How to Make a Dog Cone - Cheap and Easy DIY Guide

  • If you need to prevent your dog from licking a wound, you will need to fit him with a cone. Also known as Elizabethan collars, e-collars or recovery collars, they fit around your dog's neck and prevent him from being able to access the wounded area. Learning how to make a dog cone can save you money, and you'll only need to simple/cheap things for this:
    - thick twine (amzn.to/2MkCThJ)
    - pool noodle (amzn.to/2AMAPtA)
Read the full guide here: topdogtips.com/how-to-make-a-...
This DIY dog cone is much more comfortable than a large plastic e-collar. It's also easier to put on your dog, and I think your Fido will be much happier with this than the alternatives you can get from your veterinarian.
"Now, you'll need to cut the pool noodle into small pieces. The smaller your dog's neck, the thinner the pieces will need to be. As you will see in my video guide above, I cut the pieces about 1.5"-2" in width for our Beagle. She has a neck circumference of about 18"."

I have an old lab and she's banging her head on everything with the cone. I tried this and the size of the noodle didn't even entertain the idea that it might slow her down from licking her back leg. It was a delightful headrest. But what I'm getting out of this is that the size of the noodle needs to be in comparison to the dogs head. I could go out and buy 6" foam circles somewhere, and I'll try "netting" more pieces of the noodle together to see if I can make something big enough. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you, everyone, for your comments and brainstorming!
Update: Netting didn't work, it laid too flat. She could still get at her hind leg.
Further Update: I looked for 6" foam and could have ordered some online, but I decided to try taking an old yoga mat and rolling it into 6" diameter pieces that I "sewed" together and then strung together as they did in the video. It almost worked, but she figured out a way to get her tongue between the pieces and get to her back leg.
If I could figure out a way to make a solid 6" doughnut around her head that might work.
    I'll keep brainstorming.

This is GENIUS. I am going to make 2 of these as lifesavers for 2 of my dogs in case they ever fall into the pool and can't find the ladder to get out or sit on. They can wear these every time they go outside just in case my husband turns his back - and he does, even though he won't admit it. On our large acre lot, he'd waste a lot of precious time looking for my baby during which my baby could drown. With this on, my baby's head could stay above water!!! I've been looking for a donut collar for the pool for years but they just don't make them. Saw one ONCE, have never found it since. Traditional dog life jackets are CRAP because they don't hold an exhausted or unconscious dog's head above the water. Your dog could still drown in those. A donut collar is MUCH more practical as a life saving device for a dog or a cat.

This only limits the pet from reaching certain areas! This is NOT ideal. I work at a vet as a tech and professional pet stylist and an owner tried to do something similar to instead of using what we suggested and ripped all his sutures out and had to put him back under to redo his sutures! A LOT of these videos you doing are giving out false and dangerous facts of grooming, home remedies, and diy stuff that are terrible ideas that are not effective nor efficient! Please learn about what you are wanting to teach ppl before you go posting videos! I have been watching quite a few and they're making me cringe at some of the stuff being done and said that are false. You need to know what you're facts before giving everyone else false info.

Do not use foam like the stuff shown. Your dog is likely to try and scratch it off (may even trap his leg) and or rub it off on the floor or against furniture. This makes chunks of indigestable foam pieces that your dog will eat creating another problem. If your dog doesnt do that, great, but there are lot of dogs that will.

Tatian olivier if it’s on your cats body, you can try putting them in a baby onesie. A typical 8-10lb cat can probably wear size 3 month. And go up from there. But every brand of baby clothes is different. If it’s a front leg, try a long sleeved onesie, a back leg maybe baby jammies? They do make baby pants with attached “footies” but the cat could prob wiggle out. Even the skinny pool noodles would be too big by a cats face
