- If you need to prevent your dog from licking a wound, you will need to fit him with a cone. Also known as Elizabethan collars, e-collars or recovery collars, they fit around your dog's neck and prevent him from being able to access the wounded area. Learning how to make a dog cone can save you money, and you'll only need to simple/cheap things for this:
- thick twine (amzn.to/2MkCThJ)
- pool noodle (amzn.to/2AMAPtA)

This DIY dog cone is much more comfortable than a large plastic e-collar. It's also easier to put on your dog, and I think your Fido will be much happier with this than the alternatives you can get from your veterinarian.
"Now, you'll need to cut the pool noodle into small pieces. The smaller your dog's neck, the thinner the pieces will need to be. As you will see in my video guide above, I cut the pieces about 1.5"-2" in width for our Beagle. She has a neck circumference of about 18"."

Thank you, this will definitely help me with my dog to prevent her from biting her butt.
THANK YOU I have a Chihuahua who needed a dog cone. Priced them. $13.99 and 11.99. Found some lower priced. Your DYI made more sense. Thank you God Bless.
A nice tip for this is instead of the rope/twine use a collar instead and just make it a bit bigger.
Pinkdoughnut Productions great idea
Great idea, I was thinking the same thing. So glad to see i'm not the only one with this line of thought. I already have the noodle to make it with.
I always got a bigger cheap nylon collar from the dollar store. Vet will charge you $25 for miserable cone. Total incl tax about $2.50 for this. Always used instead.
Great DIY! And Molly is SUPER cute by the way! I just wanna hug her! Awwe! 😍😍
Wow! Thank you. It’s 3am here in NZ and you have just saved us. This is so awesome! Works amazingly!
It's 3am here in Illinois and I'm watching this as well. 😂
Love this idea and Molly is a sweetheart!
I made one for my small dog and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much.
I have an old lab and she's banging her head on everything with the cone. I tried this and the size of the noodle didn't even entertain the idea that it might slow her down from licking her back leg. It was a delightful headrest. But what I'm getting out of this is that the size of the noodle needs to be in comparison to the dogs head. I could go out and buy 6" foam circles somewhere, and I'll try "netting" more pieces of the noodle together to see if I can make something big enough. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you, everyone, for your comments and brainstorming!
Update: Netting didn't work, it laid too flat. She could still get at her hind leg.
Further Update: I looked for 6" foam and could have ordered some online, but I decided to try taking an old yoga mat and rolling it into 6" diameter pieces that I "sewed" together and then strung together as they did in the video. It almost worked, but she figured out a way to get her tongue between the pieces and get to her back leg.
If I could figure out a way to make a solid 6" doughnut around her head that might work.
I'll keep brainstorming.
I'm thinking of using one of those travel neck pillows 🤔 let's see if it works. At the end what worked for you?
I'm trying to figure one for my big dog too. She has a big skin tag on her leg she won't let heal and the big plastic cone we got makes he bang into everything... she just hangs her head and looks so depressed... its killing my heart :(
Did you have any luck?
Any updates on this? Any luck?
@@jansencaguioa4997 no. Turned out she had cancer so I just let her lick it until we had to put her down. Sorry.
I watched a video and did the bath towel folded and duck taped last night. Worked well. She’s in panic with the cone of shame. Good luck.
This is GENIUS. I am going to make 2 of these as lifesavers for 2 of my dogs in case they ever fall into the pool and can't find the ladder to get out or sit on. They can wear these every time they go outside just in case my husband turns his back - and he does, even though he won't admit it. On our large acre lot, he'd waste a lot of precious time looking for my baby during which my baby could drown. With this on, my baby's head could stay above water!!! I've been looking for a donut collar for the pool for years but they just don't make them. Saw one ONCE, have never found it since. Traditional dog life jackets are CRAP because they don't hold an exhausted or unconscious dog's head above the water. Your dog could still drown in those. A donut collar is MUCH more practical as a life saving device for a dog or a cat.
Thanks a lot for showing and sharing this post . Mary C.
Perfect. Thank you
Awesome!! Thank you 🙏🏽
this worked perfectly for my 15 lb schnauzer. I just cut the piece a little smaller.
Great diy collar
Thank you for this tip. As we speak, my Rottweiler puppy ( more like a Bull/Moose) is being spayed and I think this will be better than the Cone of Shame. Thanks again!
