As a student in Stoke I used to commute from Longport the following winter to this… other journeys too and more commuting to Manchester so I spent quite a lot of time in the station. It always seemed to have quite a lot of staff, and the BR uniforms were pretty eclectic compared with the post privatisation corporate wear. I bought a little book of loco numbers from the little newsagent kiosk… used to buy papers there too. I liked the Nestles chocolate vending machine on the platform too. Loved the class 304’s with the springy seats, warmed in winter… not so much the Sprinters. Sometimes there’d be loco hauled local services - declassified 1st class compartment stock - luxury. Can’t remember what the locos would have been though. All seems a long time ago now - happy memories.
Fascinating video! Although the rolling stock is remembered, it is the smaller details that are forgotten. The Royal Mail being loaded on to trains, the BRUTEs, the old station clocks, HSTs coming through Stoke and the guard's van with its stove obviously in use!
Absolutely fantastic video! My home station. I was 5 years old at the time. Many happy times spent at Stoke Station trainspotting with my dad. Thanks for the super footage 👍
Takes me back I would of been 14 at that time can’t beat the British rail days I remember sometime in the late 80s or early 90s I was standing on the platform at Stoke station and a class 37 freight was coming through on middle line and we felt the platforms move lol great times
graet video of stoke from 30 years ago i rember that center track why did thay ever remove that was good for letting though trains though the staion now stoke can be come a bottle neak as all trains only have one track each way though the staion and thats the platform one a bit silly really to ever remove the though train should put one back to ease the bottle neak at stoke.
Barely got used, so was removed, I also seem to remember platform 1 being extended and a higher speed through the platform being one of the benefits (sure it's something like 45mph as opposed to 20mph previously), not to mention the two sets of points recovered, 4 point machines, the overhead line being simplified and the track maintenance no longer required, both through platforms are also bi-di so losing the centre road hasn't got many, if any downside
Just loving these great videos. Fond memories of the good old days 👍
You are very welcome and many thanks for watching and for the comment...my best regards...Mark
