Honestly, Toyota should have just stuck with the 2jz design and ramped up production, then released the new supra with it boosted from stock and with a 6spd manual.
It would have been so much more popular than the BMW drive-train and cost them $0 in R&D.
It's not that the BMW drive train is bad or anything, it's just not what supra enthusiasts want.
It's a classic case of "if it's not broke, don't fix it".

rsjshshsj addd actually these motors aren’t very common swaps. It’s not the engine you think because you didn’t pay attention. Look at the specifications at the beginning. It’s a 2jz GTE, not a real vvti or non vvti.

To all the people talking shit about the b58 in the new supra. Someone ran an 11.3 with just a tune and downpipe. That's impressive as hell. Easily going to be a 10 second car with bolt ons and tires.
Good for the engine and easy to tune. But still, BMW takes all the credit from Toyota for making this car. Sorry, but B58 engine is still from BMW and Toyota didn't get any better credits.

While I agree the A80 Supra probably helped make the 2JZ-GTE more well known (in the US/outside of Japan) I'd actually argue that had the A80 Supra only been offered naturally aspirated with the 2JZ-GE and the IS300, GS300, or SC300 getting the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE then they would probably be the cars that people hype up to god status like the A80 Supra is currently along side the 2JZ-GTE. Also at least in Japan the 2JZ-GTE also came in the 1st and 2nd gen Toyota Aristo (GS300) which is probably where a majority of the imported/swapped 2JZ-GTE come out of. Really the Aristo should be given majority of the credit for the 2JZ-GTE and not the Supra, but that's just my opinion lol.

It's nice to see a new Supra true to it's name with a 2JZ and everything.
But sometimes I almost feel like Toyota and Bmw is getting a bad rap for being involved in this car.
But Imagine if Toyota would have gone through with making the new Supra a hybrid!? It would basically be a sportier version of the Prius! So I am glad that the new Supra still has a straight six, even if it comes from Bmw. And the straight sixes from Bmw are very good engines when it comes to tuning.
Toyota should offer this bodykit as stock otherwhise it ismt worth to buy it

BMW and all the other Germans dropped the ball on reliability a long time ago. Toyota and it's sister Lexus are lonely at the top of reliability. I really think this car will hurt their image if it comes with BMW reliability..

HKS swapped to 2jz because the engine itself has so many tuning options and they know their own stuff, also much easier to deal with
B58 on the other hand, is relatively new, which means less tuning option and knowledge behind it, for now

The new supra is an epic FAIL
Short base chassis: not good for high acceleration in aggressive boost.
Small designe: smaller than a 370Z and narrower than a GT86.
Fake vents: leads to nothing especially the door’s. Every car has fake vents that can be worked out by tuning companies (not a feature in the Supra).
complicated engine: expensive to repair, and unreliable.
Auto transmission: unfunny, underpowered and unreliable.

This is the reason why we should swap from BMW engine to 2JZ-GTE!!
