    *Afterthoughts & Addenda*
*Where's the fridge?* - it's just outside the kitchen door, in the dining room - there just wouldn't be room in the kitchen so that's probably where it will stay
*Dishwasher* - Never felt the need to have one of these
*Why not induction hob?* - Because we thought about it, and decided we wanted this hob.
*Why not extend the kitchen?* - Impractical due to several reasons - basically there's no space to practically do that, and if there was, the cost would be huge anyway.

This really was a nice discussion of the decisions you make in such a specific, unique kitchen - and I didn't even think hard about the lack of a fridge, given I've had random wandering fridges in the room next door more than once in previous houses. I would suggest the ceramic vs induction hob decision might be worth a discussion in a video at some point - I'm personally in the position where I got really used to an induction hob in my old rental property, and have now bought a house with an older electric hob, and am really struggling to feel any real advantages of it.

@@maxtonuponryInduction cookers work best with certain kinds of cookware. Pans and pots must be ferromagnetic (able to hold a magnet firmly). Some kinds of stainless steel and many kinds of copper bottom pots won’t work or will work poorly. Aluminum and glass cookware won’t work at all of course.
Cast iron is best, and some manufacturers are adding a ferromagnetic layer to their stainless cookware- that will be labeled as induction compatible.
Gas and radiant cooktops are cookware-agnostic.

You mentioned possibly getting an air fryer. We have a toaster oven/ air fryer combo that is wonderful. The only thing to watch out for is that the fan that circulates the hot air tends to focus the heat on one part of the food so it’s advisable to rotate the food during the cook time once or twice. The fan in ours is optional- if you don’t turn it on there’s no focusing as in a regular oven. We use ours in conjunction with our regular oven because it does cook faster than a regular oven in that it comes to temperature quicker and somehow uses less electricity.
(I think ours has an internal volume of two cubic feet (yes, I’m an American). I can and have cooked everything in it short of a large holiday turkey.)
I can’t recall whether you have an electric pressure cooker. I cannot adequately recommend them strongly enough. It drastically cuts the cooking time of anything I’ve put in it from soups to pork tenderloins. It can make breads and cakes (adequately, not terrifically) and pretty much anything else. The “sear” function on some models works better than in others. In your kitchen I would put it near the exhaust fan to remove the steam it will generate.
Do you have a dedicated seed grinder? The thistle seeds reminded me to ask- I know that they are too small and don’t need grinding anyway. The reason I ask is that my wife’s doctor recommended that she consume flax seed because it contains things good for her heart. She uses ground flax seed as a sort of general condiment on soups, vegetables, salads even baked potatoes, everything but meats. I tried including it in the rub for steaks and ribs but it lost the unique nutty flavor. I think cooking it destroys the beneficial compounds. Anyway, you could grind the sunflower seeds into a nut butter. It’s quite good.

@@markfergerson2145 from the audio it sounds to me like the new shrimp cottage oven has a circulator fan making it a convection oven. If this is true, they already, in essence, have an air fryer, as air fryers are mini convection ovens. Having a small convection oven with a good fan and an air fryer may not be worth the space.
I personally love my instant pot (electric pressure cooker). If you get a fancy one it has functions for making yogurt, sanitizing, and more. But any electric pressure cooker will let you cook dried beans without the long soak, and quarter the time of long slow cooks. I don't know how much this has over a well monitored traditional pressure cooker, though, but the set and forget is a lot of help.

I’m glad I spotted this video 11 minutes ago, because I hope this gives me the chance to say thank you Mr. Shrimp. Watching you a couple of years ago, in the midst of Covid, and depression, and failing in my chosen field of study (opera singing), reminded me of all the joy and wonder around me, and how much I still didn’t know about the world. From your nature walks, to growing food and cooking it, to even teaching me about scammers and having fun along the way, they have all taught me something new. I’ve even got to experience the amazing culture of Nigeria through your friend, who I am subscribed to also. The videos you make not only give me a chance to explore the world around me, it also allows me to pass on that amazement and wonder to others. It shows me that singing isn’t what makes me exist, just existing makes me exist, and existing is pretty neat a lot of the time. Anyway I’ll actually watch the video now, but if you read this just know I really appreciate the work that you do ❤

There are different kinds of acorns from different oaks and some will germinate immediately and some wait until spring to germinate. The embryo preserves the latter and so squirrels leave those on, so they can eat those later in the winter. Learnt this from a BBC doc, thanks BBC.

Perhaps you could make a table cloth or napkins and dye them with natural plant dye or something like that. maybe a colorful patchwork design. Get a small affordable weaving loom that makes squares to sew together? Just an idea. Also, love the different varieties of berries you have. We don't have anything like them here in Alaska, USA.

Hi Mike, it occurred to me that your channel is rather like Blue Peter for grown-ups, though with a sad absence of sticky-backed plastic. I have yet to decide which combination of Val Singleton, Peter Purves and John Noakes best fits you, if any, and does it matter - you're you and that's fine by me. Thank you and best wishes from another Mike.

Woooowwwww Mike that kitchen is beautiful!!! My kitchen is also reaaally small (maybe 2mx1,5m) and a small kitchen makes it feel more cozy :) I also put my fridge in my living room, next door.
The retracting oven door is a game changer and the runoff slits in the worktop next to the sink is amazing as well!
Must be an amazing feeling to have such a pretty and thoroughly renovated kitchen.

