There was a british naval ship called the "HMS Porcupine", and I don't remember the full story, but it was damaged and recycled into two smaller boats, and they named one "HMS Pork" and the other "HMS Pine"

There was a popolazion of the european type in Italy, But It when locally extint during the Ice Age.
    Fast forward to ancient Rome.
They started trading with the rest of the Mediterranean, and if there was something that they reeeally adored it was strange meats.
Once they discovered porcupines in nord Africa, they liked them for they sweet taste.
So the romans started to breed them in Italy, where some escaped and started to fill again the niche that the european version left ages ago !!!

    The second-cutest ouch-potato 🦔 I'd love to see a video on hedgehogs!
Fun fact: baby hedgehogs (hoglets) loose their baby quills in the same way humans loose their baby teeth. They're born with softer spikes that gradually fall out as hog is growing and coming back well spikey. It's called quilling and makes them really grumpy - just like babies teething.
I'm parent to a pygmy hog and live in the UK where we're so inconsiderate we've pushed wild ones to extinction 😔

Cree and Ojibwa looked at the porcupine as a gift from the heavens. Easy to catch and delicious to eat.

Since new world and old world porcupines arent closely related both lineages developed quills independently as convergent evolution?

5:28 Yeah, that's why in Portugal we call them "porco-espinho" which literally means "pig-thorn".

Yes, of course "I was wondering" about mating. Figured the answer was what it ended up being, but I hoped it would be something more interesting.
Porcupets is a suitably adorable name.
Gotta show my appreciation for Danielle's awesome hair. Such effort, much appreciation.

I remember someone telling me how to get those quills out: You don t pull them straight out - you twist them, while gently pulling. Mind, it's still quite painful - but better than just pulling.

It figures it'd be felines and mustelids that would figure out how to eat them safely.
Bears and crocs walking around with quills in their faces and cats and fishers be like, "pssh. Amateurs." 😆

I feel like this video was kinda short, haha. I'm glad you covered the porcupine, but I wish I learned a little more about them, haha. Like so far the comments told me that they camouflage, how they sound, and I feel like we kinda skipped old world ones. Either way, I love your videos and obviously you can't get to everything!
