Sometimes fruit trees purchased from a nursery have been grafted into a different rootstock. If so, sprouts that grow from the bottom of the tree (well, where else would they grow - duh!) will not be the fruit tree you expect because they're growing from the rootstock.
Safety suggestion: When you build the new fencing, lay down fencing horizontally on the ground on the outside of the new fencing. This prevents dogs from borrowing under the fence because they can't dig through the horizontal fence to get under the regular fencing. It doesn't have to be ugly. You can let dirt accumulate on top or add your own dirt and let plants grow in top. As long as they run into it a few inches down when they try to dig their way in, it will be effective. By the by, my money is on them having dug/squeezed under the electric fencing as their way in. It's great that you were able to rescue them. Best of luck. Take care.
You’re right as the next night they came back and tried to dig underneath so it’s definitely how they got under the other fencing! We will be implementing a predator skirt around the permanent enclosure and will show our current set up in the next video 😊
Hi Theo, I can fully sypathise with your back problems. I am now a 72 year old Ex-Pat, living in Germany since 1977 and in the late 80's I severely damaged my back. I was hospitalized three times until I met this really good Physiotheropist, who explained about the muscles running vertically left and right of the spinal colomn becoming weaker as we age unles we do something about it, because when they are weak they no longer hold the discs in place and nerves get pinched (pain). She taught me a really good excercise which I still do today and it only needs about 10 minutes per day. Lie flat on your back with one leg straight out and the other with the knee up and the sole of your foot as near as possible to your bottom, flat on the floor. Then push down on the raised leg and the opposite elbow. Don't raise yourself off the floor, just keep pressure on these points for about one minute. After that, relax for a minute and then do the same with the opposite leg and elbow. Keep this up for maybe 10 minute per day and the muscles left and right of your spinal cord will strengthen and stop you pinching nerves. I sincerely hope you will give this a go, because it solved my problems and I was working in the construction trade until I retired in 2016 without ever having any repeats of my earlier bad problems.
Fruittrees are grafted onto roots, its the only way you can control the sort of fruit it will produce, so if the sprouts come from the bottom, they will most likely not produce quality fruit, but what you can do is let a stem grow, and then graft a twig from one of the favorite trees, that way you take advantage of the developed root from the damaged tree, and the new one will grow very fast, once the graft cachtes on.
There are dogs that can jump over fences and your fence would be an easy jump for them. It needs to be at least 8 feet tall to prevent the jumpers from getting in. Also, the best protection for all the animals, including the kitties, are farm dogs. They are loyal and protective. Getting a couple will keep all of you safe. There are particular breeds that make especially good guardians. I know you’re cat people, but you love animals and each dog has its purpose. Also, when you’re away it would be less of a concern for you.
Bea not sure if you’d both like this, but I have a juicer and juice lemons. I mix in a little water and make lemon ice-cubes with it. I put it in water and drink that instead of pop! My husband will now drink up to 60 oz. A day. He never drank water before always drank beer. He said he feels so much better now that he has cut out the beer and pop.
I raised dairy goats in the States for years. I would never do it without livestock guardian dogs. They were not like household pets, they were full time coworkers. Lived with the goats and chickens and everyone was safe.
I am so sorry to read about the dog attack. You may need to think about erecting some higher fencing inside your electric fences. My lurcher can jump a 7 ft fence and once dogs know you have livestock, they are likely to return. If they got hold of the small goat, she wouldn’t stand much chance. Sending all best wishes xx
Guys chances re the new shoots from the roots are not tree’s you want. Most fruit trees are grafted to root stock. The root stock tree is not a commercial producer, just strong disease resistant
Never underestimate the height a dog can jump. You would be shocked. Your fence could be a little higher for more safety. Love your vids and all the best with the new enclosure.
You guys deserve all the luck and happiness, air con, space, hot tubs, you have worked really hard, and gone without, and now its so lovely to see you in such a beautiful space.