26:43 I'll admit, at some point during the kitchen reconstruction I had the thought of "why don't you remove the old back wall and turn the retaining wall into the new back wall, thus giving you more space?" But then I gave it some more thought and realised that a) you've probably thought about that, too, and b) it's gonna add so much cost to the project, you'd probably be able to redo the kitchen two times over.

I'd love to see you do some amateur blacksmithing. I've seen people make a simple Japanese woodworking utility knife called a Kiridashi. Simple little project if you can overcome the challenges of annealing and tempering and have an old file as a volunteer. Plus, if you do it, then I can copy your homework so to speak.

I really love your backsplash tiles! I would have those in my kitchen in a heartbeat. Jenny did a wonderful job installing them, too; better than some professional jobs I've seen.
I like your not boring chair, too. A great improvement. It seems Jenny's a very handy person to have around.
I completely agree with you about the grey/beige trend. I have a disreputable old sofa that I got for free 20 years ago when it was donated to a rummage sale and no one bought it. It's well past its best-by date and overdue to be replaced, but I've put it off because I will not get a grey or beige one, and that’s all I see.
Funny story. One of my neighbors has a grey house that I see from my front window. A few days ago when I looked out, it had been painted a pretty seafoam green. It looked much prettier. I was about to text them to say how pretty the new color is, when something distracted me. And a good thing, too. The next day the house was grey again. The pretty seafoam green turns out to have been the primer. 😒 I'm glad I didn't rave to them about what an improvement it was. 😮🙃😄

Congratulations to you both on your new kitchen. Good job. I’m so pleased it worked out. Mine was a disaster so I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how yours went. Jenny did an excellent job on the tiling, that’s my favourite bit too. I can’t wait to be able to do mine. I have bright green tiles, I agree with you about having cheerful colours about.
The chair looks great too. Eva is very generous to share it with you, how good of Jenny to refurbish it for her.
My house is full of mad patchwork furnishings like quilts, crochet blankets , beanbags and oversized cushions that I made. I can hide them away when I want to tone it down or move them around to create different effects. That way it’s not as overwhelming as if the walls were painted patchwork, might be a bit much even for me, and also I can change things daily if I want to because it’s so flexible. I also recommend oversized dramatic lampshades to jazz up a room. I hadn’t understood before what a difference that makes. And they are good because they are not adding actual clutter and getting in the way.

Regarding the tomato jungle, in our experience of growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, heavy pruning seems to improve them. There are very few leaves on our tomatoes but plenty of fruit and it's much easier to pick them and less chance of moulding etc. Althose cuttings compost really well so nothing goes to waste and theoretically we are using much less water as each plant only gets about 1litre per day.
I will try putting plastic over the top though, we have always intentionally kept the top surface dry to discourage weeds and slugs, didn't know about the surface root thing, but then we do plant them very deep.

Mike, thank you for this video, it is jam-packed with information and creativity. I found myself oddly proud of your dear little saskatoon bush in its first year of bearing fruit. I honestly thought there wasn't much hope of it growing fruit because it would just be too comfortable. My 2 saskatoon bushes are now over 2 metres tall and are great producers but they live in grow zone 3b with intense heat and sun in June and July and winters often at -38C, never mind the wind and drought. I think your saskatoon may have the best happy garden. 😊

Thank you for sharing information about ragwort. In the Northwestern U.S., ragwort is invasive and the county where I live actually requires that it be removed. Just last week I went to help my sister uproot the ragwort plants in her garden. I felt that was unfortunate, because it is indeed a cheerful plant. It's wonderful to see an example in its native habitat, providing a home and sustenance for the Stripey Bois!

Hibiscus tea is normally not made from the flower petals, but from the sepals of Roselle after fruiting. These grow very big and fleshy and make up most of the fruit.
Roselle is quite different from the hibiscus one might know as an ornamental plant. The fruits look a bit alien with the deep red fleshy protrusions, but are very tasty and refreshing when made into a drink.

In Nigeria they make a drink with the dried calyxes of a hibiscus related shrub. Lovely sharp taste and beautiful deep carmine colour. I thought it may be the same as rosella, which I knew to make a good jelly. I tried it and not a vestige of jelling did it make! So not all related (even closely) plants have similar characteristics!

The funberry looks like it's closely related to the salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), though they've probably figured out how to increase its sugar content, as salmonberries aren't very sweet until they're red and at peak ripeness. Definitely a fragile berry, and one worth keeping around for the birds, and snacking on while walking or hiking on trails or foraging while in the back yard.
If you had enough of them you could turn them into a spread on a bit of bread, scone, muffin, or crumpet, or bake them into a miniature pie or a fruit danish pastry. But alas, 3 berries is barely enough for a garnish.

I planted elderberry saplings from the Woodland Trust, because I didn't think slugs would eat them.
    I was wrong. 😱
A couple survived and I put copper tape around them.
How I hate slugs. I don't put any nasty stuff out to kill them. There is a hedgehog. Come on hedgie, tuck in!
The self seeded oaks and beeches are fine. The garden isn't huge and it's a rented property, but it will be decades before the oaks are a problem.

The last few years where I am, we've barely been able ot get any growth at all, and what has grown has utterly failed to produce a good crop. May have to consider figuring out a system for doing just what you did in your greenhouse.
