ANYONE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING THIS PLEASE READ MY COMMENT...THIS IS NOT BEEN SOLICITATED OR PAID FOR POSTING...IT IS A TRUE EXPERIENCE! Once again another great video, thanks Dave! Been a pro member going on my 3rd year and I just recently went back through the "camera setup" because I found that I was struggling for some reason when I was under pressure for those "quick the lights good" situations and have actually been just picking my camera up (leaving it out in different places around the house) and creating a quick image doing it with the step by step method 3-6 times a day (working from home so during breaks etc) focusing strictly on camera set up...went out last weekend (only time I can get out to remote areas) and noticed a significant difference in my creative process...a little less stressful allowing my mind to be open to what I was seeing...however even with this "practice" was still "thinking" so I have continued throughout this week and at home it seems to be starting to come in "auto mode" in my hand...will see this weekend when I get out again...then will continue and review composition step by step to improve that area...because of course we can always use improvement in that area! I realized when reviewing from the beginning that in the beginning I rushed thru the process because I was excited to "learn it all as quick as possible" I have learned it is a process and your videos, course and pdfs has been the best out there (yes in the beginning I checked out a few other courses-and I have to say there is no one providing what you provide) and whether you realize it or not your techniques in setup, composition, and post can be applied to all genre not just wilderness/landscape for I do take my camera everywhere so I dabble with street, architecture, zoo, etc as well, F Stop, focal length and focus point may be different but everything still applies...set up, composition, light all matter...even the set up practice I've been doing of my house plants require all the same questions as getting the sunset on the lake...is the camera ready and am I creating something that tells the viewer what I see and feel! Thank you Dave and yes signing up again this year...don't want to miss anything you are adding...can't believe how much you've added over this last year and looking for all the new additions coming in the future...

Great techniques. Back focus bottom set up was such a relief for me. I used to switch always from auto to manual on camera button to avoid autofus when i didn't need it. 🙌 And yessss, having the check list always helps when you need to build up image and time is running and light is about to go down 😅🌿 it's like do I need shoot sky fist or foreground, do i need to do sky exposure bracketing or focus staking for the foreground.. and sun it almost gone 😥😥😬😬😅😅

Thanks. I always like to shoot the most rapidly changing / or likely to disappear part of the scene first. That's an easy rule of thumb you can apply to any shot.

You explain everything so well and I appreciate the work flow advice. I also appreciate you are really out there, for days. Balancing photography goals and backpacking/hiking with gear and food isn't always easy. I really need to look at all of your links/tutorials in depth. We have a 9 day sled pulling expedition to Svalbard March 2023 and I want everything dialed in. Thanks for all of your info.

Thanx, Dave. I expended my 10-day school trial. Wow, I felt I was cramming for college finals with all the access you offered! Except, lol, this was a lot more enjoyable than finals cramming. You really are amazingly generous with all the material available in the trial. I am getting ready to join at your premium level. Anyway, I do have one question: what settings or procedures do you use for best results when you are shooting snow-covered landscapes? I'm hoping for one more snowstorm this season to shoot out in the field. Thanx.

Hey Roy. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. That would be a huge amount of material to cover in 10 days:) It would be great to have you on board.
I also add new videos every few weeks, including what's already there.
Here is a snow shoot: ruclips.net/video/vQDhOWcy6f0/видео.html That's the exact technique. Here is another helpful video too --> ruclips.net/video/zGvhWeSiXeA/видео.html
Good luck. Headed out to shoot the coast this week.

I felt this was one of your better posts, in two different ways. First your "all your buttons at your right hand" was a huge eye opener for me. I REALLY need to constantly change the ISO (auto ISO doesn't cut it for me) setting due to the environment I often shoot in. And I rarely use video, so replacing the record button with an ISO button was a revelation. Second I totally agree that structure can (and often does) allow for more creativity by reducing the mundane. Thanks Dave, much appreciated.

    Hello Dave,
I always enjoy watching your video.
Do you ever run into wild life, like bear in woods or a snake in deserts?
Do you carry things like bear spray or snake antivenom?

I've been a member of your landscape photography school since inception, and I didn't remember how much of these ideas have become ingrained in my workflow until I watched this video. I recall getting the buttons on my Canon R mirrorless optimized and my settings workflow all written out when I first watched your videos on this subject. A big challenge that I've problem-solved is shooting in extreme cold. I can access most of my buttons with large overmitts on, and I've been creative with using an old Kindle stylus attached to a cable-release to press buttons and navigate the touch screen. How do you deal with very cold/windy conditions?

Is mirror up really necessary for landscape photos using a tripod and shutter release? Does mirror up automatically happen in live view on a Canon 77D or would I need to enable it?

Totally live by these principles Dave as a 30 year veteran firefighter, drill the basics to save time and to know you gear. Absolutely agree with your comments about creativity not being affected by being prescriptive. If you don't have your camera settings correct, take too long to get set up or if you miss a step in the set up, doesn't matter how creative you are, the chances are you will miss the best opportunity to get the image.

Great video...good to review and reorient my shooting techniques. Why don' you use a medium frame camera? (required question, Dave). Ever think of visiting French Alps?

    • @MikeStaubes
      @MikeStaubes 2 года назад

      Dave Morrow Dave,
I am a member of a photo club in France. Each month there is a photo contest and it is really a popularity contest with photos included. Usually the same 6 to 8 people win.
I also look at the EXIF data and vote for the people who DO NOT win the contest very often.
I use a MacPro (MacBook Pro, OS Monterey) and want to modify the EXIF sidecar. I only want a title of the photo and comments, no Geo tagging, no histogram, no camera info. I will make a copy with a good sidecar and keep that photo on my external drive. I will submit the edited sidecar photo to the contest location.
I suspect you run into some of the photo community trying to discover your location and camera settings.
Can you recommend any editor or preset in Lightroom CC to use?
      Thanks in advance?