If you decide to try to allow the damaged trees to attempt to regrow, cut them above the "root stock". Frequently, trees are grafted to a root base of another variety, as it may have better root properties. Cutting above it may encourage growth from the top instead of the root stock which may not be as good a fruit producer as the graft. If you are trying to salvage the sprouts growing from the roots, I would find the healthiest one and trim the rest. You could wait and see which ones look best towards the end of the season before trimming. Otherwise you just end up with a messy cluster. If the trees are growing from the root stock, it doesn't mean they wont be good, just might not be a popular variety, or not as prolific. (Robin E.)
I was just wondering if you could do your own grafting onto the root stock? Might be worth your while to investigate how to take cuttings from the healthy trees and grafting onto those roots that survived. (Robin E.)
It looks like some of those trees were grafted, so don't cut to low, cut above the bulge or you'll be growing root stock. The spouting from the ground is probably root stalk, and probably won't bear well. Grafting is popular in Italy and Portugal ask around and see if they will come and look at your trees and show you how to do it to support your trees.
Thank goodness you got to your goats before Mathilde was more seriously injured. The poor creatures would have been terrified. Your animals really do have the best life. You can see how much they trust you. Love how they follow you Bea. I do not believe the fence is high enough to stop dogs getting in as dogs could jump over.
Don’t know if you’ve considered other Guardian Stock animals! Of course the Portuguese Cattle dog, but the Great Pyrenees are specifically good for sheep and goats. Llama and donkeys are also good. I’ve seen a Llama stomp a coyote after the herd to death!
Aka Filipa. I am also an animal lover. I am so happy that you arrived on time and saved your so gentle goats from those vicious dogs! Get some geese. They are also good at giving the alarm. 🥰
So glad Matilda is okay and the other goats. What a horrific experience to go through. It’s so nice you have options on your property and could move them closer to you and the chickens. Thank goodness Bea was close by and heard the dogs and was able to get there quickly. God bless you and your Homestead.
Donkeys are ideal companion animals, fierce and fearless, and great protectors of their barnyard companions! Our sweet fuzzy donkey would chase off any coyote foolish enough to attempt to come in to our pasture. Also, there is a breed of Portuguese donkey - the "Burro de Miranda" that is nearing extinction and needs rescuing - they have lovely dispositions, are extra nice companions while still being very good at guarding against predators.
In Australia we call fenced off areas on a Farm/Property Paddocks. Often called north, south, East, West Paddock, top or bottom Paddock, you could even name each Paddock after each animal like Tild's Paddock, Gingie Bear Paddock, Fernando's Paddock, mind you Gingie & Fernando would be better names for different forest trails! Hope you feel a lot better soon, especially Tild's after such a shocking experience. Your content is always great, Love It!
My deepest Condolences, poor little Matild took it so well🙏happy to see you are all ok though💞 Admire you both so much❣ your animals are lucky to have such BEAUTIFUL GENEROUS KIND SOULS to care for them❣ 💯In my next life i want to come back as an Indie Projects Pet🐾😍What a LIFE! Would ABSOLUTELY Love to come help on the HomeStead in Portugal 😋 Maybe a Patreon meetup & workshop ?🤗 Sending Great Gratitude & Appreciation, Big Blessings & Love, Many Mercies & Joy, All the Compassion & Luck🍀🙏✌🏽✊🏽❤
So sorry to hear about Matilda 😢 glad she okay. I've often wonder why you haven't got a guard dog, my Dad had Collie dogs, great for looking after cattle, plus kept the foxes. Maybe a trained pup to grow up protecting the lives stock? Also , love the fact that new shoots are now growing from the damaged trees, definitely a phoenix moment xx❤
Thanks Kaz! We’re so glad we got to her in time, there’s quite a few reasons why we’re hesitant to get a dog which we’ll talk about in the next video 😊
So glad the goat survived the attack. It’s good that you’re moving them closer to you. You guys are wonderful with your animals. Please be safe and God bless.
Theo, you should take a wheel barrel with you, to put the branches & stumps into as you go along. No point leaving them on the ground to only have to go back to pick them up again.
