There's one thing to bear in mind when looking at a diesel vauxhall from insignia age or newer. Some of the engines have sensored glow plugs and if they go they're circa £200 EACH for the part, plus fitting if it goes to the garage plus VAT.
I've got a Vauxhall insignia 2.0CDti Auto SRi estate. Bought it with 40k miles on it in 2013, it's done over 140k now and it's still a great car. Does around 57-60mpg on the motorway, about 40mpg on shorter journeys. I'd say watch out for the oil pump seal as that's a common issue although not a big job to change it. Other than that I can't fault the car. You can buy them for under £2000 for a 2010 model. Some may disagree but for what you can pick them up for these days I think they are a really good car. Even a 2015 model is under £5000.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Mercs how they used to be. Buy that, drench it with Waxoyl everywhere underneath, and you've got a good car for another 10 years there.....
That W124 Merc looks amazing, proper old school build quality….👍. Mazda a good buy if the oil pickup has been addressed, should have been as it was a recall I think…
And right now, BMW seem to think they're on a par with energy supply companies, because they want you to pay through the nose monthly to keep your ar$e warm on a heated seat.....
The BMW right at the beginning was probably the pick of the bunch for me but the Mundano at the end was quite interesting too. Were the wheels & tyres on it standard I wonder? It looked like they didn't really fill out the wheel arches................maybe that was the style back in the day.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I can see the attraction of the Merc but, given its age, I would be concerned about tin worm. Corrosion protection was pretty sketchy in vehicles that old. If it isn't rotten it will make a very retro-stylish set of wheels 🚗🚗🚗
I’m thinking about getting an cheap cheap estate car for under 3k for taking dog out at weekends few times a month so won’t be driven much at all (got a Leon for other driving) if I want something that I don’t give a shit how it drives or looks but don’t want it to cost me lots in repairs would it be best to look at Hyundai & Toyotas ?
Have been thinking the same as current lease is up soon and want to go back to ownership but get something nearing modern classic. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop when looking online hahaha. Some great and insightful info 🤣
6.10 😂🤣😆… nice try Jim… Mr Damon’s twin? 😉. 7.40 is a better likeness… except the yellow makes you look like one of the Simpsons 😁 Another helpful video… I often see a car I’d like to go for in your vids… would have been the Skodas in this one. I liked the look of the 3 litre Ford, and agree that it would be an investment, assuming it didn’t get written off like my last Ford did 😩.
I'm wanting to get an estate to take my dog places and every day use. I'm thinking of Skoda but love the Volvo estates. Does anyone have any others they'd recommend? Especially for ferrying a dog in the back. Good value to run would be one of the main things I'm wanting. The first BMW estate looked very, I must look into them to see if they're worth getting.
Brilliant video just subscribed I’m going to be looking for a car for my job going to boot sales driving from Lancashire to Yorkshire a lot in the week. I’m looking for something with good boot space and comfortable drive I’m thinking a focus… £3k/£4K budget… keep the videos coming and thanks again for the help
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru perfect seem to be cheap to run and not a bad looker 👍🏻 if you ever wanted to do a special where you pick a car for someone let me know I’m buying in January haha 😆 happy for you to pick one out 👍🏻 thanks again for the reply have a brilliant evening.
I wouldn’t be brave enough - what if I chose you a lemon! Would be good to find the right make/model for you but anything more than could be disastrous 😂
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Ford Powershift, a.k.a. Powersh*t. Avoid at all costs. lousy reputation.... The 1.0 litre Ecoboost is surprisingly peppy, but fuel economy isn't as good as Ford would have you believe...... Beware timing belt replacement on the 1.0 litre Ecoboost, as it's a 15 hour job.
You'd have to go a long way to better a well serviced Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0Tdi, if you can find a nice one for £5k...... You do have to watch out for odd ones with Starship Enterprise mileage though..... The CVT gearboxes in Audis are usually avoided by many Jim, as they don't have the best reputation. Audi only used a CVT for a short while, because they were not well received by buyers...... The Volvo V50 looks a good bet for £5k, although this one has the slightly thirsty 2.4 engine. Nice car though. Just put your National Trust sticker in the back window, get some driving gloves, and you've got it made..... Avensis is another good 'un. Boringly reliable. Looks great on your drive if you live in a bungalow with hanging baskets outside... The Dacia is a cheapie, and might do someone who just wants to transport a dog around. Beware these things aren't galvanised during manufacture, and will (and do) rust prematurely.......Dacias even out-do Ford for their Flit Gun paint job..

I had a couple as hire cars over the years and loved them to be fair
Always check out the MOT history they can tell you a lot!
Yes Ian, I did a video on that, it’s a brilliant tool.
Great video! That old merc estate has GOT to be a future classic!
It’s a sexy beast

Mazda 6 petrol is fine. The diesel had the oil pick-up issue.....
Had an E91 BMW 318i like the one at the start ,dog slow but had the coldest A/C ever and the hottest heated seats….👍

@John Roberts @DefinitelyNotAGuru The Mondeo is still for sale but at the higher price of £5790
Old video I know but that mondeo st is still for sale and at an inflated price, the dealer says no offers!
Really!? Wow!!!!
I love your video . Need best to buy suv 2010 to 2019
Try to get something Honda or Toyota if you want reliability 👍

The two brands you mention seem like a decent place to start

Yes the DSG's are much better but the Audi CVT's were decent as far as CVT's go.
Any of these ULEZ compliant?
Yes, on the main screen on Auto Trader you’ll see it says ULEZ with a tick next to it - you can definitely see it on the Octavia from memory
