Sound like you had the same instructor I had. Working on a lathe, especially cleaning is done with bare hands, like you say, the feel or touch tells a lot that a gloved hand even with nitrile gloves cannot.

This is a series that will be following closely as I have just started doing this to my Smithy AT300. Good luck and stay healthy

Thanks Mr. Appleton, this is fun to watch. I’ve found it to be pretty well impossible to bring any used machine into my shop without giving it a really good cleaning first.

0:54 ro be exact it is 95% or thereabouts ethanol (regular alcohol, beer, wine etc) with 5% methanol (hence “methylated”) and a touch of colouring agent. The “methylated” is just to stop people from drinking it. Not really dangerous, it is just alcohol.

Initially I bought this one litre of Meths to make some Antivirus Pandemic Hand Wash ......

Really need to correct Garratt Fan about methanol, it is very dangerous. Mixed with ethanol like this it is less dangerous but it can still make you blind. Pure methanol will kill you, it is extremely poisonous.

I prefer to use isopropanol for this sort of cleaning operation, it does not evaporate as quickly and I find it to be a better solvent for some of the heavier oils. It is about the same price as long as you avoid the rip-off merchants. I wonder how it would behave in a spirit burner.

Hi Keith. If you look around the lathe bed you will find a number stamped on it. If you go to the Myford website you'll be able to find out when it was made.

Did you figure out the mystery spring loaded pin? Is it the thing that keeps the drive belt cover up when changing speeds?

At first, I thought this Myford lathe looked a lot like the 3 Atlas lathes I have owned in the past. However, after watching you work on it, I can see that, although they look similar, the Myford is much better quality.Did you get the set of change gears with it. I assume it is imperial.

Hi, I wonder if you used, brake and clutch cleaning aerosol spray and/or gunk would worked better and less time consuming? or would they damage the paint?
Also with really thick oil and grease built up with all sorts of dust and kind of became a part of a machine so to speak, I usually use an oven cleaning spray and then Fairy power spray.
Great videos very informative and interesting.

Brake and Clutch spray seems to be a bit lethal, so I avoid it. I have used Fairy Power spray, it's good but I haven't seen any on the Supermarket shelves for a while.