Something similar happened where my daughter goes to Riding for the Disabled in Inverurie , Scotland . The pony ( Tony ) she rides there was attacked and bitten by dogs . They weren't wild dogs but were off the lead and the owners weren't in control of them . She had a stroke during the first lockdown and is now paralysed on her left side. She always rode horses so this is very important to her . Hopefully Tony will be able to be ridden when he has healed. These ponies are so well trained . I love watching how you care for the animals and the land . Take care xx
Sorry too hear about Matilda😪 If wild and hungry, dogs would be able to jump that fence for sure!! Aircon units in this heat is a MUST have, I would pack up and leave Spain tomorrow if we didnt have aircon😉 Takecare xxx
I would call it a pasture. Wild dogs are so frightening. They'll also go after people so be very careful. When you're hiking, take something significant to protect everyone.
Poor Tildy, so so sorry. - - - You have a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera)! I saw it around minute 29. Still might be young, but grows very fast and huge, and one day it will have those gorgeous yellow "tulips" in May.
Something you might want to consider getting are some guardian donkeys. They hate dogs and will chase them out and away from your goats. If not one of them maybe a Lama or a guardian dog for your goats, but donkeys would be the easiest I would think.
Poor Mathild my heart broke when you told us what happened to her. Have you thought about getting a guard dog for the animals? Also the football pitch could be known as The Paddack!!! I hope your back is back to full strength very soon Theo! Loving your blogs. Love from Wales. ❤
With the title of the video I was almost afraid to watch it‼️ I knew it wasn’t going to be good news, Thank goodness you made it to the goats in time to save them‼️ Give the a hug for me‼️❤️ Great job opening up the trail Bea😊👍❤️‼️
Sounds like you have wild dogs living on miracle mountain. A couple donkeys make great guard dogs. Theo protect your back wear a back support. And both of you get some hiking poles, they give good support when hiking up your mountain area. Bea its a good job you are on the ball. Good to hear Matild will be ok. 💚
It's great to see the new growth but I would be cautious as alot of fruit trees are grafted so the regrowth my not be the type of tree you are wanting. I would hate for you to grow them on for a few years to then find out they're the grafted root tree regrowing and not your desired fruit trees. hope matild recovers quickly ❤
I’m so glad the goats are all okay. I could just picture Bee going into “Momma Bee” mode to scare off those dogs!!! You two are so good at rolling with the punches and shifting your priorities on a dime! Thanks for bringing us along.
Theo you need too get yourself and Bea some Tracking poles they are a great help while you are hiking around the property . They will help you balance especially on the slope ground coming down. Which will help your back so much !😊
BEA on the peach tree sprouts.... Deep South Homestead did a video a week or two ago about the fall equinox. I would think that on that day it would be a good chance to try something with the extra sprouts. I don't know if Portugal has arborist in your area but I would check... because they would be more experienced with the area and weather and when to replant and prune. Some trees are pruned after its cold so the sap goes down. Best of luck and praying Matild recovers well and the bad dogs stay away.
I am so happy to see that you are moving along with the culling of your dead fruit trees. This will give you room to plant new varieties or simply leave the ground fallow so the remaining trees can enjoy the nutrients and moisture. If possible, have the stumps ground flush to the ground so Theo can mow the area with the tractor without concern. All of the dead material should be removed from the orchards and burned to prevent the spread of disease which the dead trees may be carrying. For instance, Bea mentioned the fungus all of the dead trees display. When in doubt - burn it. First rule of integrated pest management (IPM) 😊
I have scoliosis, lay on your back and lift both legs just off the bed together, hold till it feels hard then slowly lower legs do it morning and night , it took 2 weeks to make my tummy strong enough to carry my damaged back with out too muchpain, for a normal spine should be quicker, but never stop doing it because once you got a bad back it's going to happen again, this helps to keep you stood up
Those are shelf fungus, very common in dead trees. If trees don't leaf out at all, they are likely dead, even if there is 'spring' in the branches. You might get a new sucker growing from the root, as you saw, but you'd be best served by cutting them down. I noted that someone above mention the rootstock / grafting issue. These resprouts may very well be from the rootstock only, but you dont have much choice - it's the only part that is still alive. As for the suckers; excellent question! You need to choose the strongest one and prune out the rest. You might have to do this a couple times, but after a while the stongest one will be putting out enough hormones fom the apical meristem (the growing tip) to suppress the dormant buds in the bark below them. Good luck!
