Gabby Garnett is telling it as it happened! My grandfather was at that game and sat behind the cubs dugout with his father. He swore til the day he died at 93 that Ruth yelled “that’s only 2 strikes! An interesting irony about Babe Ruth's "called shot" was that Charlie Root, who served up Ruth's HR (and another to Lou Gehrig on the next pitch), was also the pitcher against whom the famous "Mack Attack" in Game 4 of the 1929 World Series began and was mostly against. In the bottom of the seventh inning of that game, Root had an 8-0 lead, and seemingly was about to help the Cubs even that World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics, but the A's rallied for 10 runs in the seventh inning, seven of which were against Root, to take a 3-1 lead in that series, which they won in the next game.
But Root did get some minor payback on the Yankees when he was the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Braves 25 years later, in 1957, as the Braves, led by Lew Burdette's three wins, two of which were shutouts, beat the Yankees in seven games in the Silver Anniversary of the "Called Shot".
And then the Braves blew a 3-1 lead the next year

Gabby Garnett is telling it as it happened! My grandfather was at that game and sat behind the cubs dugout with his father. He swore til the day he died at 93 that Ruth yelled “that’s only 2 strikes! I still have one more!” And then hit the home run. He never called the shot. I told that story at his funeral as part of his eulogy. I only wish I would have recorded my gramps telling the story as a first hand account. I’ve told my kids and now grandkids the truth of the “called shot” that never was called.

Jenkinson researched for 28 years every single question you could ask about Ruth and yes, comparing him to players of color etc. By the way, you are wrong. Babe played against the best of the old Negro League players dozens of times and his batting average was higher and he hit more home runs per at bat than he did playing in the majors. Ruth played against the Negro league's when he would barnstorm directly after the season was over. In 1938, when Ruth was retired and 43 years old, he hit a home run to dead center field against the great Satchel Paige. Satchel scratched his head and could not say a word. Now, as for not playing against blacks in the majors, READ THE BOOK. All of the stats are in there. Baseball is different than basketball and football. The only one Babe had to be concerned about was the pitcher. Since blacks came in to the major leagues, their have been some very good pitchers, though statistically they have not been as good as pitchers of non-color. This is not opinion, it is fact. Bob Gibson would be an exception, as would reliever, Mariano Rivera. With the exception of Bob Gibson, the best pitchers of color were from Cuba and Babe did very well against them hitting dozens of homers over 500 feet. You need to perform your due diligence and read Jenkinsons book. He took 28 years researching. Get the point now?

Charlie Root was asked about the called shot and said something to the effect of "Had he done that to me (called his shot) I would have knocked him on his ass with the next pitch." I kind of have to agree with Root saying he didn't as no pitcher is going to let themselves be shown up like that even by a then already living legend like Ruth. Also I read a story where Ruth and Root met up sometime shortly before Babe's death and Root mentioned it saying "You never called that shot." Ruth smiled and replied to the effect of "Oh I know I didn't but it made for a helluva story though didn't it?" Both men had a good laugh at that.

I read that Babe admitted that he didn't call the home run shot. This was at the time he was a coach for the Dodgers, and getting a massage. I believe it was in 1937.
Can you imagine if he played under today’s rules? He’d pitch every four games and bat instead if a DH. He’d then win twenty or more times a year, and DH the other three games. Hit 80 home runs a season and bat .330 with 170 rbi.