Omg this is the best idea.
great idea ty
Ótima ideia 😉🖒👏
The dog looks at the camera like don't forget to email "us" because I'm in this video with my mommy too.
my dog had surgery and I HATE the lamp shade lol I AM making this ASAP.. thank you
I took a pool noodle and cut it and ran my dogs collar thru it in order to keep her from climbing thru our fence.
Hahhaa.i.agree.very nice.and great idea for a very naughty dog of mine..😂
Excellent!
Thanks so much.
My Dog hated the E-Collar
Good idea!
Molly is beautiful.
Can you tell i need a dog?!
Very good idea.
Have a larger dog
Try showing how to make different sizes
bbarron209 she did show
bbarron209
Really ? Cut a bigger piece of string and put more pool noodle pieces on it .
@@feliciamabrey4108 right. Bc those teeny pieces of pool noodle will totally prevent my 80# dog from licking anything 🙄🤣🤣🤣
I haven't been able to make it work well. My dog can still lick his rear leg. I have tried, two, three, even a towel first then the noodle collars. Tips on how to make it actually work?
Brian Stampe hi! Did you ever by chance figure something else out that worked???
@@Xtiansldrs I had the same Luck. My dog kept trying to put the pool noodles in her mouth.
So what I did was got a towel.
The smaller bath towels.
Wrapped it like a human neck brace would look.
I used duck tape to keep it wrapped around my puppy neck.
It's working so far.
No more licking anymore.
thanks for this easy to make alternative, but it won't help stop my pup scratching his swollen eye unfortunately,: any suggestions for that situation?
Same!! Did u ever find a solution??
Does this work on large dogs also? I have a 70 pound labradoodle who is in panic with the cone of shame.
This only limits the pet from reaching certain areas! This is NOT ideal. I work at a vet as a tech and professional pet stylist and an owner tried to do something similar to instead of using what we suggested and ripped all his sutures out and had to put him back under to redo his sutures! A LOT of these videos you doing are giving out false and dangerous facts of grooming, home remedies, and diy stuff that are terrible ideas that are not effective nor efficient! Please learn about what you are wanting to teach ppl before you go posting videos! I have been watching quite a few and they're making me cringe at some of the stuff being done and said that are false. You need to know what you're facts before giving everyone else false info.
I am searching here for ideas on how to make/where to buy a collar that a German Shepherd dog cannot get out of or ruin. So far she has overcome two. The swim noodle may work if I can find one big enough. Any advice appreciated.
Exactly! I just made one for my nephew’s 100# Golden Retriever and, unfortunately, it did nothing to keep him from licking a hot spot on his hip and tail☹️ Waste of time…
I’m trying to find something to keep my dog from scratching her eyes until I can get her to the vet tmr!! Any ideas temporarily??
WOW great idea but have you guys hear of the Lick Sleeve???.... is an essential item to have after a knee procedure check it out
Why not just use a towel folded in thirds the long way? You wrap it around the animals neck and tape it on. Much easier.
Hello! Its been a while.
Can you explain more in detail how that would work?
My 7th month old Siberian Husky is on heat and she always takes her diaper off.
I'm not able to buy a dog cone and that why I'm looking for other alternatives; the one you mentioned seems interesting since I have the tools at home.
This worked for me but instead of using thread I use my dogs thin collar thread the collar through the swim noodle I'm just passing the collar
The just fasten the collar
I Tried this.
Unfortunately my puppy kept trying to eat the pool noodles.
It didnt work.
Thanks so much though.
It was a good idea though.
Does this work if the irritation is on her tail?
Molly was a good sport
Will this prevent the dog from licking her front paws?
This does not work. Still able to reach sutures from ACL surgery
I used his collar but it didn't keep him from licking an open sore that was licked to start with.
E collar makes it sound like you're talking about an electric collar.
"E" stands for "Elizabethan" because it looks like those giant collars that women used to wear during that period.
@@Kristine_202 I thought it meant emergency collar lol. But that makes sense too
Are they still able to scratch ears?
I’m a little nervous about using the twin around my puppy’s neck 😱
Whats that blue foam called
JRfoodie lovefun It’s called a “pool noodle “ you can buy them at any pool shop.