❤❤❤❤. I believe that the tree you see growing from the roots of a dead tree or not the same tree. I believe they called them suckers? Because they suck the life out of the tree.
So happy that you were able to move the goat enclosure so quickly and hopefully those dogs will NEVER return! Hope your back is feeling BETTER Theo and Bea GREAT “ saw skills”! Thank heavens Miltide is “ back on the mend”!!!🙏❤️🐐
Oh gosh, that's awful! With your love and care, may Matilda heal and remain a happy, healthy companion. I guess people just let their dogs loose in the forest when they are tired of them? Ugh. I'm so sorry this happened. Thank goodness you got there in time.
man I'm sorry that Matild got hurt 💔😞 but I'm really glad that you were able to get there fast and protect all the goats from further harm and got them dogs out the pen & I'm super glad that she's ok 💖 hope theos back gets better soon I'm dealing with my back as well so I feel his pain have a blessed and wonderful week
One of my pugs is called Galadriel and her mother is Evie of Mordor. ❤❤❤and Galadriels daughter is six months old now she’s called Celebrian. Or CBB for short.
My grandparents had peach , cherry all types of apples. If a fruit tree is full grown. They won’t produce again in your life time. If the fruit trees are young they can come back and produce. In the next few years.
So sorry to hear what happened witht he goats and glad they seem to be ok. It is clear to see just how much you care for your animals so I am sure that you will be making sure that all is well for them. I hope your back gets better soon Theo...you should sue the airline for the damage caused...xxx
If the shoots are coming from above the graft, keep it and fence the sprouts after sealing the wound with Lac Balsam. (5' tall (1.5 meter) cage required) If the sprouts are coming from the root stock, cut it down - no question. 😊 Unless you have designs of returning this property to a commercial orchard, leave the pine trees for ecological diversity, please.
So sad to see this. Well done Bea. I follow a guy in America who has a poultry farm and he has Toby, a gaurduan dog who protects the flock and the farm. I think its an Anatolian Shepard or similar, they are bred specifically to live outdoors and to protect the livestock. ❤
💕WHAT YOU NEED are some livestock guardian dogs that live in amongst your animals THEY are FANTASTIC at protecting they live with your animals 24/7 & treat them as there own family💕
Bee, you have over and over proven to be not only one of the two kindest people, a very strong and multi-talented girl, and that there are a lot of "unexplored skills" to be revealed does not come as any surprise to me and all who have been so blessed to follow both of you. Of the many things making you so special and proving your strength, is your courage to share the very hard and difficult times in life. Thank you, Bee and Theo, for being such inspirations, no matter where we are in our lives, at the beginning, middle or end, or how much or little money you've got, there is ALWAYS something to take with us to inspire us to improve our lives and the lives of others, in each and every one of your videos. I'm not a religious person, as I don't know of any religious book that wasn't written by men hundreds of years ago, that can inspire me when I know so many horrible and evil people have used and still today are using the same book, the same texts, to do harm to others, no matter how many very good people also use the same book to do good. I prefer to find inspiration around me, and in people who are "just doing the right thing", not because they have to, or someone is telling them to, but because they want to, and they have the ability to show how a perfectly imperfect world can benefit so many, and without causing any harm to anyone. Thank you, Bee and Theo, and all my co-subscribers who have made it possible for Bee and Theo, to share their life, their perfectly imperfect life, with us, and give us so so much! Peace and love to each and one of you! / Pia ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Funny how extraordinary a red squirrel is for you. 😊 In Germany we only have red squirrels so the brown ones I saw in London were exciting to see for me.
You need livestock guardian dogs. And definitely a pair. Ackbash are smaller than most but have been used forever with sheep or goats. I have Ackbash that I was importing from Turkey and already working at 12 months.
Just a thought: as you have a lot of pine trees around remember the "precession-catapillars"! Very dangerous for animals especially dogs (in case you decide to get a guard dog)....cats & humans also, take care during the months they migrate into the soil (dont know which months they are active in your area. 💖🐾💖
Two dogs sounds like they live in the area, I'd ask around. A hot fence about a foot off the ground on the outside will get any animal trying to get in after the goats. We used hot fence for years and it's cheap to set up and so worth it. So happy Matilde is going to be okay.
