “lungs” is his saddest song.
This is the first time I've given a comment of my own videos a thumbs down! Boo! haha. Clean your ears, SupaFire! Lungs is like a celebratory wedding dance number compared to Lungs. Lungs is like that new hit Dance Monkey or 1999 by Prince. ;) I couldnt disagree more with you on this one. If I ever tutorial "Lungs" i'll have to show you the celebratory step once can do to it, and I challenge you to toe tap to Nothin'.
