- Last September, in 2023, I had the opportunity to fish aboard the Tony Reyes for my second time ever!
The "Tony Reyes Fishing Tours" are a mothership operation that launches out of San Felipe, Mexico and focuses on fishing the Midriff Islands in the Sea of Cortez for an abundance of exotic species!
The main specie we decided to focus on targeting for majority of our trip was Leopard Grouper / Cabrilla!
Cabrilla are a super strong fighting grouper specie that lives in the shallows and really likes reaction lures!
This is true power fishing at its finest. Casting burn baits and covering as much water as possible fan casting at shallow water structure.
Aside from the fishing, the whole operation is such an incredible experience in itself. All hard working and super respectful topside and kitchen crew!
Overall an amazing and unforgettable experience!
Highly recommend booking a trip if you ever get the chance!
This is only the teaser for the full length videos. make sure to keep an eye out for future day by day vlogs of this trip! Dropping very soon!

Awesome
Thank you!
Wow nice one bro🎉 good job
Thanks brotha! much appreciated!
Moments I will never forget.
I have to agree with this 100%! Such an Unforgettable trip!
I got the 8ft 20-40, the 8ft 15-30 and the 8ft PCH custom 20-40 which replaced the SCTi.
All of those are perfect rods for cabrilla fishing! I think my buddy Joe fishing the M1 inshore 15-35
@@Dirty.Hookers I’m bringing those three and my tri fibers.
Ray, that was an awesome trip! The fishing and the looked excellent.
Such a fun trip! Highly recommend Tony Reyes to be on every fisherman’s bucket list
Just met your dad, he told me to check out your channel! MoVal loves fish!!

Fantastic video! I can't wait to see the gear breakdown. Thanks for the great content.
I will hopefully be putting together a tackle bag break dow here soon! thank you for this reminder!
What an insane trip! What else could have possibly caught!
Congrats!
SO MUCH MORE! There are Thousands of species of fish that can be targeted and caught in the Sea of Cortez! Even at least 10 that will make features in these full length videos throughout this series, that I did not add in this video.
@@Dirty.Hookers that’s pretty amazing! I’m looking forward to your next videos🤙

Oh man! I'm definitely going on a Tony Reyes trip. Can I book a spot on an open party trip? Also would my Okuma SCTi"s hold up down there? Once again another sick trip Ray!!! Nice job!
Thanks Sean, much appreciated!
Call longfin tackle to find out what availability they have! Most booking goes through Longfin.
And about your SCTi, possibly. Which model did you get?

You have no idea! It is literally a power fishers dream! Thanks brotha, very much appreciated!

Appreciate you brotha! Hope you’re doing well!
Flag cabrilla are one of my favorite fish ever. I catch em on the shore in punta mita, just below puerta Vallarta. 2500 spinning setup and 20lb leader, and man they are literally spotties on cocaine . Using same spottie gear, 3” swimbaits
That sounds so fricken fun! Damn I really have to try that some day! That Is my style of fishing!
Would you recommend taking 9' rod for Cabrilla? I have a trip coming soon.
I’d recommend 7’6” - 8’, 8’6”max.
Just because it’s mostly short distance accurate casting instead of long distance fan casting.
Ray so what rods do you use for that trip almost look like fresh water style rods ?
We are basically using heavy calico bass rods.
I will try to put together a tackle talk soon, breaking down all of the gear, lures, and terminal tackle I bring on a trip like this.
What rod and reel are you using for the cabrilla. I can't tell but I want both.
I will be putting together a tackle talk soon going over all the gear and tackle I use.
But the set ups I have been using on these trips are Daiwa Lexa 400TW and HD, paired with Phenix Titan Long Fall 710 ML and MH rods.
Really really great jerk bait rods believe it or not!
Hi Ray say having a 9ft jig stick deckhand style rod made wanted to pic your brain on a dcent reel I was thinkig a shimano trinidad 20
or a tesoro 12s any thoughts would be greayly appricated thanks Ray
My personal favorite reels for casting on jigsticks, are
Daiwa Saltist 35 SD
Daiwa Saltiga 35 SD
Shimano Torium 16 or 20
Shimano Trinidad 16 or 20
Awesome Video , What Rod and reels are you using Ray?

Hi Ray
Wanted to know your thoughts on the Diawa Lexa 400 winn for throwing surface irons for yellowtail I have the reel and used it only once but would like to get more use , not a great caster with a conventional reel but practicing .
The Lexa I can cast pretty good with but worried about the line capacity ? Any thoughts would be great look like your season started off pretty good
I actually started off with a lexa 400 HD as my first surface iron reel.
I had it spooled up filled with 50lb braid, and would do a +10ft 40lb mono leader.
I had an 8’6” rod but maybe would even do a 9ft if it felt right. And I have my mono go from about 6”-8” of the line guide, up each guides of the rod, and snip about 10” from where I would usually have my jig hanging on a cast.
The reason for that, it’ll give me a few chances to cut and retie before needing a whole new leader.
Another option I did, was about half filled with 50lb braid, and about a 60-80yd top shot of 40 mono. Same reason for both, to keep the connection knot from going in and out of my line guide
However I will say, As I’ve grown to fish surface irons as much as I do, I will say a narrow open face conventional reel is a lot more efficient than a bait caster.
A lexa 400 will put you in the right direction and help you understand how to cast big reels
Ray thank you so much for answering my comment I am gonna take your advise and keep practicing with a conventional reel , what do you think about the Okuma Tesoro reels any thoughts ? I thought about doing a Tesoro 12 on a new deck hand rod I am having made
Hey ray I’m the kid from the pcs show I was wondering what 100lb braid you would use for night fishing for bluefin. I got a pen squall 30 for night bluefin
When it comes to brain, everyone has their own personal preference.
Some people like hollow core, some like very thick and wirey, and some like silky smooth, or extra thin.
I can’t remember what brand I got for for my 100# set up, but I will say, you should go to your local tackle shop and see what feels best to you!
With the night time bluefin jigging, it puts a lot of pressure with thick line against your thumb, so it’s super important you’re using something that’s comfortable for you
@@Dirty.Hookers Thank you so much ray I appreciate your help I really couldn’t decide but now I will and I hope I will catch a tuna on my 2.5 day coming up. Much Love Ray🙏🏾
@@carp_smokin_a_blunt really appreciate your continued support man!
Hope you get on them on your 2.5 day!
What dates are you fishing and what boat?
@@Dirty.Hookers Im pretty sure but not 100% that we are leaving out of H&M landing but I think we are leaving June 2nd.
@@carp_smokin_a_blunt nice man! Just a few more weeks away. Hope you guys get on them! Bluefin is really starting to pick up now!
Need to get on one of those trip! What is the cost?
Was thinking the same thing.
Definitely a well worth trip! Runs between $1,300 - $1,800 depending on Time of year and How many passengers are on the trip.
That's awesome How do I contact Tony Reyes fishing tours ?
You can either contact them through the info on their website, or through Longfin Tackle if you call and ask their availability