Here in the USA they use a Root Stock to graph fruit trees on. You can usually see that there has been a graph above the soil line. So just cutting down low can get you a SPROUT of a different and perhaps not desirable tree. Perhaps a local nursery can advise you
Im so sorry the dog's got to the goats. You might give thought to (The Gaurdian) Great Pyrenees puppy you can raise with the goats. They are sweet, layed back but very protective of their goats. They are what we had for our goats to keep the wild animals away. They will also bark warnings , you'd know sooner something is up. I'm glad she's ok. 💜🕊
Dogs can jump fences you may want to make the established fence higher. Also look for a donkey, or llamas and possible guard dogs to be in with your precious animals. Thanks for your great videos.
Theo you should try ice tub not hot tub. I have back issues from working electrical. The stretches you are doing are a must . I recommend try find different stretches' as some unusual ones helped me more then ones I could think of myself. Like a back wall crawl for example. Dogs can climb the fences I recommend the electrical movable type.
Just be careful of the new shoots growing from the old roots in case the original tree was grafted onto a different root and therefore the new growth isn’t actually the plant you think it is
Most fruit trees are grafted. The desirable variety is grafted onto hardy root stock. Try to find the graft knob on the damaged trees that seem to be coming back. If the volunteers are coming above the graft you're golden. However, if they're coming from root stock you're not going to get the same quality fruit. It does however present you the opportunity to try grafting for yourselves...another knotch in the farmer belt. Look up grafting and check with your local ag agent to see when would be the best time to give it a go.
You may need a 6-8ft high fence to keep dogs out & protect your lovely goats. Some breeds can climb 12ft high fencing. You are shrinking @Bea and look marvelous ❤
If you are planning on adding more animals, my suggestion is a livestock guardian dog/dogs. If raised with your animals they will fight to the death to keep them safe, not only from other animals but fire too.
Would a taser work with the dogs if they should happen to return. Theo please be sure your back is healed before you return to your hard work. Good to see Bea trimming trees. I would enjoy doing that type of work.
Sending Healing Energy to 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Matilda 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. You guys are doing a great job with securing their safety. A great protector for the goats and chickens could be the Great Pyrenees Dog. A donkey would be great, too. 👍🏼 Just my 2 cents 😉 ❤. I have a GPD mixed with a Kelpie named Willow and she is awesome. Love to you all. ❤
My Dad worked an orchard, and he taught us that the new roots need to be removed, they are below the root stock and won't produce fruit, but they steal nutrients from the original tree
Glad Matilda's ok. Your property is so beautiful and so much land and all those fruit trees!! I know Beas enjoying that big house and now ac to keep cool! Got to have my air conditioner. Been watching y'all since y'all first started on the barn. It really turned out so nice, but now y'all got room to spread your wings. 🦋
Yes, having the animals closer to your house should keep them safer, and making sure predators can’t dig underneath the fence is a must. Poor you, and poor girls must have been terrified 😢 I agree, with someone mentioning here too, it may be a good idea to get a dog to protect the girls and the chickens.
Hi so sorry to hear about the bad luck you are having With your bad back and the problem with the wild dogs attacking the goats both of you take it easy a little bit and take care xx

I know right❤❤❤
It would be fantastic wouldn't it!
Yes! I love them, too!

Hey guys, you should report the dogs attack incident to the police. That sort of thing should be on file. Hope Matilde is feeling better 😢

Thank you! We’re looking into donkeys or geese
Get yourself a donkey, excellent guard and pack animal. 😊
It’s looking likely… 👀
My neighbors have goats. We have coyotes in the area. They have burros that stay in the fields with the goats for protection.

So glad the goat survived the attack. It’s good that you’re moving them closer to you. You guys are wonderful with your animals. Please be safe and God bless.
Theo, you should take a wheel barrel with you, to put the branches & stumps into as you go
along. No point leaving them on the ground to only have to go back to pick them up again.