I have a yorkie how to make one for her size
I made one for my Yorkie - just cut the noodle to the size you need. I cut 2" sections and kept adding them until it fit around his neck. It worked perfectly.
Do not use foam like the stuff shown. Your dog is likely to try and scratch it off (may even trap his leg) and or rub it off on the floor or against furniture. This makes chunks of indigestable foam pieces that your dog will eat creating another problem. If your dog doesnt do that, great, but there are lot of dogs that will.
I just used the dog collar
hello is good for cats too?
Tatian olivier if it’s on your cats body, you can try putting them in a baby onesie. A typical 8-10lb cat can probably wear size 3 month. And go up from there. But every brand of baby clothes is different. If it’s a front leg, try a long sleeved onesie, a back leg maybe baby jammies? They do make baby pants with attached “footies” but the cat could prob wiggle out. Even the skinny pool noodles would be too big by a cats face
@@amyboyd5760 thank you
I tried it, my dog still licks in the same area, its like he has notjing around the neck.
Hi Molly
Nearly all dogs hate and are very stressed by these collars.
Better to get them a little tracksuit or an inflatable cushion to go around their neck, same prevention, much more comfortable and less stress.
💛🐶❤️
My dog seems to be able to bypass all the e collars I tried . She has a wound for radiation treatment on her right paw. I need a system that keeps her from licking the wound
Any luck on this?
I think I am going to try this... FYI, Amazon carries two sizes of noodles (thickness).
This vet cone is horrible. I want to do your diy but how do I do this so it doesnt touch his neck wound?
Unfortunately, it does not work for large dogs. My dog can get it off her neck in no time, and she was still able to lick her paws even with a lot of pieces attached to the string.
Get two cheap large dog collars thread the collars through the noodle after cutting and then just fasten the collars all is going to cost is $3 at the Dollar tree store
I've tried this several ways and sizes. Didn't work for us.
Why twine & not elastic?
I would think elastic would easily slide off the dogs neck at the dogs first attempt to get it off?
Anybody try the inflatable ring? I did but my Frenchie just stood there and give me the sad 😔
My dog hated the inflatable ring!
My dog is 3 lbs the noodles are bigger than her lol
That looks dangerous 😮,my chuhuwa is crazy he fights out of everything he don't like it I'm sceard he will get tangled up in that .
Don't do this I wasted an entire pool noodle for nothing. No matter how I cut it up it did not work for a 15lb dog. I needed to keep her from reaching her privates so her wound can heal. Just buy the cone at the store.
our girl is 22 kilos and its working for us
Try the big pool noodles
Not going to work for my 86 lbs baby boy 🐶🐕
you need a serious pool noodle!
Be careful, some pool noodles are toxic.
Doesn't work! My dog can still get to his paws.
I used two cheap thin dog collars threaded the collars through the noodle and just fasten the collars
I can see how paws can be reached. My little dog can't reach his groin infected bug bite with this collar.
Gemlover Allday so don’t cut it into pieces?
My dog hates me right now. I sent him to get his balls chopped :( he probably feels so betrayed :( n he wont move with the cone on his head. It terrifies him. :( i feel so bad.
my old dog stood up all night with the cone on poor baby
@@polgara1573 :( yeah i felt bad. He liked the towel from video alot more. And would actually move around. Im sorry tho it is such a shitty feeling doing that to them :( lol
@@markavellimedina2857 our girl goes in this morning for hers she not gonna be happy!
@@polgara1573 good luck!
@@markavellimedina2857 thanks it works really well just got back with her and all is well thanks again
My dog ate it off😒
Does not keep a dog from chewing! Twine is dangerous! Dogs might strangle themselves trying to get it off! Very dangerous idea, please don't put your dog in danger by trying this!!!!!!!
Plastic cone works better. Don't try this bad advice.
Useless
This idea is ridiculous, it may work on a small thick neck like a pug maybe or a British bulldog,,,, but a lurcher or greyhound FORGET IT!! More hassle than what it's worth,,,,, just buy the original purpose made collar
Im single, 20 YO - I need a real boyfriend
simonton piland Tinder’s not helping?
If it wasnt bad enough that Bitches are already scams themselves, the internet has created a multimillion-dollar Scam Bitch industry. Fucking ridiculous the shit our dicks get us into
Probably a Nigerian scammer pretending to be a chick
