Hello adhavan I don't think it mandatory, we need to keep the inside wall cooler so the voids in the rat trap acts as a cushion holding the outside heat to transfer inside, leaving a exposed whole can bring water dust and other unwanted things inside which can weaken the wall We need ventilation in case of wood to prevent from moisture, with proper Measures
Hello isaly, Unfortunately we can't use this same brick arrangement shown here in earthquake but, yes by making some modifications in courses we can still use it
Thank you for sharing! I have never seen this bond type. I would like to know if the cavities between bricks collect water and freeze in cold climate, and make cracks bricks.
If the precipitation is too high and temperature is too low, it will be recommended to plaster the wall with suitable material, the insulation created by the cavity inside will remain intact, The beauty of this bond is that in the thickness of 9" only you get a cavity, and due the vertical placement of bricks less number of bricks are used It was invented by LAURI BAKER and India architect from the southern part of KERLA, INDIA

By default we get cavity inside the rat trap bond wall if you look in the video at time : 1:07 i have shown the interior of the wall in which we get cavity from top to bottom, we can use those for putting various services inside.
@@skillingarchitects vertical line is clear, what about the horizontal.. do we have to cut the brick or any other way? I have planned to built a house through costford thats why ia m asking.
Obviously for larger spans English bond walls are more successful, but small spans and create cavity walls in 9" thickness rat trap bond is the best, bearing capacity is lower than English bond, but it can be improved by providing reinforcement in between the rat trap bond.
We can use the cavity ofcouse to do electrical conduits and wiring But for higher thickness plumbing pipes we need to go outside or use ducts for the same
i lived in a home that used that bond-work, on the outside walls. No plumbing went into any brick wall, not even at a 90. Origional electrical work did, and you could see the builder used metal conduit to run the wires. Any later added wiring, also used metal conduit, and ran on the inside of the wall, with a special nail to nail things into the mortar. the dwv (drain waste vent) pipe, ran thru the concrete part of the foundatiion. The brickwork, went below ground, but only by a few feet. The entire house was encased in a brick planter, with fabric cloth every foot. inside the planter, was white crushed marble, not dirt. But we had to take the oak leaves off the top every year. The bricks had weep holes, which allowed actually termites to come into the home. But, there was no wood for them to eat. There were weep holes at the top, and bottom. There was a roof overhang of 2 feet, meaning, anything live in the planter, had to be watered by you to live. The house, had an addition, that was a slab foundation. Shockingly, the slab foundation leaked water into the house, not any part of the brickwork.
I see.. if this bond is used for non load bearing walls - I.e. Pillar structure, then any problem? secondly regarding electric fittings, can someone do drilling work on rat trap construction walls?
For low cost housing in 9in thickness we can get a cavity wall and which much cheaper than the cavity wall having two walls and takes more thickness wiring can be done from outside
@@TarunKumar-jv4pi if you watch video again in 3d model i have shown the cavity inside. we get cavity of 4.5 inch which runs from top to bottom of wall, so we can provide services there
The idea behind the rat trap is to keep it hollow from inside, which acts as cavity wall and also saves volume of brickwork needed in comparison with the solid brick wall in same thickness.
Due to cavity inside it acts as good thermal Insulater wall, so definitely there will be a temperature difference inside outside it can vary from 3 to 5 degree
My house built through the same procedure. The temperature is drastically low in every conditions. Just one think to ask could I hang a 50" LED (12kg approx) into the wall?? Thanks in advance.
Hello Amit, About your query, it depends are all the walls in your house are rat trap, and for what purpose they are, are they made as a load bearing walls, because in load bearing rat trap bond wall mortar ratio is different fro non-load bearing walls. If yours is a load bearing wall, which means all the load of slabs and other part of the structure is coming on the wall, than yes you can easily hang your LED light. And if its non load bearing than it will be difficult to hang it directly, you need some extra support, like you can create small beam of concrete by creating a niche in the wall and cast the frame or a stand in which you can hang the light. Beam will rest on the masonry only, its same way as we provide a lintel beam just above the door level. And for your reference weight of 50 inch LED TV is also around 12kg
Nice information 🎉🎉🎉

Would a rat trap wall be strong enough to hold a concrete ring beam in order to build a Boveda ceiling ?
to tell that accurately calculations are required, as lot of parameters will play the role into it

Sir please share the morter ratio. If we feel the trap with sand then room temperature will reduce or increase.
Mortar ratio can start from 1:3 to 1:5 depending on the load on the wall.
The room temperature will increase because of sand