So happy you saved Matilde ❤❤❤❤❤
You could use solar security cameras so you can check on the goats remotely at night or when your not around
Lamas are also animal guardians. So sorry for poor Matilde. Sending healing vibes, and love for a full recovery. 🧘🏽♀️🕉💜🫂🙏🏽
I would call it a pasture. Wild dogs are so frightening. They'll also go after people so be very careful. When you're hiking, take something significant to protect everyone.
Poor Matild! So glad she’s okay! x
When I lived in Bromley in the early 80s I use to see red squirrels all the time in the park 😍
How lovely!
Get yourself a German shepherd, it will keep the goats safe! I have 2 they are such good protectors.
I’m so glad those dogs didn’t kill any of the goats and They get over wounds and shock of it 😢 great video again the property is just amazing….
Loved your video of taking the goats for a walk and the cats, what about taking the chickens for a walk. Return of the red squirrels is so exciting!
What type of tree would they have been grafted onto? I’m curious what they could be as they definitely look like peaches
I’m so glad the goats are all okay. I could just picture Bee going into “Momma Bee” mode to scare off those dogs!!! You two are so good at rolling with the punches and shifting your priorities on a dime! Thanks for bringing us along.
Sorry to hear of your troubles, as a lover of donkeys i wanted to emphasize on their usefulness for shepperding and defeating dogs/wolfs!
Theo you need too get yourself and Bea some Tracking poles they are a great help while you are hiking around the property . They will help you balance especially on the slope ground coming down. Which will help your back so much !😊
You can tell those are grafted trees . So below the graft you will not get good fruit broth .
Where I live, we have coyotes. We carry either bear spray or pepper spray when walking the trails.
FYI,if a tree is viable you can scratch the bark to reveal green live wood / cambium layer below
I have scoliosis, lay on your back and lift both legs just off the bed together, hold till it feels hard then slowly lower legs do it morning and night , it took 2 weeks to make my tummy strong enough to carry my damaged back with out too muchpain, for a normal spine should be quicker, but never stop doing it because once you got a bad back it's going to happen again, this helps to keep you stood up
Thanks for the info ❤️
♥️..Donkeys are a wonderful asset to farm animals , plus you’ll learn to love their sound ..they come running to greet you …😊💕🇺🇸
Oh gosh, that's awful! With your love and care, may Matilda heal and remain a happy, healthy companion. I guess people just let their dogs loose in the forest when they are tired of them? Ugh. I'm so sorry this happened. Thank goodness you got there in time.
man I'm sorry that Matild got hurt 💔😞
but I'm really glad that you were able to get there fast and protect all the goats from further harm and got them dogs out the pen & I'm super glad that she's ok 💖 hope theos back gets better soon I'm dealing with my back as well so I feel his pain have a blessed and wonderful week
Hello from northeast Georgia, USA!! Bea, your hair is gorgeous!! I love both the color and style on you!! Love y’all!!
Thank you so much!!
Look how much these goats have learned to love and Trust you!!
Bee I'm so happy that you were able to save Matilda and others 💖 I also fear that the goats 🐐 were a little to far from you❤❤❤❤
With sheep in Australia they put 1 llama. The llama protects from dingos foxes . I wonder if that would work with goats
Well said! ❤❤❤
Eso es porque no has entendido la Biblia. Es impresionante!. ❤
Funny how extraordinary a red squirrel is for you. 😊 In Germany we only have red squirrels so the brown ones I saw in London were exciting to see for me.
Look after that back ztheo, Bee is a loyal, goodun and will be there...good pruning girl ❤
Llamas are very protective of the herd. ❤🦙❤
Perhaps a local nursery can advise you
Thank foodness that you heard the dogs & it wasnt during the night. Hope Matilda makes a full speedy recovery❤❤❤❤
Take us when you go grocery shopping. I’d like to see what it is like in the grocery store near where you live.
So glad everyone is safe. The kindness and love for your animals is amazing. Just what the world needs more of.
Poor you, and poor girls must have been terrified 😢
I agree, with someone mentioning here too, it may be a good idea to get a dog to protect the girls and the chickens.
Hi so sorry to hear about the bad luck you are having With your bad back and the problem with the wild dogs attacking the goats both of you take it easy a little bit and take care xx
Get a Rafeiro de Alentejo from rescue. They will adore their goats, and guard with their lives.🐾🐾🐾
